Here’s another story of customer service incompetence for you.

I went to Office Max Wednesday to check out a new hard drive. They had the Western Digital 80 GB 7200 RPM w/ 8MB cache for $109 minus rebates for a final price of $60. Unfortunately (and not surprisingly), they were currently out of stock. The helpful woman in customer service (no sarcasm here, seriously) explained to me that I could order it online, and if I did before 4 pm the following day, the new drive would be delivered on Friday. Also, since the drive was over $50, the shipping would be free. Gotta like that!

So I ordered the drive Wednesday evening. Yesterday afternoon, I checked online to see the status of my order. Interestingly enough, the order status was “not yet shipped”, yet the delivery date still showed May 9th. So I called customer service and spoke to this guy who was not very bright. He informed me that the item had been picked up by FedEx on Thursday and should be delivered before 7 pm. I asked him if this was the case, why did it still say “not yet shipped” and how come there was no tracking number. He had no clue, but said it still should be delivered.

Joe had gotten home early and said there were no stickers on the door (which FedEx and UPS typically leave if they end up leaving our package(s) with the management office). So don’t ask what possessed me to call our management office when I pulled into the parking lot, but it’s a good thing that I did. They informed me that there was indeed a package delivered by FedEx waiting for me. When I went to pick it up, I asked the girl if she remembered what time it was delivered and she said late morning. Well isn’t that interesting. Apparently my package had been delivered several hours prior to my conversation with customer service. Good thing they have an accurate tracking system there. I swear.
