Today has been a very stressful day: Joe’s dad went into the hospital for an angioplasty and they realized that he needs open-heart surgery right away. Because he was on blood thinners, they couldn’t do the procedure today, so they scheduled it for Monday. However, it turns out they put him on some medication to counteract the blood thinners and he’s going to have a triple bypass tomorrow morning.

We were at our wits end earlier, trying to figure out if we should fly out there (they live in Arizona), but there seems to be no flights out of Chicago until tomorrow evening, and by then he will be out of surgery. Being an analytical person, I looked up the mortality rates for this procedure, and the statistics are encouraging. It’s certainly put our minds at ease somewhat. Plus the doctor assured Joe’s mom and sister that this is pretty routine.

We’re still worried, of course, but I am sure he will be fine. I’d say we’re praying, but we’re not religious, so that seems rather hypocritical, but you get the gist of it.

Please send good thoughts our way.

UPDATE 3/12/05: The procedure was successful and Joe’s dad is now resting.
