Sox vs. Astros

I’m wondering just how long we have to live in Chicago before we stop being so naive and realize it always takes twice as long to get somewhere than it should thanks to traffic. There are just too many damn people in this city! We were late to the Sox game today. Not by a lot, but enough. Not only that, but the regular parking was full (or more like closed since it didn’t look full once we got into the park and looked down to see plenty of open spots) so we had to park several blocks away in a privately owned lot and pay a little more too. Joe was pissed!

Once we settled into our seats, however, our moods improved. Even though we were in the 500 level, we had a nice line of sight and no one occupied the seats directly in front of or behind us. So that was nice. The only thing that sucked was we were in the sun most of the game and it was hot!

Take me out to the ball game

After a couple of innings we got some food, but because we weren’t allowed on the main concourse, I couldn’t try the Mexican food like I wanted, so I got a cheddarwurst instead. It was really juicy and had a great flavor, so I was happy. Joe got a polish dog and a beer. I almost got a margarita, but at $6.75 a piece, I wasn’t sure I wanted to chance it (I’ve never had one before) in case I hated it.

We ended up leaving at the top of the 8th inning because the game was boring and the Sox were losing. We listed to the game on XM on the drive home and for a little while we thought they just might win, but nope. Final score was 3-2 Astros.

They are really sucking this season so far. Nothing disappoints me more than going to a game where my team loses. To be perfectly honest, the whole event is such an ordeal that I doubt we’ll be buying tickets to any games in the near future. I prefer watching them on tv in the comfort of my own home. Jesus, I’m getting old.

Memorial Day

I had to say something about the chirping birds in my last entry, didn’t I? They would not shut up this morning. For whatever reason they were more obnoxious than usual.

I just ate the most delicious dinner. We grilled two t-bones and made two huge baked potatoes to go along with them. The steak came out very tender and flavorful; didn’t even need the A-1. I think we get better at grilling every year.

Earlier Joe dyed my hair… twice. The first time there were a few spots that didn’t take. We went to Sally Beauty Supply to pick up more hair-dye and got some tips on how to re-do it from the helpful staff. I should shop there more often – they have good products, reasonable prices, and great service. After Joe did the touch-ups, the coloring is much more uniform. Overall it turned out a bit darker than I was expecting, but it looks good, so I’m happy.

Didn’t do much else today except clean and do laundry. We got up a little later than usual and did some grocery shopping, then spent a good part of the afternoon dealing with my hair.

Yesterday we brought a bucket of chicken and corn-on-the-cob to my parents’ house for a pre-Memorial Day celebration. I’m guessing that no one is going to want to play Pictionary with us anymore since we kicked butt at it, as always. It was fun, even if Joe spent hours trying to figure out why they are having so many problems with their DSL connection. I’m so frustrated with it that I think they should switch to cable and be done with it. We never have issues with our cable internet connection.

I’m sad that we’ve reached the end of our three-day weekend. I could get used to staying home and never working again. Who wouldn’t, right? At least we’ve got another extended weekend coming up since we took Friday off to take the kids to Indiana Beach. I think I can handle working only three days this week.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday!

Bowling

We took the kids bowling this morning thanks to the coupon I found for 2 hours of bowling (including shoe rental) and a free pitcher of pop for $19.99. We’ve been wanting to go bowling for awhile but it can quickly become very expensive, so the coupon was a nice incentive to finally go.

Brunswick Zone

We went to our neighborhood Brunswick as soon as they opened and they were already pretty busy (although you can’t tell from the picture above because by the time I took it the leagues were gone). We got the last lane and there were a bunch of empty ones between us and the leagues which was perfect since I’m not the best bowler and didn’t want to look like an ass in front of anyone but my family. The kids actually beat me the first game, although they had the benefit of bumpers. It’s pretty cool how you can choose that per player. The old bowling alley in the town where I grew up had these big foam bumpers they laid down in the gutters so everyone had to use them.

Bowling ball

I only bowled two games because I seemed to be getting worse instead of better and my hand was hurting from trying to keep my fingers from slipping out of the ball. I even dropped it once which was embarrassing. I still had fun, though. I haven’t bowled in years and it’s nice doing something different.

We’ve never been to this place before and in addition to bowling they have pool tables, a huge arcade, bumper cars and some other ride, and laser tag. The laser tag prices are insane, though. It’s $6.99 per person for 15 minutes! I’d be lying if I didn’t say I want to do it, however. Maybe one of these days.

They're looking at me!

After we played some games we went to a place called Augustinos for lunch. We drive past both locations all the time but have never been inside. Their menu is diverse, so everyone found something good to eat. I had the best sandwich ever – oven roasted turkey on a buttery croissant. The sandwich was so huge, I only ate half of it. Everyone enjoyed their food so I’m sure we’ll be back again sometime soon.

In all, a nice morning and afternoon. We got a movie from Blockbuster and will be watching it later. It’s called Happily N’Ever After. Never heard of it before, but it looked cute and it has a lot of familiar actors doing the voices, so hopefully it will be as good as Hoodwinked was.

— Update: Don’t bother. The movie sucked. I started doing laundry, I was so bored.

Movie weekend

The kids have been talking lately about their grandmother buying them both a Nintendo DS so they can get the new Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Don’t get me started on how she shouldn’t be spending that kind of money on them, nor even mentioning it to them until she’s ready to really buy it. I’m just thinking if/when they do get them, I am so going to buy this case for The Boy. He has dropped his GBA more times than I can count. He really needs something indestructible.

We took my car in for an oil change after work today to a newly built Volkswagen dealership closer to home. They asked if we’d be using them for oil changes from now on and we said yes. Then they asked if they could change the license plate cover to advertise their dealership. They said if we agreed, we could bring my car in for a free car wash whenever we wanted, not just during service trips. Well what the hell? I’m advertising for someone one way or the other, so I agreed. At least they asked. The last place just changed them one day, and god knows what service date since I never pay attention. I just know the place where I bought the car wasn’t the place advertised on the plate covers anymore.

We actually rented a movie from Blockbuster tonight (although we haven’t watched it yet). It has been awhile since we’ve rented anything, so imagine my surprise that there wasn’t really anything good recently released unless I wanted drama or horror. Sorry, but for the most part I’m a comedy gal. So I got the dreaded Employee of the Month. Maybe it will be good and I’ll kick myself for taking this long to see it. Hell, at least there’s eye candy, and I don’t mean just Dane. Dax isn’t half bad either.

We’ve got nothing planned this weekend, so it’s a free-for-all. Which is nice since we’ve got stuff scheduled next weekend on for the next month. We’ll probably see Disturbia tomorrow since I have free tickets. Movie weekend it is.

Fun Center

I am pooped! We got home past the kids’ bedtime tonight because we were out in Indiana at the Fun Center with my family. The kids had a blast, of course, which is why we stayed out later than we normally would. I am soooo exhausted though. Winning at miniature golf is tiring! Well, I won if you only count Joe and the kids’ scores. I got two holes in one! Interestingly enough, so did The Boy. In fact, we got them at the same holes. Weird.

Fun Center

After golf it was already getting late, but since this is the last year of operation, (the owners have sold the Fun Center to Walmart), we probably won’t be back again and I wanted to make sure the kids had a good time. So they played games, went on the bumper cars, ate pizza and hot dogs, and got lots of candy with all the tickets they won.

By the time we left, it was already The Boy’s bedtime. They both went to sleep easily since they were so exhausted, and I’m going to go make myself comfortable on the couch now.
