TV Stand

Walmart.com is on my shit-list at the moment, but I got them back (well, sort of, but it’s not like they care).

A couple of weeks ago, we decided our current entertainment center needed replacing. It’s not that it doesn’t function as needed, it’s just that it is too juvenile for us now. It was perfect for our “bachelor pad”, but I’d like something more adult. I searched online and found a tv stand we both liked at Walmart online. According to the product description, it was also available in some Walmart stores. I decided to try and hunt it down since they wanted $43 in shipping and the item was only $108.

I called a local store to see if they had it in stock, but they said they could only search their system if I had the Walmart item #. Of course, the item # was all zeroes on their site. After much frustrated searching, I found their online customer service number. The representative I spoke with said if the item # wasn’t on the site, she couldn’t help me because that is all she has access to. I asked her with all due respect why she was even there then if she couldn’t provide me any additional information other than what was already on the website. I then asked for a manager. She told me she could get a manager but they would tell me the same thing. I told her that someone somewhere has that item # and I want it. I had no idea why it’s not on their site like it should be, but I wasn’t about to call every store in the tri-state area and wait on hold while they manually searched the shelves for the stand. She put me on hold and when she returned she magically had the number.

I called the local store back with the number and the manager couldn’t find ANY stores that had it in stock. Bummer. I emailed the manufacturer to see if they could guide me to a local store that sells it.

In the meantime, my coworker recommended a local furniture store, so I called them up and they had one left in stock in the back. Apparently the reason why it wasn’t in the Walmart stores is that the model has been discontinued. The local store wanted more money ($130), but we decided to get it anyway.

After work we went over there to purchase it and for the hell of it we asked if they do price matching and they do. We showed the cashier the print-out of Walmart.com’s price, and he hesitated before pointing out that with shipping, the item would cost more. Joe pointed out that they offer the item in the stores too, so that argument didn’t really apply, so the guy gave it to us for the lower price. So with tax, it came to only $117. Score! Now Joe has another weekend project to add to his list: putting it together. ;)

Ironically enough, I got an email back from the manufacturer today recommending the local furniture place we went to last night.

Paint Woes

We are having the hardest time picking out a beige color for the walls in our loft, dining room, and the living room wall that has the fireplace. We found a color we thought we liked at Lowes last weekend. The color is called Dust Bunny, and it was in their American Tradition brand. Tuesday evening Joe painted a portion of the loft and I hated it right away. It reminded me too much of a tan Barbie doll. Yuck!

We went to Home Depot Wednesday night and looked at the Behr paints, but making a decision in the store proved too difficult, so we brought a bunch of sample cards home. We took them upstairs and compared them against the door trim, which is white, to see what kind of contrast they would offer. We didn’t want a saturated look, but likewise we didn’t want something so subtle that you have to wonder what color it is.

Laminate

20041128-001_t.jpg Joe installed the laminate wood flooring in our dining room today. He started around noon, took a half hour lunch break around 2 pm, and finished around 7:30 pm. The most time consuming part was cutting the boards to go around the two vents in the floor. It looks really good though. We still have to paint the walls. What you see near the bottom is the previously blue walls. When the former owners painted over the blue, they didn’t bother to pull off the molding first so it’s still there. We’re painting it beige anyway, so no big deal. I’m so happy that another big project is almost complete. Now we need to replace the hideous vertical blinds and ceiling fan (not pictured). In fact, I think we’re going with a chandelier since we don’t use the fan.

Carpet and shopping

I’m like a kid on Christmas morning – I can’t sleep. And why? Because I want to go shopping! Now that the new carpet is in, the ugly blue shades in the living room do not match at all. Oh and by the way, the carpet installers didn’t leave until just after 7 pm last night, making the installation last 10 hours. Yikes! For all that time they spent here, you’d think they would have done a better job. I’m not saying it doesn’t look good, but there are a few things that look a bit sloppy and if you don’t know anything else about me, know this – I am a perfectionist and I expect the same from others. Especially when I’m spending over $1000 to have it done. That being said, I’m sure it is fine and I’m just expecting too much. While I wouldn’t warn people against Home Depot for carpet installation, I will try someone else next time I need some installed. For variety, you know.

So anyway, back to the shopping. Joe doesn’t want to be out all day, so I have to see how many stores I can cram in between now and noon. I’m trying to plan the day according to the times the stores open. We need groceries, so we might take care of that first so we can drop them off at home and head back out in the opposite direction. There’s toys on sale at K-Mart so I want to look for the kids’ Christmas presents before I just say forget it and order it all online. I have to take back my tight shoes. We need ice cream from Target (their brand of ice cream in New York vanilla is delicious, and I’m not even that fond of vanilla). And last but not least, a new Lowes store just opened this weekend not very far from us, so I want to check it out and price their blinds so come January this place will be done.

Now if only that damn alarm would go off already so that Joe would wake up. Uh oh, I just heard him walking around and the alarm hasn’t gone off yet. He’s coming to get me! ;)

Carpeting

There’s a reason why I like going out on weekends – it’s boring being at home all day. We’ve been holed up in our bedroom since 9 am because that’s when the carpet installers arrived. Seven hours later, they’re still here. I knew this would take a few hours, but even I thought they’d be done by now. And I am so bored. There’s only so many things to look at online and there’s really nothing worth watching on cable. I wish they’d be done already so I could enjoy the new carpet smell in peace. Plus I’m really sick of sitting on the bed. :p
