Things I will (not) miss

Now that we’re officially home owners, I feel I can post the little lists I’ve been compiling over the past few weeks. These are in no particular order, just as I thought of them.

Things I will miss about our apartment …

  • Our large bright bathroom
  • Being able to run the hot water in the bathtub for as long as I want since we don’t pay for it
  • The parks/wildlife in the neighborhood
  • Being able to walk to the Dominicks and library
  • The 15 minutes or less commute to and from work
  • Having a good chuck of change left after paying bills every month
  • Having all the stuff I order get dropped off at the rental office so I don’t have to drive to the nearest FedEx or UPS facility

Closing = piece of cake

Closing went well this morning. We had to wait around for the funds to come through the title company, but other than that, it was a breeze. Our mortgage broker, GMAC, gave us a little gift bag with a tape measure and card inside. Also inside the card was a $25 gift card to the Home Depot. How nice!

We left closing around noon and since everyone was on their lunch break, we did a bit of shopping to waste some time. For lunch we went to a Polish buffet that Joe has been to and I’ve been wanting to try. The food was sooo fattening but delicious. I love Polish food. When I lived at home we’d have any large affair at a Polish buffet called Warsaw Inn. From graduations to after-funeral lunches, it was the place we always went.

After lunch we did some grocery shopping and picked up a movie from Blockbuster. Tomorrow we pick up the kids and go to my mom’s for her birthday party. It’s been a great weekend so far!

Walk-through

We did a walk-through of the new place tonight since we close on it tomorrow morning. It feels like such a tease to visit the place again without being able to move in, but what are you going to do? The owners are renting it from us until Oct 15th and apparently they are actually moving that day, so we’re not sure how much time we’ll have that Friday to get inside and start cleaning. I had taken the day off work but now I might just take a half day. No sense in taking what little time I have left if I have to sit around the apartment waiting for them to leave anyway.

Since we’re closing tomorrow, I have the day off. I was excited at the thought of being able to stay up late tonight but I’m so bored. No one was on the local bbs to chat with. Sure, next week when I have to work on Friday they will be there, mark my words.

I really want to start packing but can’t yet. Gah.

New table

I’m so excited! I finally convinced Joe to go with me to Big Lots and in their furniture section we found the most awesome table for only $100. While technically it’s a buffet table, we’re probably going to use it as an entry table, or a microwave stand in the kitchen. This thing is so versatile, who knows where it will end up. I was seriously tempted to purchase two. No photo yet … it needs to be put together but we won’t be doing that for a few weeks. So until we move, it’s just another item taking up space valuable real estate in our apartment. But it was too good of a deal to chance missing out on.

Exploring the new neighborhood

Yesterday Kohl’s had a huge anniversary sale. I really wanted to go shopping and get a few new pairs of shoes, but eventually decided not to. The biggest problem was that I had already seen the stock at the closest store and it wasn’t impressive, so we’d have to travel a bit further to the next closest store during rush hour traffic. Then I started thinking about how long the cashier lines get at Kohl’s on regular days and that was it. No go.

This is just another reason why I can’t wait to move. Our new place is a five minute drive from a huge mall and the surrounding area is chuck full of every store and restaurant you can imagine. Just about everything is in the same general area whereas now we have to go in completely opposite directions to visit both the Walmart and Target. In our new town they are across the street from one another. So instead of having to spend several days shopping, we can do all of it in one day and still hit all the places we like to go.

We drove around the new neighborhood a couple of weeks ago to get a feeling for where everything is located, other than the shopper’s paradise, and learned we have a brand new 24-hour Walgreens a block away. Across the street from our subdivision is a huge post office, and the library is only two/three blocks away (score!). On the safety front, it turns out that we live directly between two police stations – one for our town and the town we border on. That always makes me feel good. As our subdivision is on a golf course, all the landscaping is nice too. I’m really getting excited about the move. We close in 8 days and move in 22. Not too bad. I think when we first found out we had the place we had 50-something days before moving so we’re more than halfway there.

As moving day gets closer, I am going to be posting my list of things I will and will not miss about living here. I’m itching to start packing just because I’m bored. I went clean-crazy the past couple of days and scrubbed the toaster oven and kitchen floor. I got really lazy lately and need to get back in the mode as I’m going to have THREE bathrooms to clean in the new place. That’s three toilets. Yuck! I’m definitely not looking forward to that.
