Chicago Wolves

Last weekend I noticed there was a Groupon for tickets to see the Chicago Wolves play later the same week. I asked Joe to see if he could take Friday off so we could attend the Thursday evening game without worrying about lack of sleep. His boss approved so I purchased the Groupon.

The drive to Allstate Arena was a bitch due to traffic, so I’m glad Joe suggested leaving earlier than I would have, and grabbing dinner at one of the restaurants near the stadium. We ended up eating at the Culver’s down the street where many other Wolves fans, decked out in their team’s apparel, had the same idea.

We arrived about a half hour ahead of time which was perfect. Parking was $13 instead of $20 probably because it was a weeknight game. They were also lax about the whole parking situation, not requiring where you had to park like they do at concerts. We parked right along the edge so we could easily exit the lot without waiting in a long line (not that there would have been one anyway since the lot wasn’t very full).

After a nonexistent security check (really? I could have sneaked a bottle of water in if I had known… or a gun), we headed upstairs toward the nosebleed seats, which I honestly didn’t mind because I enjoy the line of sight sitting up higher to watch most sports, particularly hockey since it’s tough enough to follow the puck.

As we started to make our way around the stadium to our section, we decided why even bother. There weren’t that many people in the stadium overall, so we just chose an empty section we liked and settled there.

The opening to the game was very “explosive”, as seen here.

Wow, I could feel the heat even in the very last row!

Sitting on the end of the aisle in our new section was much better than sitting in our assigned seats which were smack dab in the middle of the 30+ seat row, especially because I had to get up to use the restroom several times. We had the entire row to ourselves too, which meant not having to get up to let people pass.

Allstate Arena Seating

You know how there’s always some people who cannot sit still in their seat for more than ten minutes? There were a few of those there, although luckily they sat elsewhere. One couple had to have eaten the equivalent of two meals during the two and a half hour event. How do people even justify that? “Yea, I know we just ate dinner, but this $10 burger that was likely microwaved a half hour ago is too delicious to pass up”. Another bonus to sitting away from everyone else – we could say whatever we wanted without the fear of being overheard. Needless to say, I started making fun of the couple who couldn’t stop packing it in. I turned to Joe and said, “here’s what I think he’s saying to her right now” –

First let me get a $12.50 beer and $8 pretzel, and then we can discuss where to go to dinner afterwards.

We burst into giggles because we’re mature like that, haha. The irony is that while we didn’t eat or drink anything at the game because the food is disgusting and outrageously overpriced, we did stop at a taco joint we used to frequent back when we first got together afterwards. Pot calling the kettle black much?

Random Observations:

» The Wolves aren’t nearly as interesting to watch as the Blackhawks. Plus they lost the game without even scoring once.

» There are loose birds in the stadium, one of which was in the bathroom. I felt bad for him because I’m guessing if they don’t do anything to get him out of the building he will eventually die. You can’t expect him to live on nasty stale pretzel pieces.

» The arena is severely outdated and rather small.

» The seats in particular are tiny. We felt crammed and we are not overweight or particularly tall. It brought back memories of when we went to see Dane Cook and the girl next to me violated my personal space.

» The sound system blows. Nothing was loud enough, but even the music volume was way better than the announcer. I have excellent hearing but I couldn’t understand much of what he was saying because it was quiet and muffled.

We probably won’t be visiting this arena again anytime soon unless The Cure decides to tour during the winter and forces me to come back.

Beautiful Sunday

Yesterday we decided to take advantage of Jamba Juice’s BOGO coupon and then head over the arboretum to drive around.

Panorama of Pines

From there we visited Willowbrook Wildlife Center so I could see Dot and Dash, the resident rats, as well as some other interesting animals they keep inside, including this turtle who wanted his portrait taken.

We also walked the portion of the trail that wasn’t still squishy from all the snow melting, and then headed over to Cosley Zoo where the fox showed me what he thought of my picture-taking.

Red Fox

While there I also got another frog to add to my growing collection (the all red one in the back).

Right now they sit on top of my computer tower, but I’m planning to put up some shelves over my computer desk to display them along with a few other collectibles I have.

Chocolate Expo & Snowpocalypse 2015

After checking the weekend forecast, and seeing a blizzard was heading our way, we crammed all our errands into Saturday. We started the morning with a stop at McDonald’s for breakfast and then went to the Chocolate Expo at the Morton Arboretum. I only found out about it a week prior when one of the vendors who I happen to follow on Facebook mentioned they would be there. We got there at 9 am when it started so it wasn’t too crowded. I did kick myself, however, for getting McDonald’s when I saw that their restaurant was serving breakfast and had my favorite, eggs benedict. Oh well.

The place quickly got crowded and by the time we left an hour and a half later you could barely get close enough to a booth to garner a free sample. Interestingly enough, the only thing I ended up buying was toffee. I don’t even like toffee, but this stuff was really good (we tried a sample when we first arrived).

Next we headed to Petco so I could get a new hammock for Milo and Gizmo since they weren’t using their new one (and of course before I could switch them, they suddenly decided to start using it, grrr) and then Costco for a few things. After that we stopped at the library to pick up a couple of holds that were waiting for me. I got this book which was super cute and made me laugh. I also got a few back issues of my favorite magazine, ShopSmart. I just learned this week that you can put magazines on hold so I plan to catch up on all the issues I missed during the holidays since they are never available. You can only read the most current issue since that one isn’t allowed to be checked out.

After the library we also stopped at Walmart and nixed Target. I was just done with running around at that point.

That evening we ended up watching Gone Girl and I was reminded again how much I hated the ending; it was the same as the book since the author wrote the screenplay. I loved the book so much when I read it years ago but felt the ending was a big cop-out. That’s all I will say lest I spoil it for someone.

Sunday we slept in and just hung out watching tv and reading while it snowed. When all was said and done there was 19″ of snow on the ground although it doesn’t look like that much from this photo I took.

Snowpocalypse 2015

I read that this weekend’s storm was the 5th worst in Chicago history. I guess it’s hard to feel affected when you’re holed up inside the entire time, though.

Due to the weather Joe worked from home today and I just went about my normal Monday cleaning routine. I’m so glad I didn’t have to worry about trying to get to work. I’ve been lucky this winter that all the bad weather seems to be falling on my days off.

Visited States

Everyone is posting these on Facebook lately, but I’d figured I’d post mine here instead.

Create Your Own Visited States Map

Even though I’ve been checking Facebook here and there, I haven’t interacted with it since the end of October. It’s been a little self-imposed experiment for me to see what life would be like not posting so much online and I have to admit, after the first week where it just felt weird, I don’t miss it much. The problem with Facebook (or any social media network, really) is that you see all the stuff everyone else is doing and you can’t help but make comparisons. And, as Teddy Roosevelt said, comparison is the thief of joy.

I rather miss the days where you’d live your life offline except for coming home and posting about your day on your blog. Now everyone just posts little tidbits all over social media constantly as they are doing said things. I’m not necessarily saying it’s a bad thing, it’s just different and I miss the way things were before.

Back to the map – if you check here you will see that we’ve traveled a decent amount since 2004 when my map wasn’t nearly as populated. As it stands now I’ve visited half the states in the country. I’d like to hit more of the east coast since I know it’s just a matter of time before we move out west. I’m not so sure about the southern states, though. I don’t have much of a desire to visit Arkansas, Kansas, Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi so they may remain unvisited indefinitely.

Racine Zoo, Pizza, and Kenosha

Saturday we decided to visit Racine Zoo since it had been four years since our first and only visit. I knew from checking their site that they were doing their own Boo at the Zoo, but I didn’t know that meant the zoo was opening an hour later than usual. The Boo at the Zoo hours are listed as 10-1 but they didn’t close at 1 pm so why would I expect the opening time be any later than 9 am like usual? No wonder we got parking directly in front of the zoo at almost 9:30 am. I’m just glad we were “running late” and didn’t have to stand around a full hour. I also don’t understand why when we first approached the ticket window the girl asked if we were there for Boo at the Zoo; when I said no we were still told they weren’t opening until 10 am. Sooo… why did it matter why we were there?

Since the zoo is right on Lake Michigan we walked down by the lake for a bit to kill some time. By the time we went back to the zoo to stand in line there were tons of kids in their cute little costumes impatiently waiting to get in.

Lake Michigan

Unfortunately the zoo is even crappier than I remember. Sure, it’s small, but what makes it crappy is how spread out everything is with not much to see. They raised their admission prices (although we got in free due to a reciprocal deal with our local zoo) yet haven’t done anything in the last four years to make the zoo more appealing. Maybe they can’t afford to add additional exhibits (though they definitely have the space), but they had even less animals on display than four years ago. The fennec fox exhibit was gone and there were like three kangaroos in the spot where I swear there were many more. Look, one of them was even dead and rigor mortis was already setting in!

Red Kangaroo

I kid, I kid! He was just enjoying a little nap.

The thing I loved most about this zoo last time we visited was how the meerkat and penguin exhibits were designed. The meerkats are just funny little guys and I got some pics of them peering up at us.

Meerkats

I was disappointed to see the penguins were off exhibit which was ironic considering the fact that the zoo’s idea of decorating for Halloween was to paint penguins on some pumpkins around the park.

Pumpkin

That was the extent of the decorating and it was super disappointing. We ended up visiting for only an hour and that’s only because we spent a good twenty minutes watching the lion cubs playing, which was the only redeeming part of our visit.

Lion Cub

The photos would have come out better had I not been shooting through dirty plexiglass with some crazy reflections, but what can you do? As soon as we walked away all the little cubs got right up against the glass too. Figures! We walked back over but I couldn’t get any photos because all the kids were crowding around where they were hanging out, but I did get a nice up-close pic of the lioness.

Lioness

We headed over to Wells Brothers pizza for lunch and really enjoyed their crispy thin-crust pizza, then to Harbor Park in Kenosha just to walk around a bit. I thought this sculpture was rather cool.
