Halloween Traditions

This weekend included a few of our Halloween traditions, just the two of us, because E decided that he would rather stay home so that he could go on a date with his new girlfriend. I was rather bummed because this was the first year since we started our Halloween traditions with the kids that we had no kids with us. I contemplated canceling everything but decided that would only make me feel worse.

Saturday morning we decided to head over to DeKalb to attend Northwestern University’s STEMfest. It wasn’t quite what I was anticipating, because it was geared mostly towards children, but it was still something different to do, and best of all it was free.

We scoured Yelp looking for somewhere to eat lunch in Dekalb but nothing seemed appealing so we headed towards home. We ended up stopping in St. Charles at a place I had bookmarked called Beef Shack. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive because the only beef sandwiches I’ve ever liked are at Portillo’s. Luckily this place alleviated my fears – their beef sandwich was, dare I say it, better than Portillo’s! Not only was the French bread less chewy, the beef wasn’t fatty at all, and the amount of melted mozzarella cheese was perfect. I couldn’t finish my sandwich and it was even better cold the next day.

After lunch we headed over to Sonny Acres to grab some apple cider donuts. The weather was overcast and cold so we made a quick walk around the grounds just to see what they were offering this season and then we got a dozen donuts and left. We ended up eating the donuts when we got home and let me tell you, they were the best apple cider donuts I’ve ever had – incredibly moist and very flavorful. It’s a good thing they don’t sell them year round or I’d gain a ton of weight. Between the two of us we polished off the entire dozen before Tuesday!

Saturday evening we decided to take the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes tour in St. Charles. There were 13 total houses participating in the contest, but based on previous years’ notes we skipped a handful of them because they are/were lame.

Our first stop was this house on a dead-end street. They turn their lawn into a graveyard and have live actors walking about. There’s this one young girl who creeps me out. This year they had fenced in the graveyard and turned their lawn into a mini haunted house. I was a chicken and didn’t go and now I wish I had. Oh well, maybe next year!

The second house we visited is one where they carve a shit ton of pumpkins and put them all around their lawn. They always come out so nice!

At this one house we visit every year they have live actors that follow you around the house, and beyond, to try and creep you out. This one guy always follows me! I even tried to get a selfie with him one year. This year he followed me when we first got there and when we went back to the car to leave. He loves me for some reason, LOL!

Vitale Family

I was disappointed to learn that one of our favorite homes didn’t participate this year. I hadn’t even thought about checking if they were on the list; I just automatically assumed they were and was shocked when we arrived at the house and it wasn’t decorated at all. I guess they got tired of all the effort.

On our way to the tour we decided to stop at Dunkin’ Donuts to grab some hot chocolate. I had scoured their menu online beforehand to see if they were still offering the dark hot chocolate that I had tried about two years ago that I really liked. Unfortunately they only offer regular hot chocolate, salted caramel and mint flavors. I decided to opt for the latter, but when we went through the drive-through the woman working it claimed they only had the regular flavor. Joe and I decided to get to regular small hot chocolates, but were bummed that they didn’t have the other flavors. And based on the way the woman answered us when we asked her what flavors were available, I’m still not sure if she was mistaken or if that particular location just doesn’t offer the same menu. Either way I will probably not stop at that one again.

Meadow Lake

Sunday morning we headed over to Morton Arboretum to take a look at their glass pumpkin patch. I love all the different colors of glass pumpkins that they offer, and if I had the money and space I’d probably buy a few, but the least expensive one I saw was $45. Plus I don’t know what I would really do with them when they weren’t on display since I’d be afraid to store them in the garage. But feel free to take a look at all the cool pictures I took!

Glass Pumpkin

After the Arboretum we headed to Walmart so that I could return two rugs and get different sizes. Then we went across the street to Target for groceries, but nothing on my list was on sale so all we ended up buying was unhealthy snacks (Doritos and Fritos).

We got home just in time for Joe to watch the Bears game and he made us both a plate of nachos since we were starving. The rest of the day was a lazy one and I had to bust butt on Monday to catch up on cleaning before my work week began.

Scarecrow Festival

Saturday morning we headed to St. Charles to check out the scarecrow festival. We stopped at Walmart first where I ended up spending $60 on a pair of Cuddl Duds (cheapest place to get their stuff; everything was $10), two pairs of warm acrylic socks, and a heated throw to use at work since once it dips below 60 degrees my legs freeze in the office even wearing layers. Since the thermostat is always set to the same temperature I can only surmise it’s due to the cold ground since the office is just tile laid out on concrete.

Anyway, the scarecrows, as always, were super cute. Even though I didn’t go ga-ga over Frozen, I did like this one a lot.

Frozen

We actually spent three hours at the festival mostly walking around checking out the craft booths and people-watching. They had a petting zoo set up which was cute. It even had a wallaby! We only spent $5 and that was on a bacon ranch mac and cheese puff of doom. It was yummy!

We debated going on a haunted hayride in the evening at the local pumpkin farm but it’s not as much fun when it’s just the two of us and the couple we invited couldn’t make it and my brother wasn’t interested. We ended up staying in and watching a movie instead.

Today we skipped going to Target since nothing on the grocery list was critical. I gave the rats their third mite treatment (at the request of my vet to make sure they are really gone) and cleaned out all the cages. I made enchilada chicken in the crockpot and turned them into tacos which we ate while watching the Bears game.

I’m not looking forward to tomorrow. I have my MRI at 9 am and then I’m getting a flu shot at my doctor’s office. Yay.

Chicago Botanic Garden

Beautiful Dahlia

Sunday morning we headed to the Chicago Botanic Garden since it’s been awhile since our last visit and admission is free with our Morton Arboretum membership. I was itching to test out my new phone’s panorama feature but it doesn’t seem any better than the 4S in that respect. In fact, it seems worse, but it may be due to the drastically different lighting in the scenes I was trying to photograph since the sun had just risen. I guess what I’m saying is only time will tell for sure whether the camera is worse or better. I did try out the slo-mo video option which is pretty cool, but was disappointed to learn the only way to remain the slow motion settings is by uploading from the phone directly to YouTube.

We stopped at Smoque right when they opened to pick up some delicious BBQ beef brisket which we took home and ate while watching the Bears game. Well, Joe watched while I kinda stared off into space and ate since football doesn’t thrill me in the least. Then I worked on some of my photos.

The end of a weekend really bums me out since I always feel so incredibly happy spending time with Joe. I spent most of today cleaning the house and I’m not looking forward to the rest of the week. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful I only have to work three days a week but honestly I wish we’d just win the a Mega Millions so neither of us had to work again. I feel sorry for people who retire and don’t know what to do with themselves. I can think of plenty of things to do other than work. I only get bored when Joe isn’t around to spend time with.

Loud Teenagers, Selling My iPhone, Etc.

Another fabulously fun weekend has come to an end. Luckily Joe didn’t have to work on Saturday so we actually had two days together.

But first we had to get through Friday night’s high school football game to see E in the marching band. It seems like every time we go to a game the crowd gets worse and worse. This time there was a teenage girl sitting next to me who kept flipping her head around so fast to look at her classmates sitting behind her that was I literally getting slapped in the face by her long ponytail! I wish I was making this up! And even though I kept moving away from her she managed to keep moving closer to me. She also elbowed me several times and kicked my water bottle onto the ground without any apology. The kids sitting behind us kept kneeing me in the back and screaming in our ears as well. By the time half-time came around I was ready to assault someone. We left the bleachers and went down by the fence to watch E’s performance before leaving. I have absolutely no desire to go to another game ever again but if we have to, I will just stand by the field instead of subject myself to the rude and obnoxious behavior of teenagers. I just can’t believe how loud and fidgety they all were! My god, it made me so anxious! I was so incredibly happy to get back to the calm solitude of our home.

Saturday started out with a trip to the doctor because Joe’s arm has been hurting him. He may have torn something lifting weights so she gave him a referral to a specialist. She also ordered some blood work and EKG because he’s 45 now and it’s been awhile since the former and I guess with his age she wanted to check his heart with the latter. We headed straight over to the hospital to get both tests out of the way since we were close and he just so happened to have been unintentionally fasting which was required of the blood tests.

Once we were done with all that we met up with a guy who was interested in buying my iPhone 4S which I had posted on Craigslist. I was initially asking for $250 when I posted it last weekend but wasn’t getting any interest because there were a ton of people selling the same phone in my area. I bumped it down to $199 and he asked if $170 was ok. Seeing as though I paid $200 and used it for three years I was fine with that. I even threw in three cases and a portable battery because they were useless to me now anyway. The guy was nice and was purchasing the phone for his niece to play games on as she’s only six years old. He was telling us how he spoils her.

It feels weird to no longer have the phone, but I’m sure I’ll get over it soon. I actually had a dream about it the other night and started feeling anxious about getting rid of it. Does this happen to anyone else where they become attached to an inanimate object? I think this is why I never ended up selling my iPhone 3GS which is now collecting dust. I pulled it out yesterday and charged it and it felt so small yet heavy! I’m actually giving it away to Brother #1 to play games on. Once I get over the weird sense of loss I will be happy to not have these useless devices sitting around the house. I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff we have so anything I can find a new home for is a good thing.

After selling my phone we decided to pay Cosley Zoo a visit since I’d been itching to take some photos.

Mallard Duck

I really wish I had a longer zoom lens, though. I checked last night and Canon released a ton of new rebates but unfortunately they’re for L lenses (the big expensive white ones that typically go for $1200+). What a bummer!

On the way home we checked out the new Caputo’s grocery store that opened on Thursday. It’s now the closest grocery store to the house and technically within walking distance although I wouldn’t brave crossing the busy intersection it’s on to walk there. It’s sectioned off in an interesting way and I haven’t decided whether I like it or find it obnoxious. It was super busy which sucked but we’d probably shop there early morning (they open at 6 am every day) anyway so it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Plus it will come in handy on those occasions where I’m missing a key ingredient for dinner and don’t want to spend a fortune at Target since it’s usually produce which is way overpriced there.

Labor Day Weekend

Last Sunday we got up early and grabbed breakfast at McDonald’s and then went to Jamba Juice to take advantage of their BOGO coupon offer. $5 for a small drink is excessive in my eyes but I’ll splurge occasionally and get two drinks for that price! The five fruit frenzy is just too good! After snagging our drinks we drove to the arboretum to get our free gift for renewing our membership. I renewed online for two years this time which, while a bit steep at $170, is cheaper per year than doing one year at a time, plus includes bonus tickets to their Acorn Express Tram Tour which is fun.

The mosquitos were out in full force, however, and Joe is a mosquito magnet, so we didn’t hang out as long as we originally planned. I did grab this awesome panorama, though.

Morton Arboretum Panorama 2

I don’t really think my phone takes great shots (probably because I’m spoiled from my SLR) but the panoramas almost always impress me. I love the clouds in this shot!

On the way home we stopped at Willowbrook Wildlife Center where I was surprised to see they had lots of baby rats. They house snakes so I have a bad feeling they are raised as food. In any case, don’t they look like little hippos? So cute!

Baby Rats

We puttered around the house for a couple of hours and then headed to my parents to hang out. We set up the bad minton net and played with my dad, brothers, and Brother #2’s girlfriend for a couple of hours until dinner was ready. My cousin, who I haven’t seen in forever (but have been chatting with pretty regularly the past couple of months thanks to Facebook messenger), even showed up! She ended up having to leave to pick up her son from work before we played any board games, however. I brought two games but we only ended up playing Smartass. It was a fun time, as usual. The only thing that sucks is the hour ride home.
