Robert Smith and the freebie list

Did you catch The Cure on the Leno show last night? I stayed up until 11:30 pm just to see them. I admit, I don’t know what to make of their new single. It didn’t seem to flow very well and left me feeling like The Cure I’ve known and loved for years is gone. Honestly, with each album, they get worse. And the ironic thing is that they were spitting out fantastic albums at a pace of once a year, and now when they have four year gaps between them, this is all they can come up with? I sincerely hope this is not an indication of the new album’s sound, or I’m going to be sorely disappointed. Oh, and Robert is looking quite chubby these days, although I still find him sexy.

Which leads me to a conversation I had with Joe today. I mentioned to him that Robert Smith is on my “freebie list”, which I got from a Friends episode (#305 – “The gang all consider what five celebrities would be on their “freebie list”–people they can sleep with without anyone getting upset”). In addition to Robert Smith, my list contains Nick Lachey, John Corbett, Jason Statham, and Will Ferrell. Not your typical list, I know. No Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or Mel Gibson. I almost said Ben Affleck, but there’s something about his personality that really bugs me, which is why he didn’t make the list.

To be honest, I was hard pressed to come up with enough guys to fill the list. I just think the majority of the men out there don’t “do it” for me. And the ones that used to, no longer do (like David Hasselhoff and Nicholas Cage). I could easily name attractive women in a much faster time frame. Not that I would ever want to sleep with a woman, but just for the hell of it, here’s my top 5 in terms of attractiveness. Keep in mind this has nothing to do with personality, although with the men I had to like what I knew about them personally before considering them: Kate Beckinsale, Katie Holmes, Sandra Bullock, Drew Barrymore, and Jessica Simpson.

So who’s on your list?

“Looking so long at these pictures of you”

20040111-poy.jpg As some of you are aware, The Cure re-released Pictures of You on January 6th. I originally pre-ordered it from CD Universe but then cancelled it because I am cheap. I didn’t want to pay shipping on it and then pay for shipping again on the 27th when the b-sides box set I pre-ordered was released. I figured I’d just get both around the 27th to save the $3.

But then I found out that this single is really difficult to find because only a limited quantity have been issued, and no reprints will be made. I checked some local stores and every music store online that I could think of to no avail. So yesterday we’re at the mall and Joe suggested I check the FYE. Of course they didn’t have it. As we’re leaving, we passed a really tiny (FYE is easily five times bigger) Sam Goody store (aren’t they owned by the now defunct Musicland?) and he suggested I check there. I said, “Why bother? There is no way they’d have it.” He suggested I check just in case and wouldn’t you know it, they had not one, but two copies. So yea, I bought them both. Just think about how much this gem will go for on ebay down the road! I’m pure evil.

Plastic Passion

The new Cure box set, Join The Dots, is being released January 27, 2004 and I’ve already pre-ordered my copy. Have you?

I’m very excited to own this gem! Unlike this one chick who wrote a negative review on the upcoming release (unfortunately I lost the link), because she felt The Cure was merely releasing this material for sole financial gain, I think they are finally doing their fans a great service. Many of the songs that span the 4 disc collection cannot be found on cd save for a poorly made dub of a cassette tape or vinyl single. Clearly the girl writing the review doesn’t know her ass from a hole in the wall when it comes to The Cure. The fans, however, know better, and have been asking for this release for well over 5 years, if not longer. Robert Smith has teased us with the notion for far too long, so it’s long past due.

Latest Cure News

For my fellow Cure fans (I know there’s a few of you out there), I have big news: Apparently that b-sides/rarities box set that The Cure had been talking about oh so many years ago has finally come into existence. It’s called ‘Join The Dots – The B-sides & Rarities Collection’ and is a 4 cd box set. It’s due to be released in January … just in time for my birthday. I couldn’t be happier!

The best part about this is that I will finally own decent recordings of songs like A Japanese Dream and Throw Your Foot. Happy happy joy joy!!!
