Fall Fun

Saturday morning we ventured over to Sonny Acres to enjoy some apple cider donuts. It was a little cool and overcast but not too bad, although there was hardly anywhere to sit since it had rained that morning and all the benches & picnic tables were wet.

Tangent: I will never understand why no one running the business thinks of drying them off, although I made this suggestion when I reviewed the place on Facebook. How much time and effort could it take to send an employee with a towel or two over to the seating area to dry everything off? I know as a customer I would notice and appreciate this gesture. Another thing that I think would enhance their business is if an employee walking the grounds offering to take photos so that mom and dad both can be in the picture with their kids. It would foster goodwill with the community. And finally, why the heck don’t they even list the apple cider donuts on their website? They mention lots of other food but not the donuts and I’m pretty sure they are highly coveted during this time of the year. Perhaps I should have gone into marketing – I can always spot ways in which a business can improve their service.

We only got a half dozen donuts ($8 – yikes!) which turned out to be a good call since they no longer put them in the plastic container but just throw them in a paper bag. We ate four of the six while we people-watched for a good hour before growing cold and leaving. We then headed to Old Time Pottery so I could look at the seasonal decor. I bought two mini purple lanterns ($1.29 each) that I added to each end of the fireplace mantel and a “give thanks” sign ($5) for Thanksgiving since I really don’t own any Thanksgiving decor.

Saturday evening we took the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes tour in St. Charles. Our first stop was a new participant and we were surprised we were the only visitors as they did a great job with the home and the three live actors.

The next house we visited wasn’t too impressive but the one after that was a house on a large corner lot with an expansive graveyard. It was packed with people compared to the first two homes we visited. They actually won best house from the judges (Saturday was judging night) but I think it was more for the 10-foot tall pirate skeleton that was roaming the property and talking to visitors since nothing about the rest of the decor was all that thrilling. I didn’t get a great photo of the costume, but you get the idea.

Our next stop was a house we’ve been visiting for many years. It’s on a dead-end street and we usually just drive past because the live actors creep me out. This time we decided to get out of the car to investigate the getup more closely and that’s how I got roped into walking through their yard/garage haunt. They purposely had us wait until the other people went ahead so we weren’t in a big group. The first part is alongside their home toward the backyard. It’s lined with cornstalks and people jump out to startle you, which of course made me scream. It was much of the same the entire way but fun at the same time. It’s a free way to get a little scare.

There were another eight houses after that and only one of them was lame so overall it was an enjoyable evening.

Sunday evening we headed to Beef Shack for dinner and then back to Sonny Acres for a haunted wagon ride (I always want to call it a haunted hayride but there’s not any hay). It’s been five years since we last went on the ride due to factors like weather and no one wanting to join us. Well, we still couldn’t find anyone up to joining us but the weather was literally in the 70’s so we jumped at the opportunity to go without freezing our butts off.

Unlike five years ago the line was not in total darkness so that was good. We were both surprised by how crowded it was, however. We figured a Sunday would be less so since people have to work the next day. We arrived around 6:40 pm and the first ride time (7 pm) was already sold out, so we got tickets for 7:20.

Haunted Wagon Ride Ticket

We actually got on the ride closer to 7:10, however, and our wagon wasn’t completely full which was nice. We weren’t allowed to take any photos or video, though, so that kinda sucked. The ride isn’t really scary even with people jumping out and hanging onto the wagon, but it was still fun. It’s just not something I can see myself doing too often as I think we’d grow bored. Plus it’s $10 per person which isn’t exactly cheap.

Once we got off the ride around 7:30ish the place was much less crowded and there was hardly a line for the haunted wagon ride. So note to self – 8 pm on a Sunday might be the best time to go to avoid long lines.

Glass Pumpkin Patch

Since I called sick into work Tuesday I decided to go into the office for a few hours this morning from 7-10. Wow, if I only had to work 3 hours every day that would be awesome!

Anyway, after coming home to grab a few things we were off to the arboretum to check out their glass pumpkin patch. We were absolutely shocked by how many people were there at 11 am on a Friday morning. Doesn’t anyone work (asks the girl who works 3 days a week with a husband who is unemployed)? I’ve never seen such a long line just to get into the grounds. Luckily we decided to try our luck instead of turning around and heading home (which was our initial inclination) because the pumpkin patch wasn’t as crowded as we thought it was going to be. On top of that, the pumpkins weren’t on sale yet so there were tons to photograph and I didn’t have to worry about getting in the way of someone trying to make a purchase.

After browsing the patch we walked around the lake and then headed back to the car to drive the grounds. Unfortunately the fall colors aren’t at their peak yet so I didn’t really take any pictures of the trees.

After the arboretum we headed to Chipotle for lunch since we had scored a BOGO coupon. Too bad we forgot to use the gift card I had or it would have been free, but $10 for two burritos and chips with guacamole isn’t bad either.

After lunch we stopped by the vet to get more medicine for Gizmo. I keep having an issue with this one medication he’s on where they give me what they deem is enough and I run out of it well before I should. I picked up what should have been a 2 week supply last week and it’s almost gone only a week later. I thought maybe they weren’t giving the correct total amount but they said they are and that maybe something is going on at the pharmacy that compounds it and it’s evaporating or something. It’s the strangest and most frustrating thing because I am measuring it out correctly. I really hate that medication but without it Gizmo would likely die.

We stopped at home to drop off the medicine and then went to Walmart because I wanted to look for Tsum Tsum pajama pants that someone had posted they have. Unfortunately I didn’t see any, but I did end up buying this pair since I love purple and I love owls.

I know they are going to be super comfy like my Star Wars and polar bear pajama pants.

We also went to Target for a few items. I love it when the balance due is $42.50 but then after coupons and Cartwheel it’s only $29.

Saturday Shenanigans

Saturday was the only day this weekend we really did anything. We went to Septemberfest in Schaumburg to check out the craft tents where the idiots over at the local Lexus dealer almost hit me with their car (more on that in a bit), we visited Spring Valley Nature Center (also in Schaumburg) for a little while which was nice since we hadn’t been there in years, and later in the evening we went to my parents house for dinner. That should say dinner and games but we never got around to playing any which stinks because we bought Left Center Right from Target the day before specifically for our visit.

So about almost getting hit. We were sitting at the end of one of the tables outside which was against a raised curb. Well this guy was backing one of the cars the dealership was raffling off onto the grass at an angle. I first noticed it out of the corner of my eye but then I really noticed it when I felt hot exhaust on my arm. I jumped out of my chair as the back end of the car got within inches of me. Even the people two tables away were shocked what happened. The worst part was when the driver got out and Joe told him he almost hit me the guy just laughed. When my husband asked him what was so funny he tried to play it off and said he saw me in the backup camera (I don’t know if that’s even true since someone outside the vehicle was directing the guy (not very well, obviously)). The dumbest thing is five minutes later they moved both cars so they weren’t so close to the edge of the grass anyway. Idiots!

The visit to the nature center was nice and relaxing. We saw a bunch of frogs by the lake area which was cool.

My brother, B, and his girlfriend also came to my parents for dinner and I was talking to them about their October trip to Florida. They go on a lot of little trips but this will be only the second time my brother has flown (the first being when he was five and our grandparents took us to Disney World). I was really only talking to his g/f about the trip but she was saying he’s not nervous about flying and she in fact loves it (especially the takeoffs which are the part I hate the most). I envy her for not being afraid, I truly do. Anyway, they are visiting Universal Studios and she said they want to visit Magic Kingdom (she kept calling it United Kingdom which was cute and I didn’t have the heart to correct her) and Hollywood Studios. They both love Halloween and haunted houses so the Universal thing is the main draw from them since they really do it up for the holiday. Disney’s Halloween stuff is rather lame, but since they are going to be so close they can’t pass up a chance to visit Disney, and who can blame them?

I invited my cousin over too and she brought a laundry basket of CDs she no longer wants so I went through it and took a decent stack. Even though we got there around 6 and didn’t leave until midnight absolutely no games were played. Brother B and my cousin took off sometime around 9 which kinda sucked. I didn’t care for how B was talking to my mom but I stayed out of it. He can just be so rude and self-serving. Not that this is a new complaint of mine. I have literally not talked to him in months (I texted him twice and got no acknowledgement) and he spent most of his time talking to Joe and not me. I really don’t understand him – he will go from calling me every other day and coming over and staying the night to not talking to me at all for months. We don’t have any kind of fallout, either, he just swings from one extreme to the next. I would prefer it if we were in low-level contact more frequently, but it doesn’t matter what I want, B does what serves him and doesn’t consider other people’s feelings. I think he thinks he does but he really doesn’t.

Milwaukee Zoo

We decided to visit Milwaukee Zoo today since admission is free with our Cosley Zoo membership which is due to expire in four days. I don’t think we’re going to renew it for awhile since we just visited not long ago and we usually get our money’s worth by visiting other zoos where we can get in free or for half price but we don’t have any vacations currently planned. Plus in December admission is free for their zoo lights so we might wait until next year to renew, or when Joe gets a job, whichever comes first.

I think today’s visit was our longest ever, probably because it wasn’t too hot or crowded. I brought my newest zoom lens (55-250 mm) and was rather disappointed with its performance, particularly in low light. My 28-135 mm lens produces much sharper images but doesn’t have the reach. Luckily I was still able to get some halfway decent shots by playing around with the settings. I just wish I could afford a higher quality zoom lens so I can get the shots I want. Maybe some day!

I was happy to get a few photos of the red panda even though he wouldn’t stop moving so they aren’t as sharp as I would have liked.

Once we left the zoo (after being there 3.5 hours) we visited the new Mars Cheese Castle.

Mars Cheese Castle

The last time we visited we weren’t impressed but the new one is much nicer.

From Wikipedia:

In 2011, a project widening Interstate 94 forced the store to relocate 50 yards (46 m) away from the freeway. The new store, over twice as large as the previous building, was designed to more closely resemble an actual castle; it features a watchtower holding the store’s wine and an entrance which resembles a drawbridge. A special statute passed by the Wisconsin Legislature allowed the store to keep its 80-foot (24 m) sign at its new location despite a state law prohibiting signs that tall.

We purchased a couple of pastries and then drove to The Brat Stop for lunch where Joe had a brat and I had a cheeseburger which I had been craving all day. We had packed a lunch for the zoo but decided not to eat it.

Armstrong Park & Family Game Night

Another fun-packed weekend is over.

Friday we visited Armstrong Park again because I wanted to see the Purple Martins. We didn’t spot any, but I did get a few good photos of some egrets and a great blue heron.

Saturday was our rescheduled (from July) game night at my second cousin’s house. We arrived around 3:30 pm and debated whether to go swimming in the pool. It wasn’t quite as warm as I would prefer and then it started drizzling so we went back inside to chat. About an hour later her daughter, who is my first cousin, and her family arrived. I haven’t seen her in over a decade (the last time was at my grandmother’s funeral in 2003) so that was nice. Plus I got to meet her husband and 9 year old son. I also met my second cousin’s youngest daughter (she’s 22 or 23) when she got home from work. My second cousin and I were never really in contact until my uncle passed away two years ago which is why it took so long to meet her one daughter.

Anyway, my cousin made this ridiculously tasty blueberry vodka lemonade that I could not stop drinking. Luckily the alcohol content was weak since I have a low tolerance. We had a delicious dinner of grilled chicken, red potatoes, pasta salad, and a spinach salad with walnuts, cranberries, and feta. After dinner we played Uno Attack and then took a break for dessert which was the brownies I brought topped with ice cream. After dessert we played Aggravation and a game I had never played before called LCR (left right center). By that point it was 10 pm so we decided to get going since it’s about an hour and fifteen minute drive back home.

It was nice to spend time with family members we usually don’t socialize with. My mom and my second cousin never really got along so if it wasn’t for Facebook I probably never would have spent any time with her or her husband which is a shame because even if she wasn’t nice to my mom growing up she’s always been nice to me.

Sunday morning we decided to visit Armstrong Park again but to ride our bikes since it was a gorgeous cloudy day. The park has a very nice, mostly flat, paved path so we got almost an hour of riding in before I got tired.

Later the same afternoon I wanted to check out a small park in Wheaton called Hurley Gardens to take some flower photos. I brought my Canon SLR with the stock 18-55 mm lens and thought I was losing my mind when it wouldn’t focus on the flowers. Turns out something is wrong with the lens. Joe’s lens of the same type, plus my other lenses, work on my camera fine. I’m glad it’s not the camera itself since I wouldn’t be able to replace it for awhile.
