Cubs Game

A vendor at work was offering free tickets and parking pass to see The Cubs play yesterday. Since it was a weekday game no one else at work showed much interest so I got two tickets as did a coworker of mine. I’m not really a Cubs fan (go White Sox!) but I’m not passing up an opportunity for a nice day out for free either.

Our parking pass was for the Irving lot which is, predictably, off Irving Park Rd approximately four blocks away from Wrigley Field. It’s actually a narrow lot that sits directly underneath the L tracks. There’s porta potties in the lot too which was helpful since we needed to go and didn’t want to hold it until we reached the stadium.

We stopped at a food stand called Byron’s – Joe got a jumbo dog, I got a cheeseburger, and we shared an order of fries. It was just under $13 for everything and we stuck the bag of food in Joe’s backpack along with the three bottles of water we brought along.

Wrigley Field
Not our gate (which as K), but a different view of the stadium than we’re used to seeing

Security at the gate consisted of someone checking bags and then walking through a metal detector. As I always say about most security at venues, it’s an illusion. The girl didn’t look so thoroughly enough that someone couldn’t sneak a weapon inside. As Joe noted, she didn’t check underneath the water bottles, and the bags go into a bin outside the metal detector, so someone could easily sneak a gun inside. It’s an illusion of security and nothing more.

I’m glad they don’t prohibit bringing in your own food and snacks, though. We knew the factory sealed water bottles would be ok, but we weren’t sure about the food since their site doesn’t say it’s allowed, yet it’s not on their list of prohibited items either.

Once we found our seats (the view wasn’t that impressive unfortunately), we chowed down on our food.

Cubs Game
Just some random people sitting in front of us

My coworker showed up after the game had started with a friend of his who seemed nice, if not a bit drunk and talkative. They weren’t there long before they disappeared for two innings. They came back armed with many beers and food but only stuck around for half an inning before leaving.

Unlike our last Cubs game 12 years ago, it wasn’t quite as cold outside. I wasn’t taking any chances, however, and wore my Cuddlduds under my jeans, brought my winter jacket, and packed my lavaseat (heated seat), a scarf, and a knitted cap with me. I also had my gloves and some hand warmers too. At first I felt silly with all that gear because the sun was quite warm, but just before the game our section became all shade and that made a huge difference. By the time we left during the 7th inning we were both pretty cold (and my heated seat cushion had cooled off even though it’s supposed to last six hours but was more like four).

In all it was a nice little outing that only cost us $13 in food and whatever the price of gas was so I can’t complain.

Ironically enough, they played the same exact team as last time – the Colorado Rockies – only this time they lost 4-1.

Roller Skating Party

The nice thing about Joe and I both having Mondays off is that we can go out on Sundays without stressing about the weekend almost being over.

Sunday we went to a private roller skating party in Lombard organized by one of our Meetup groups. We didn’t recognize anyone there except for one girl we met during our board game meetup, but there wasn’t much time for socializing anyway. What was so fantastic was that there were under 80 people in attendance which made skating so much easier because there were less people to navigate around.

It’s funny how quickly you can get back into the groove even if you haven’t skated for years (which I haven’t; it’s been 5 since we visited a rink). I was shaky at first but by the end of the evening I was able to do the cross-over with my skates when turning without tripping myself. Joe had a little more difficulty turning since he opted to bring his roller blades. Neither one of us fell, however, which is more than I can say for a lot of the attendees. But I have to hand it to the people who clearly were struggling because at least they came out and tried.

A 2-hour private rental (on Sundays at least) is only $400; they charged $10 per person and donated the amount above the rental fee to a charity. I ended up having to rent skates for $4 since when I pulled out my roller blades earlier that afternoon to clean and try them on I discovered the plastic clasps were broken. They are over 20 years old at this point, but that stinks because I’d like to get back into blading when it gets warmer since it’s such good exercise and but doesn’t feel like it.

Speaking of exercise, there was a poster at the rink stating that an hour of roller skating burns 600 calories which is impressive, if it were true. But my weight loss app and a few other calculators online peg it closer to 350-400. Not that I’m complaining. I’d say we skated for about an hour and fifteen minutes total – we got there just after 4 when it started, took a few short breaks here and there, and left five minutes before 6 pm.

There was a disco theme to the gathering so some people were dressed up and they played mostly disco music, although I did get to hear Material Girl which was awesome (and P.Y.T. during the ladies only skate). I could not stop myself from singing along with Material Girl as I skated because I was getting some kind of endorphin high. I do NOT normally sing in public but I didn’t care; there’s something about skating that just feels so good as you glide along.

That being said, I did have to take small breaks since I was getting pain in my left leg, probably because I was exercising muscles I don’t use very often. I was smart, though, and wore a thicker pair of socks so I wouldn’t get any blisters, plus I used my shoe inserts in the skates to help with my arches. As a result I’m a lot less sore today than I might otherwise have been.

There was talk about possibly having the roller skating parties monthly which would be awesome. I don’t mind spending $25 a month for a good time and to burn a bunch of calories.

After the event we had a small dinner, popped some popcorn, and watched Daddy’s Home which was free thanks to a Redbox code. That movie did not look very promising based on the previews so we were both delightfully surprised by how entertaining it was. I think the ratings online don’t do it justice.

Milwaukee Visit

Friday February 26th we drove up to Milwaukee to see PostSecret: The Show.

PostSecretTix

We stopped at Oscar’s Pub & Grill for dinner where we both had burgers which we really enjoyed.

Once we arrived in the city proper we still had a decent amount of time to kill so we went to Bar Louie for drinks before the show. I had what they called the Festivus Sangria which was really yummy. We also scored a free appetizer when the kitchen accidentally made two for the same table and didn’t want it to go to waste.

Sangria

The show itself was very interesting. I liked our view, not that it was truly necessary given the large screen where the secrets would appear.

PostSecret: The Show

I have mixed feelings about the show itself. It was definitely interesting but there were too many sad/disturbing secrets. I guess that should have been expected but I hated how it made me teary-eyed. It was longer than I expected, but in a good way as that made the $38 per ticket (plus fees; although they were cheaper by calling the box office directly as opposed to buying through TicketMaster) easier to swallow.

Overall the evening was a nice little getaway for us. Since Milwaukee isn’t too far we opted to drive back home after the show instead of staying overnight in a hotel. That might have been more appealing had the weather been warmer, however.

Chicago Auto Show 2016

Soooo… our second Auto Show experience wasn’t nearly as good as our first one in 2014.

Chicago Auto Show

First off, we got confused at the exit and ended up on Lake Shore Dr. and had to get off and turn around. Coming from the North we couldn’t figure out how to find parking Lot A; Lot B was unappealing due to being outside and a decent walk from the venue. Somehow we ended up at some weird loading dock for McCormick Place because the person manning the booth into what I assume was a restricted area didn’t give a crap. Needless to say, we ended up parking in Lot B but were able to catch a free shuttle to the entrance so that part wasn’t bad at all.

Chicago Auto Show

We arrived shortly after the 9 am opening but it was already super crowded. On top of that, the two huge showrooms were set up differently than before so they were equally crowded and full of so many kids! It was super annoying how many times I couldn’t explore the inside a car I was interested in (because I’m in the market for a new vehicle) due to an eight year old sitting behind the wheel. Ugh! We agreed that next time we’ll go during the week since kids should be in school.

Chicago Auto Show

I did take a decent amount of photos with my new wide angle lens but I wasn’t really feeling it due to the crowds. We didn’t end up going on any of the “test rides” and only snagged two Ford reusable bags.

Chicago Auto Show

We left right before noon and had lunch at Golden Thai in University Village. Their food was so good that I’m sure we’ll be back there again one day.

Note: This cracked me up.

Basketball & Music

The Friday before last we went to E’s high school for a basketball game since the school band plays before and during the game. I wasn’t particularly looking forward to it since I’m not into sports, but it was surprisingly fun! The home team is really good and beat the visiting team by 30 points. The game definitely kept my attention which isn’t easy when it comes to sports. I was telling Joe that if forced to watch sports, the least boring ones are hockey, then basketball. I then proceeded to name a ton of other sports, including golf and curling, and then ended the list with football just to annoy him since he loves football. Honestly, I don’t mind it being on in the house but there’s no way I’m going to sit down and watch a game start to finish. I won’t even do that for hockey! I’ll go to a game, though.

When we entered the gym where the game was being held, Joe’s ex’s parents were in the stands and waved to us, so we went and sat with them. They are nice people and have always been friendly to me which I appreciate. I’ve spoken to them more over the years than his ex, in fact!

The following evening we ended up going to a local restaurant where Joe’s old friend from high school was playing drums with his band. It didn’t start until 9:30 pm which for us is nearly past our bedtime so it was weird to be going out so late. It was literally two stoplights from the house, though, so that helped. We ended up having a super late dinner listening to them play for an hour and a half. It was something different and I enjoyed it even though the music they played wasn’t my favorite (oldies).
