Websites and Legos

My schedule was off all week, peaking on Thursday because I had a conference call scheduled at 6 pm with one of the offices in another country. Since my shift normally ends at 4 pm, I came in late to even things out. Joe also had a late work evening, so we both didn’t have to get out of bed til 8 am. You may or may not be surprised how much a three hour shift difference throws things out of whack. All day I felt like my head was in the clouds. I like being up early so I can get home early. I don’t think I could ever go back to working 9-6 like I did when I worked for the cable company.

I stopped at the library on the way into work to pick up some more books on beading since I had so much time to kill. I have a necklace design for Joe finished, I just have to string it and I’m nervous about that. Plus I’ve been putting it off because we’ve been busy watching tv in an attempt to keep the DVR empty enough to pick up all the new Fall shows.

We’ve also been spending a good two hours every night playing Lego Star Wars II. That game kicks a$$! I never thought I’d be so addicted to a video game. I love how all the characters are rendered like Legos and when you slap someone it makes a clicky-clack noise. Too cute. Sometimes when we’re done with a level we’ll just sit there and slap one another which I am sure reduces our points but is too much fun to pass up. Right now we’re stuck in Dagobah and can’t find a way out, so I have to hunt down some hints online.

Man, I have a load of feeds to catch up on. I haven’t spent more than a half hour total on my home computer since Sunday (and I never read blogs from work). Last Sunday I spent a good three hours creating entries and uploading photos from the weekend and it really irritated me how long it took. It just further confirmed that it’s not how I want to spend my time anymore, particularly during the week. Since the kids are over this weekend and it’s raining, I’m slowly catching up on my reading. After I’m done I’m going to seriously reduce the feeds I’m subscribed to because I feel anxious having all those un-read feeds just sitting there.

Bored

Bleh. I am all internetted out. I didn’t even log on last night and now I have all these feeds to catch up on, yet I just don’t feel like reading them. I’ve been busy cleaning, cooking, working out, and watching tv. I think I need a break from the online world. Just a few days. I’m looking forward to a fun weekend that doesn’t include being on the computer. See you next week with tales and photos!

PSA

Just a quick public service announcement to let everyone know that I’ve been posting a lot of “private” entries as of late since I don’t know who reads this and would rather not have the more sensitive areas of my life broadcast to the entire world without my consent. Therefore, if you’re registered, please log in to access such entries. If you’re not already registered and would like access to the private posts, you can self register, but will need to e-mail me to be upgraded to see all entries. Therefore please include your name and URL when requesting the access so I know who you are. Thanks!

Burger King’s website sucks

I had a taste for a salad at lunch yesterday. My first stop to check the nutrition values was Burger King’s site. I checked their TenderGrill Chicken Salad since it’s my favorite. Even with full-fat dressing, it comes to only 490 calories (that includes their yummy garlic parmesan croutons) which turned out to be lower than any of the quasi-appealing salads at McDonald’s or Wendy’s. [Why is everyone obsessed with bacon bits? Is it just me who doesn’t care for them?] But this isn’t as much about the food as it is about their website. Although I have noticed that ever since I started counting calories again, I’m appreciating the food I eat more. Or obsessing over it. Semantics.

I understand that everyone and their brother codes their site to include Flash these days. It can be nice, there’s no doubt. But what it can also be is slow and annoying. That’s where BK’s site comes in. Granted, it turns out it’s slower in Firefox than IE, but still, the web designer should have tested their site in the two most popular browsers, don’t you think? Furthermore, I don’t want to watch a paper bag with BK’s logo on it rotate into different shapes and then turn into another animation representing the navigational item I’ve chosen before I get the result I want. If I ask to see the nutritional info, just show it to me. And how helpful is a flash map if I can’t copy and paste the address? I have to write it down? What’s that all about? I think they should worry a little less about how “cool” their site looks and code it to be quick and easy to use. A foreign concept, I know!

Elmhurst googles sex? Not necessarily

This story that is proliferating the internet and local radio stations is a bunch of bunk. Want to know why? It just so happens that the largest Comcast headend in the Chicagoland area is located in Elmhurst. It serves pretty much all the Comcast internet users of Cook and Dupage counties. And since Comcast is the biggest IP in the area, it’s no wonder the area has the highest hits on searches for sex. So yea, maybe those counties search for sex more than others, but it isn’t actually the residents living in Elmhurst. Anyone in Cook and Dupage has an IP address that traces back to that headend in Elmhurst, that’s all. I live 10 miles from the town but my IP address goes back to Elmhurst too. You’d think someone would have figured this out by now. So don’t believe everything you read. Google isn’t God. But apparently people in Illinois are horny.
