Staycation Day 7 – Indiana Beach

Staycation Day 7 (Thursday July 23)

E felt better so we stuck with our plan to visit Indiana Beach Amusement Park. We were up very bright and early (5 am) so we could leave at 6 am as we had multiple stops to make – gas station for fuel, ice (for the cooler) and a Coke product (for discounted admission to the park), E’s house so he could grab a few things, E’s girlfriend’s house as she was coming with us, and Brother #1’s house since he was also coming with us.

We arrived at the park at 10:30 am their time which was perfect since we got free parking close to the entrance and by the time we purchased our tickets and walked across the suspension bridge, the rides were just starting since they technically open at 11 am (not 10 am like I mistakenly thought).

Unlike previous years, there’s only one wristband they sell for $31.95 which includes nearly all the rides and the water park. I had checked their site ahead of time and learned Thursday was BOGO if you mentioned you liked them on Facebook (which is funny because they don’t even have an official Facebook presence). In addition, you could get $10 off each ticket with a Coke product. Since there were five of us that meant two free admissions and one discounted by $10. So instead of paying $159.75 the total was $85.85 (or $17.17 per person); and technically it was $63.90 out of pocket since my brother paid his own way. We ended up spending more than that on food even though we did make a trip back to the car for a meal later in the day. But who can resist tacos, corn dogs, and Dippin Dots, the last of which was $25 for four people (I opted out due to lactose intolerance)?

I went on a record 8 different rides this time around (not including the water ones) –

Paratrooper (aka Umbrellas) – I hate this ride but Brother #1 insisted and threatened to drag me on the Sea Dragon otherwise.

Scrambler – I think is my fave and I’m not sure why I was too nervous to ride it last year.

Den of Lost Thieves – I “won” this point-gathering ride by 10 points, woot!

Dodgem (aka Bumper Cars) – We went on this twice, in fact, since they’re way too much fun. And the first time we had an extra long session since there wasn’t anyone waiting.

Music Express – Minus the music as it was broken; oh well, at least it was operating unlike last year.

Rocky’s Rapids Log Flume – Poor E lost his beloved Deadpool hat on this ride and they wouldn’t send someone to get it. We tried to convince him he wouldn’t have wanted it back anyway since by that point it was water-logged and had been run over by subsequent riders and likely torn up.

Antique Autos – Ugh, this ride is just dumb so I made Brother #1 “drive” while Joe and I sat in back. The line is always so long too because they have two cars in operation even though they used to have three times as many.

Train – I had to end our visit taking the train from Kiddieland back to the suspension bridge because it’s a classic.

Rides I used to go on but now avoid –

Sky Ride – You can thank Joe for scaring me into not wanting to ride this one ever again. He has me convinced it’s a death trap.

Falling Star – My stomach cannot handle this one anymore.

Hooiser Hurricane – According to Joe and E, who rode this roller coaster, it’s really bumpy. I don’t recall since it’s been a log time since I last rode it.

The Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain was not running all day which was fine because that thing throws you around like there’s no tomorrow. I think we all ended up bruised the last time we rode it. I was bummed their Grand Carousel wasn’t running either. Then again, I’ve yet to see that ride in operation.

Sometime after 3 pm we decided to visit the water park section of the park which we never have done before. It was ok. The lockers are ridiculous – $10 (but they refund you $4 when you return the key) and super small. It would have cost us $24 just in locker fees so we decided Joe and I would keep watch over the stuff on the beach while the other three went on some stuff and then we could switch off. Except they disappeared for over an hour before returning. I’m not going to lie – I was a bit annoyed because the water park closes at 6 pm and I wanted to make sure we had some time to enjoy ourselves too. Brother #1 agreed to watch our stuff while E and his girlfriend took off and Joe and I went on the Big Flush (a two-person water slide with a raft) which was a lot of fun. If the line wasn’t so long I would have gone on a second time. We also rode the Action River although the water wasn’t moving very much to be deemed a river. Plus it was a bit too shallow for my taste. The beach itself was nasty and dirty which was weird to me because I swear they used to filter the water. In any case, it was fun but I think next time what we’ll do is hit the water park earlier since by the time we arrived there weren’t any chairs left (even though there was plenty of room for them). Or we’ll rent a cabana. In any case then we can just use one locker for our valuables and we can all head out together to enjoy the water.

After changing back into our street clothes Brother #1 decided he wanted to visit the haunted house. No one was really into going, plus it’s a separate $3 fee, so I went with him. Two women visiting from California were the only other people in our group and I made my brother lead the way through the twists and turns in the dark castle since it was his idea. One of the women held onto the back of my shirt the whole time. It was rather lame save for the one part where you end up in a room full of doors trying to find the one that isn’t a dead-end. Ugh! I didn’t care for that or the part where the corridor becomes extremely narrow and it’s so dark you can’t see. It hasn’t changed much from when we were kids which on one hand is lame but on another made it less scary for me since I hate haunted houses anyway.

We ended up leaving around 9 pm their time which was the longest we’ve ever spent there for a day trip. I was dreading it after reading all the negative reviews on Yelp about how run-down it has become, but it didn’t seem too bad – I could tell they spruced up some areas up with a fresh coat of paint so if anything, it looked better than last year. There were still a lot of rides with multiple broken down vehicles which made the lines longer but it wasn’t very crowded all day so it was tolerable. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how long we stayed and how much fun I had.

Pre-Memorial Day Celebrations

Yesterday we went over to my parents for dinner and games. It was rainy so no outdoor activities were had. My mom had mostly Chinese food, so I brought my homemade fried rice and some pot-stickers we had picked up from Costco earlier that day. I wasn’t sure if we’d like them since they were made with chicken and not a brand we had ever tried before, but they came out awesome. And the bag is huge and resealable, so we’ll be enjoying more for some time to come.

No one except Joe and I wanted to play Taboo, so we played Aggravation and then Cards Against Humanity. Joe ordered a big box of blank playing cards and made up some new questions and answers which helped to keep the game fresh, although truth be told, I’m getting kind of sick of the game. I think I’ll leave it at home next time we visit.

4-Day Weekend & Game Night

Another fantastic weekend is over. So sad! Joe took Friday and Monday off work so we got to spend four days together which was nice.

Friday we did some shopping, including a trip to Costco. Joe got ice cream at their cafe.

Cosco Ice Cream

I got some much-needed beauty accessories at Target.

Makeup Accessories

The elf brush on the left was only $3, the set in the middle was $7 and included a case, and the latex blending tool on the right was $5. The Caboodles organizer at the top was $8.99 and there was an offer in iBotta or one of those rebate apps so I got $1 back (which was a pleasant surprise as I check the apps after I buy stuff, not before).

Here’s what it looked like after adding my most-used makeup (which is almost all of it since I don’t own that much).

Organized Makeup

I also grabbed some Maybelline foundation from Walmart that came highly recommended by the girls whose YouTube makeup videos I watch.

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation

I’m not so sure I like it, though. I feel like my years-old Covergirl foundation looks better. Confession – I’ve been using it even though it’s super old. Other than a couple of little dried up pieces that fell in, it seems fine. I think it changed color as it’s pinker than most foundations in the store, but I like that because my face looks less washed out. Soooo… I guess buy foundation and let it sit for a few years for the perfect skin tone? Ha!

We also hit Savers since I had a 40% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket. Joe got a t-shirt and I got this cute Clinic makeup bag for $1.80. You could tell it had never been used because the inside is white and had no marks on it. It’s the perfect size to hold a bunch of stuff in my purse. I ended up combining three smaller makeup bags into this larger one.

I also bought this dress. I’m not even sure what occasion I’ll wear it but I wanted to get a dress and it was only $7.80 with my coupon.

New Dress

Saturday we had some people over for game night. This is the same group of friends we hang out with around 4th of July every year when one of them has a party. We met at a restaurant first and then came back to our place around 7 pm and played Uno Attack and Cards Against Humanity. One couple had to leave before we started playing games because they weren’t feeling well but our other friends stayed until 2 am. We had a blast, and had way more food than anyone could eat. Our friends all brought stuff and refused to take any home with them so we have a bunch of veggies, fresh fruit, and cookies. Joe had also made his signature italian stuffed jalapenos which came out sooooo good. Here’s a shot of the leftover ones we snacked on today.

Italian Stuffed Jalapenos

Joe also made strawberry martguerita jello shots. OMG, they were amazing! You couldn’t even taste the alcohol. There wasn’t much in them either since I felt no effects from consuming so many. Sorry there’s no picture of them – we gobbled them up way too fast. We will definitely be making those again!

It was a great time and everyone agreed we need to get together more often which is funny because other than the annual party, the only time we get together is if I organize it. I guess I just need to accept the fact that I’m the outing organizer and come up with some ideas. I’m thinking maybe a BBQ at our place in May so I can set up the Bears bags and badminton set.

On Sunday we slept in and just did nothing. We didn’t have much to clean up after the party and the rest of the house is still clean after spending Friday and Saturday prepping it for our company.

Today we decided to go out for an early lunch and run some errands, including buying a bunch of food for the backyard birds.

Bird Food

Bonus – the rats will enjoy the mealworms too.

Fun Weekend

Last weekend we went to the movies to see Hot Tub Time Machine 2 which was just ok. This weekend it was Kingsman: The Secret Service. What’s funny is how I’m always looking more forward to seeing the comedy but it’s the action film I end up liking. I hadn’t even heard of the Kingsman movie before but Joe and E wanted to see it and I’m glad we did. It had some really cool fighting scenes and the music was awesome. Once the library gets the soundtrack I plan on borrowing it.

Saturday evening we went over to my parents’ for dinner and to play Apples to Apples.

Apples to Apples

Brother # 1 and I agreed later on that it doesn’t hold a candle to Cards Against Humanity. Maybe if I had never played the latter before I would have enjoyed Apples to Apples more but I felt like it was pretty weak in comparison. But I really don’t want to play Cards Against Humanity with E. Brother # 1 was trying to make a case since E is now 17 and has probably played the game before with his friends but it still would make me uncomfortable. Even though he’s not my kid biologically, I still see him as a child I need to protect. Plus Brother # 1 takes vulgarity to a whole ‘nother level and often lacks a filter. I don’t want E to be fully exposed to that at his age. Maybe when he’s 21 or something, haha.

It was a fun night, though, and we left around 11 pm. With the hour drive home and the time change for Daylight Savings we didn’t get to bed until 1 am. Yikes! As a result we only got about five hours of sleep so Sunday after we did some grocery shopping we just relaxed and watched tv the rest of the day.

Today I decided to try a new crockpot recipe and am making stuffed cabbage. I’ll link to it later if it comes out good.

Valentine’s Day & Games

Joe and I agreed that we weren’t going to exchange gifts for Valentine’s Day this year and instead just have a nice dinner at our favorite Vietnamese place. We changed those plans slightly when my mom asked if we wanted to come over to hang out and play games. So we just got the food earlier. Plus Joe totally broke the pact – this was waiting for me when I walked downstairs Saturday morning.

Valentine's Day gift

I’m not sure what to do with the suckers since I’m more of a chocolate candy person, but they are very cute! And the Russell Stover dark chocolate & marshmallow heart that was included in my gift basket was actually very tasty. I’m not a huge fan of Russell Stover chocolates so I was pleasantly surprised.

Joe also sent me these two ecards. LOL!

Ecard2

Of course, I didn’t keep our pact either and ordered a cute lady-bug Valentine cookie for Joe from Cheryl’s but it was never delivered! I just got off the phone with them and I’m getting a refund. I don’t trust that the replacement will get here either since it started out with UPS and then disappeared once it was transferred to the post office over a week ago. Our asshole mailman probably ate it. ;)

Anyway, after a visit to Costco that was intended just for me to check out their optical department, but ended with us spending $32 on four items (which we had to haul around because we didn’t bother grabbing a cart), and a stop at two pet stores in search of a larger affordable rat cage (which was a bust), we relaxed at home for a bit before heading over to my parents.

When we first arrived we worked on transferring all their files from their old computer to their new one. We tried doing it the last time we were over but Microsoft OneDrive sucks. I had uploaded a zip file to my account but it kept failing when I tried to download it. And until the other day we both had completely forgotten that Joe has an external portable hard drive (and I just remembered today that I have two external hard drives – doh!). So we transferred the files there and then it took mere minutes to get them on the new machine. Derp!

We had no luck getting their old ink jet printer to work, though. The drivers are too old for Windows 7 and my parents refuse to get a laser printer even though it’s so much more economical for the majority of the population who merely prints forms and coupons. Ink jets make about zero sense to own unless you want to print photos and/or color documents (although even for the latter I’d suggest a color laser printer).

My mom gave us some Valentine chocolates, and Brother # 1 gave me a belated birthday present (the Dove chocolates pictured). I tried that extra dark bar last night and it is way too bitter for me! I guess I don’t like daaaaark chocolate, just semi-dark.

Chocolates

I hadn’t intended on us staying at their house past midnight, but we brought along Cards Against Humanity, which we had ordered online a few weeks ago and hadn’t played yet. Holy crap is that game fun! Brother # 1 in particular just loved it (Brother # 2 was out with his girlfriend so it was just Joe, me, my parents, and one brother). We played for hours!

We also ordered Apples to Apples the other day and it was delivered on Sunday (and the Post Office wonders why they are going bankrupt). We plan to play that with E since Cards Against Humanity is way inappropriate (although based on a few things he has said it sounds like he’s played it before with his friends. Oh boy would his mom be horrified if she knew that).

Incidentally, I updated my Excel list of games we own the other day and we have no less than 50 non-video games, including a handful we haven’t even played yet – Boom-O, Bunco, Friends Trivia (a card game), Mad Gab, Scene It Deluxe, and Scattergories. I think it’s safe to say we’re a bit addicted to games in this house. But I’m sure we’ll play them eventually – they are much more fun that video games in my opinion. I really need to host another game night soon!
