Young Guns

Over the weekend I was going through our DVD collection, pulling out movies I wanted to get rid of to make room for the new stuff we acquired recently, when I came across the copy of Young Guns that Joe bought at Walmart two years ago. I held it up and said, “Hey, we never watched this. We should”. Joe eyed me suspiciously and replied, “Oh, I see. Now you want to watch it. Oh that’s right, Kiefer is in it. Before you had no interest in it”. Yea, you got me, Joe, I needed my fix. Actually, after getting into 24 I just have more interest in Kiefer’s acting. It’s like when you find a band you like and start listening to anything by them you can get your hands on. A minor addiction, if you will, that will eventually be replaced by the next latest and greatest thing.

So we watched the movie tonight and it wasn’t half bad. Not necessarily something I’d watch again, but it was interesting in the parts where Kiefer had to yell because then he sounded just like Jack. His normal voice wasn’t quite as raspy as it is now. I guess it took awhile for all his smoking to catch up with him. His hair was too long and he was very young when that movie was made. I much prefer the Kiefer of today than yesterday, except his yellow teeth. He should really get them whitened.

Why is it that most guys are better looking as they get older? 35-40 is such a sweet spot for men if you ask me. Joe is 37 and is quite handsome. Sure, he was attractive in his 20’s (I’m basing this on photos I’ve seen since he was in his thirties when we met), but he is so much more distinguished now. Too bad it doesn’t work that way with women. We deal with PMS, menstrual cycles, giving birth, stretch marks, raising kids, and are all washed up by the time we hit 35. Totally not fair.

Stranger Than Fiction

We went to see Stranger Than Fiction today but Let’s Go To Prison started playing instead.

Thinking maybe we somehow went into the wrong theater, Joe left to find out what was going on. It took management a bit to turn off the film, so while I waited for Joe to return, I started getting into it. I like the line, “if I had a nickel for every time I’ve been incarcerated, I’d have fifteen cents”. LOL!

Eventually Joe came back along with an employee who said we had to switch auditoriums. As we left, however, one employee was talking to another employee on her walkie talkie. He was saying they were going to start the movie we wanted to see shortly. However, no one could seem to get straight which theater it would be playing in, particularly because instead of having the guy confirm the theater number, the girl kept asking him, “so does everyone have to switch auditoriums or not?” Considering he wasn’t right there, he probably wasn’t sure what auditorium we were in to begin with! At that point Joe looked around and remarked, “I can picture the Benny Hill music playing” and one lady laughed in response.

Eventually we ended up back in the original auditorium and the correct movie started five minutes later. The film was quite good, by the way. Will Ferrell continues to amaze me with his talent. Not many “goofy” actors could pull off the role with the believability that he did. And while the movie wasn’t a comedy per se, it was very entertaining and endearing.

Just a couple of movies I’ve seen recently with brief commentary. Movie reviewer I am not.

The Lake House – I had been wanting to see this one forever. Thank goodness I didn’t waste the money. It was slow and mostly boring with the typical sappy ending.

The Breakup – This was better because they went against the mold and didn’t give you that happy go lucky ending most audiences look for. Was it just me or were you expecting a woman to come out of the store at the end? The alternate ending on the DVD is worse than the original; thank god they didn’t use it.

The Island – Interesting concept not executed very well. Hate to say it, but had you thrown in Tom Cruise and a better producer, this could have been really good. It was just lackluster, although Scarlett Johansson looked better than I’ve ever seen her. I don’t buy that most beautiful woman crap. She’s good looking, but not all that and a bag of chips.

The Amityville Horror – We stumbled upon this movie on cable one night. It was ok but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it although it was interesting seeing Ryan Reynolds in a series role.

Just Like Heaven – First off, how dare they wait until the credits to play The Cure song! That being said, this was more interesting than either of us expected. I love Reese Witherspoon; she is so cute! So sad she’s getting divorced, but I saw it coming years ago. Mark Ruffalo is adorable too. He was even better in 13 going on 30, however.

We still haven’t seen Employee of the Month and for some reason it’s been at the theatre for a month now which is highly unusual. Every time we plan on going, we end up doing something else we figure is going to be more fun. We have two free tickets burning a hole in my wallet, though, so maybe we’ll see it this weekend. I’m so pissed at Dane Cook for turning his HBO Special into a one-night only “movie” just so you can see the 40 minutes of un-aired comedy. What bullcrap! Tickets are $12 per person. Greedy little … grrrrr.

Scarecrow Festival

After all the anticipation, I decided not to go see Employee of the Month, starring Dane Cook, today. I just lost the enthusiasm after watching a half hour special on it . I could be way off base, but it doesn’t look all that funny. Also, Jessica Simpson can’t act. She is another Neve Campbell: she plays the same character in all her roles. I just wasn’t in the mood for it. I’m not saying I won’t end up seeing it at some point, but I’m in no hurry.

Besides, it was way too nice outside to spend it inside a theatre, so we went to St. Charles’ Scarecrow Festival. It was fantastic, other than the parking situation, although we did luck out with a space nearby when we saw someone pulling out. Overall the fest was so much better than the Schaumburg one last month. The craft booths alone were great; I got a lot of cool bracelet ideas since half the booths were selling homemade jewelry.

After browsing the crafts, we sat by Fox River and munched on cheese fries for me, and a corn dog and fries for Joe, soaking up the sun and just enjoying the day. This fest is definitely one that we’ll be returning to in the future.

King vs Coben

Speaking of the DVR … we had Constantine on there since April 9th! I couldn’t believe it had been waiting for us to watch it that long. I almost deleted it a few times since it was taking up so much space, but then my friend said it was good so we watched it, and she was right. A little confusing, but interesting throughout the entire film which is what matters most.

We also watched two episodes of Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It’s an eight episode series adapted from Stephen King’s book of short stories of the same name. So far I’m not impressed. The only one I really felt was worth my time was the first one, Battleground. A hitman kills a guy who owns a toy factory and the next day receives a package from said toy factory containing toy soldiers who come to life and try to kill him. The effects of the army men when the camera got down on their level was cool. I think they used real actors painted green for those shots but I’m not sure.

There’s also a Stephen King made for tv movie called Desperation on there too that Joe recorded. I think I am over Stephen King. I liked his older stuff but haven’t enjoyed any of his books from the past 10 years now.

The author I’m really into now is Harlan Coben. I don’t think this guy can write a bad book. I’ve read four now and they are always so good! The general story lines are the same – someone is hiding a big secret from their family member, friends and family get into trouble, disappear, or are killed, etc. There are more twists and turns than you know what to do with, right up to the very last page of each book. I end up reading a book in two or three days because I just can’t put it down. I’ve been up past midnight a few nights already which I haven’t done for so long. Probably not since I was into Stephen King’s older work. I think Coben’s books would make good movies depending on the director.
