The Weekend

Joe’s flight back from Pittsburgh came in early Saturday morning, so when he got home we ran to Walmart and Target to get some shopping done. Later that afternoon we went back out to Home Depot for furnace filters, Meijer for some produce, and Red Robin for lunch. It was renovated fairly recently (sometime between now and August). It seemed a little more cramped than before, but overall it looks great. It was also super busy. They have an online reservation system so when you check in you can walk around the mall and they will text you when your table is ready. You can also keep track of your place in line via a web URL they text you when you first check in. This would be very cool, if they had not removed our names from the list without seating us! Luckily we happened to be right there when I noticed they were seating a party of 4 that had been behind us in line and that my name had disappeared from the list. I asked the hostess what was going on and she put us back on the list but not before another two more people were seated ahead of us. She also didn’t offer any apologies. Not cool, Red Robin! I understand mistakes happen, but an apology would have been nice. Luckily the rest of our visit was nice and their burgers, as always, were delicious. I’m hooked on the Banzai one.

Sunday we did nothing. We didn’t even leave the house. Well, technically Joe did to run to Aldi to get some pork sausage for breakfast since he was having a craving. We just watched TV all frickin day! It was good, but I also felt kinda crappy not getting anything accomplished. Of course, I more than made up for it today by cleaning the house and making some Hawaiian fried rice (best rice ever; I use SPAM instead of ham, though).

Thanksgiving & Black Friday

My Black Friday philosophy is simple – if I can’t buy it online, I’m not getting it.

I happened to wake up this morning just after 6 am so I logged onto Target.com and ordered $300 of Target gift cards for only $270.00. Some will be used as gifts but the majority will be used to pay for groceries and whatnot. I could have sworn the ad said all boots were buy one get one 50% off but the style I wanted weren’t on sale so I didn’t bother.

I did play Macy’s instant win game and won $10 though! And I checked Amazon’s prices on the gifts I bought Joe (already wrapped, I am on fire!) and found one item had dropped in price so I chatted with customer service and got a refund for the difference.

We did actually leave the house in the afternoon to visit the library and Joe and E headed to Target to grab some eggs and milk while I stayed at home with a monster bellyache. I really didn’t stuff myself last night so I’m not sure what didn’t agree with me (maybe the can of Pepsi I drank since I drink water 99.9% of the time?) but luckily I was feeling better by the time dinner rolled around (skipped lunch) and was able to eat two turkey sandwiches. They are so much better than warm turkey imho.

Last night was fun, as always. Brother #2’s girlfriend was in attendance and we ended up playing Buzzword and Taboo (E’s favorite). Somehow I lost track of time after dinner around 6 pm and more than four hours went by in a flash. We ended up leaving around 10:30 pm.

One thing – I’m getting a little tired of my mom commenting on how competitive I supposedly am. Sure, I want to win (who doesn’t?) but it’s not like I have a fit when I lose. I just want her to stop making commentary during game play when she should be asking the questions on the card so we can earn points before our round is over. I don’t think that’s unreasonable. Joe feels the same way but doesn’t say anything so I get attacked because I get frustrated and request she stay on point. Needless to say my team lost because she was on it.

I just feel like she is always attacking my personality with the little comments she makes. Why I continued to get hurt and annoyed by it I don’t know. It just makes me miss my grandparents even more because I always felt good enough in their presence.

Sorry for the negative turn that took. It’s just (unfortunately) true. It’s not like I’m the only one she does this to, though, so I guess there’s that?

In any case, I’m thankful for my family even if they can drive me a bit nuts and be thoughtless at times. And most of all I’m thankful for Joe and his unconditional love and support.

Polish Food & Heros

Saturday evening we met my cousin and her longtime boyfriend at a polish buffet, Warsaw Inn, that my family used to frequent when I was younger. The last time Joe and I had been there was when my youngest brother graduated high school ten years ago. The place hasn’t changed a bit. It got packed quite quickly, but we took our time trying out different foods and just chatting for about two hours. It was really nice because we’ve never really hung out with either of them outside of holiday gatherings or funerals. Now they want to meet up again soon to visit Ruth’s Chris steakhouse. I hear it’s pricey but I’ve been wanting to try it out and Discover card offers a gift card with our cash back rewards so that will make their crazy prices easier to swallow.

After dinner Joe and I went to my parents’ house to visit. We played some board games, and despite making fun of it, I tried a slice of Little Caesars’ Soft Pretzel Crust Pepperoni Pizza that my mom and Brother # 1 had brought back to the house. And it was so good I had a second slice. I guess I was totally wrong judging that pizza before trying it because as disgusting as it looked on the commercials I keep seeing, it was quite tasty.

Sunday morning we headed to an early matinee of Big Hero 6. Lately my favorite movies are animated and this one gets a 5-star rating from me. Stay until after the credits for a bonus scene!

Halloween Traditions

This weekend included a few of our Halloween traditions, just the two of us, because E decided that he would rather stay home so that he could go on a date with his new girlfriend. I was rather bummed because this was the first year since we started our Halloween traditions with the kids that we had no kids with us. I contemplated canceling everything but decided that would only make me feel worse.

Saturday morning we decided to head over to DeKalb to attend Northwestern University’s STEMfest. It wasn’t quite what I was anticipating, because it was geared mostly towards children, but it was still something different to do, and best of all it was free.

We scoured Yelp looking for somewhere to eat lunch in Dekalb but nothing seemed appealing so we headed towards home. We ended up stopping in St. Charles at a place I had bookmarked called Beef Shack. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive because the only beef sandwiches I’ve ever liked are at Portillo’s. Luckily this place alleviated my fears – their beef sandwich was, dare I say it, better than Portillo’s! Not only was the French bread less chewy, the beef wasn’t fatty at all, and the amount of melted mozzarella cheese was perfect. I couldn’t finish my sandwich and it was even better cold the next day.

After lunch we headed over to Sonny Acres to grab some apple cider donuts. The weather was overcast and cold so we made a quick walk around the grounds just to see what they were offering this season and then we got a dozen donuts and left. We ended up eating the donuts when we got home and let me tell you, they were the best apple cider donuts I’ve ever had – incredibly moist and very flavorful. It’s a good thing they don’t sell them year round or I’d gain a ton of weight. Between the two of us we polished off the entire dozen before Tuesday!

Saturday evening we decided to take the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes tour in St. Charles. There were 13 total houses participating in the contest, but based on previous years’ notes we skipped a handful of them because they are/were lame.

Our first stop was this house on a dead-end street. They turn their lawn into a graveyard and have live actors walking about. There’s this one young girl who creeps me out. This year they had fenced in the graveyard and turned their lawn into a mini haunted house. I was a chicken and didn’t go and now I wish I had. Oh well, maybe next year!

The second house we visited is one where they carve a shit ton of pumpkins and put them all around their lawn. They always come out so nice!

At this one house we visit every year they have live actors that follow you around the house, and beyond, to try and creep you out. This one guy always follows me! I even tried to get a selfie with him one year. This year he followed me when we first got there and when we went back to the car to leave. He loves me for some reason, LOL!

I was disappointed to learn that one of our favorite homes didn’t participate this year. I hadn’t even thought about checking if they were on the list; I just automatically assumed they were and was shocked when we arrived at the house and it wasn’t decorated at all. I guess they got tired of all the effort.

On our way to the tour we decided to stop at Dunkin’ Donuts to grab some hot chocolate. I had scoured their menu online beforehand to see if they were still offering the dark hot chocolate that I had tried about two years ago that I really liked. Unfortunately they only offer regular hot chocolate, salted caramel and mint flavors. I decided to opt for the latter, but when we went through the drive-through the woman working it claimed they only had the regular flavor. Joe and I decided to get to regular small hot chocolates, but were bummed that they didn’t have the other flavors. And based on the way the woman answered us when we asked her what flavors were available, I’m still not sure if she was mistaken or if that particular location just doesn’t offer the same menu. Either way I will probably not stop at that one again.

Meadow Lake

Sunday morning we headed over to Morton Arboretum to take a look at their glass pumpkin patch. I love all the different colors of glass pumpkins that they offer, and if I had the money and space I’d probably buy a few, but the least expensive one I saw was $45. Plus I don’t know what I would really do with them when they weren’t on display since I’d be afraid to store them in the garage. But feel free to take a look at all the cool pictures I took!

After the Arboretum we headed to Walmart so that I could return two rugs and get different sizes. Then we went across the street to Target for groceries, but nothing on my list was on sale so all we ended up buying was unhealthy snacks (Doritos and Fritos).

We got home just in time for Joe to watch the Bears game and he made us both a plate of nachos since we were starving. The rest of the day was a lazy one and I had to bust butt on Monday to catch up on cleaning before my work week began.

I Wiied Like You Wouldn’t Believe

This past week was rather weird because Joe was in Texas for work from Tuesday morning through Friday night. I got a taste of what it would be like to be single and I gotta say, no thanks. I mean, I can handle taking care of myself and all that, but I missed Joe. And texting just doesn’t cut it. We talked a bit on the phone but the reception in his hotel room sucked. I could never do a long-distance relationship.

Friday I had a friend over for lunch. I made my awesome baked mac and cheese earlier that morning for the occasion. Then we went upstairs so she could see the rats. After that we played on the Wii until she had to leave just before 3 pm. Brother #2 was working in the area so he came over shortly after and we went out for tacos and then played on the Wii.

Joe’s plane was delayed two hours so he didn’t end up getting home until 11 pm. E’s band played at the high school football game that night and his mom was supposed to drop him off after, but she called me just after Joe’s flight home took off to say she’d be dropping him off in the morning instead. I texted her shortly after to get a time and she replied 10 am. Surprisingly, he walked through the door at 10:01 am. To say I was surprised is an understatement!

We went to the library Saturday afternoon and got Angry Birds Star Wars for the Wii which was a lot more fun than I anticipated. I think we played it for close to two hours. I played on the Wii more this weekend than I’ve played all year, hence the title of this entry.

After dinner Saturday we made a special trip out to Sonic only to learn their half price shakes promotion had ended. Joe and E still got shakes, and I got a lemonberry slush since I’m lactose intolerant, but none of the drinks were as good as the last time we went. The flavor was fine but the consistency was off. I guess they did us a favor as we won’t be as likely to visit again anytime soon ($9 for three drinks is rather high anyway).

Sunday morning we all stopped for breakfast at a place called Stacked (they have amazing banana bread french toast) before dropping E off at home. Joe and I hate going out for breakfast because the food is a ridiculous markup compared to lunch and dinner (when you think about how cheap eggs and bread are), but agreed that we shouldn’t get up in arms about it since we rarely go out for breakfast (McDonald’s being an exception). It was funny because E usually orders orange juice at breakfast but only wanted water. I have to wonder whether he did that because he knows Joe’s thoughts about orange juice prices (when they go to McDonald’s they will bring orange juice from home for E). The best part, however, is that as I opened my wallet to get out my credit card I spotted a gift card for $100 I had forgotten we had, so breakfast was actually free!
