How do you coffee junkies do it? If I drink a small Starbucks Frappuchino I get all jumpy, even nauseated, if I haven’t eaten enough beforehand. But I can drink diet Pepsi all day without a problem. Is there that much more caffeine in coffee compared to soft drinks? I didn’t think so, but it’s weird how each affects me differently. I actually bought a 4-pack of those bottled Frappuchinos at Walmart yesterday. I haven’t had any in a long time because they don’t compare to the real thing you get at Starbuck’s. But if you pour it over ice, it’s much better than straight from the bottle because otherwise it gets warm too quickly. Just a little tip from me to you. Hopefully I’ll stop bouncing off the walls before bedtime. ;)

I don’t drink coffee at all, but like you I did assume that coffee and cola have about the same amount of caffeine. Until this month when I read an article in Glamour magazine which showed how the amount of caffeine varies in different types of drinks, etc.
16oz Starbucks coffee: 259-564mg (according to a study. Starbucks says it’s only 260)
12oz Diet Coke: 47mg
1oz Dark Chocolate: 20mg
Iced Tea: 40-70mg
Extra Strength Excedrin (2): 130mg
(Glamour mag, October, page 186)
Now I understand why I can’t take Excedrin on an empty stomach… it gives me the shakes and makes me feel queasy, just as you described. Also, I always thought iced tea affected me more than diet coke, and now I know I wasn’t imagining it.
The problem is that pouring them over ice makes them water down too much. That’s why when I was a barista, we tried to talk people out of buying them and offered up the real thing as an alternative.
