Slacker.com is a free web-based radio service that learns what you like to listen to, allows you to customize the pre-built stations, and build your own stations. I created a station of my favorite artists – including The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Pinback, and more yesterday. I’ve yet to search for an artist and not have them there, including Neds Atomic Dustbin! Plus they have material spanning several albums, not just the singles. I heard an obscure Cure song the other day. Granted, it wasn’t one of my favorites, but the fact that it’s available is pretty damn cool. I’m looking forward to how they plan to offer satellite radio for the car. I imagine that won’t be free but it might be worth checking out instead of paying for another year of XM.
I told my boss about the site the other day and an hour later she proudly IM’d me that she had built a station. I asked, “Who did you add, Winger?” totally trying to be funny and she’s like, “Yea, and G’n’R, Poison, etc. etc.” “You’re killing me!” I exclaimed while I snickered. Our tastes in music couldn’t be more different.
Oh and how did I find this site? Thanks to my friend whom I’ve never met or spoken to directly. He’s a coworker of Joe’s who likes a lot of the same music as I so he’s always recommending music sites or artists and sending cds home with Joe for me to listen to. Isn’t that cool? I love that guy and I don’t even know what he looks like. :)
Thank you so much for recommending this website! I usually listen to Sirius at work (to drown out my annoying coworker) but I like this much better since I can customize it to my favorite artists.
