Home from Ohio

Even when we’re only gone a couple of days, I’m always happy to be back home. Our apartment smells new when we haven’t been here for awhile. What’s more, the Chicagoland weather is so lovely right now! We’ve got the patio door open to enjoy it. We got back an hour ago, so I’ll probably write about our trip later on.

Right now my monitor is acting funny. The screen keeps “jumping”. I updated the driver since Windows XP didn’t have the Sony one installed (though I swear I did that), but I still can’t figure out why it’s doing it. I thought maybe it was some electrical interference, but it’s hooked up to an UPS so it should be fine. *Sigh* That’s what I get for saying I didn’t miss my computer while we were gone. I guess I hurt someone’s feelings. ;)

Update: It must be some type of interference. I upgraded the monitor and video card drivers, plus tried a different monitor altogether and it’s still doing it. It’s also doing it (although not as drastically) on the tv and Joe’s monitor. I’ve been informed by ComEd that our management needs to investigate and management informed me it won’t be until Tuesday. I’m starting to dread holiday weekends because something always goes wrong. Memorial Day weekend the air conditioning wasn’t working and last 4th of July the air conditioning was making a horribly loud humming sound.

Photo-archiving

I decided to re-archive my digital photos. I came upon this conclusion for a few reasons:

1) I read that burning cds at a slower speed retains their integrity better.
2) I wanted a second copy to store in a safe place other than home in case of a fire.
3) I wanted to reduce the overall size of my archive.

That third one really kept me busy over the past few days. It amazes me how much crap, and I do mean CRAP, I kept. I’m not sure why I’d ever find it necessary to go back and look at photos that were out of focus or just plain ugly. I guess you can file that under “what was I thinking?” Today alone I deleted 600 photos. I still kept some stuff that while not technically appealing, provided some sweet memories, but the rest of the junk was deleted forever. Even after that, I have 11 gigs of photos dating back to October 2001. Yikes! I’m bad at math … how many 750 mb discs will that take up? *Grin*

Weekend Wrap-up

Today was another fantastic day. We contemplated seeing a movie, and finally decided on Freaky Friday. We both though it was pretty funny. I enjoyed it a lot … and I love Jamie Lee Curtis.

Afterwards we had lunch at Pepe’s. The service was good until right at the end. The waitress brought the check and I handed her my credit card because I was ready to go. Well, she wouldn’t take it because unlike other restaurants, apparently they don’t take your card until you fill out the gratuity line. Bah! And then she walked away even though it took me two seconds to fill it out. And so we waited. And waited some more. And then I started getting annoyed because one of my pet peeves is waiting forever just so I can pay. If you want my money, don’t make me wait, otherwise you tempt me to pull a dine and ditch. [Not that I would ever really do that]. Needless to say, I got tired of waiting and went up to where I could be seen with my bill and credit card in hand. The girl apologized because she could tell I was mad, and made some excuse about being short staffed. Like that is *my* problem. If she had just waited two seconds, things would have been fine. So I ignored her and didn’t say a word. What’s that saying? If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Better than me lecturing her, right? ;)

Late afternoon we went to Cosley Zoo to satisfy our photo-taking hunger. They had a bunch of new animals, including some raccoons and a coyote, so that was cool. I got some nice shots of this cute white duck too. He was talking to me the whole time. Really cute.
