Punks

I think I irked the local police today. Oh well, so be it.

When I got home from work after 6 pm (worked late) today, I was inside my car, cleaning the windows, while three 10-year-old boys rode around the parking lot on their bikes. I overheard them talking about “getting this car” or something. Then as they passed my car, single file, I popped my head up just as the last kid in the line threw something that bounced off the car next to me with a loud ping.

So I went inside and called the police.

Was I overreacting? Perhaps. But keep in mind that about a year and a half ago my car, as well as several others, were vandalized in the same parking lot and it cost over $400 out of my pocket to get my car repaired. So if I feel that some punk-ass kids are acting disrespectful around other people’s property, I’m going to try and stop it.

After talking to the kids, the officer came to my door and pretty much treated me in a condescending manner. He tried to make me feel bad for telling on kids that were, as he put it “just ten years old.” Um, wasn’t it a 10-year-old boy who shot his own father this month? Uh yea, it was. So don’t try to treat me like I’m being ridiculous.

The officer informed me that the boys claim they were throwing crabapples at one another and hit some cars “by mistake” and that they were sorry and wanted to apologize. One of the kids’ parents was outside as well. I told the officer just to tell them to be more careful. He asked me if I wanted him to string them up by their ankles and beat them. He was totally poking fun at me. You had to be there. It really pisses me off thinking about it. I just explained to him what had happened with the cars getting keyed in the past and that these kids needed to respect other people’s property. It starts out innocent now, but who knows in a few years.

If it was even ten years ago, I probably wouldn’t have done anything. But the world today is different, and when you read in the news about gangs of kids who jump people just for the “fun of it” and some of those kids are as young as 7-years-old, you don’t think of 10-year-old little shits as innocent kids anymore. A man was shoved into the street by a group of kids and now he’s dead. So I didn’t really appreciate the way that officer treated me.

I really can’t wait until we move and I can put my car in the garage and stop worrying about it all the time. Now I’m going to have to check it carefully tomorrow. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I worry those kids might do something to my car to get back at me. That’s the primary reason I didn’t go back outside to talk to their parents; I’m hoping they don’t think it was me that called the cops on them. And if they really were innocent and I misinterpreted the situation, at least now they might watch their actions more carefully.

Sunday Brunch: Weddings

1. Indoor or outdoor weddings? Outdoor.

2. How many weddings have you been in? None.

3. When you were married (or if there is a wedding in your future), what type of wedding did or would you have? I would like to get married on a beach or some nice place outdoors that is as private as can be considering it would be in public.

4. Have you caught the bouquet or garter? Nope.

5. Tell us about a funny, scary or memorable wedding moment. I’ve only been to one wedding and two receptions, so I don’t have any memories to share. Ask me again in about a year and I’ll tell you about my own wedding. :)

Here opossum, opossum

Joe’s Guide to Attracting Wildlife to Your Patio

1. While your fiancee is filling up the bird feeders, suggest to her that she put the bag of remaining food underneath the patio table instead of bringing it inside like she normally does.

2. Don’t check the patio for a few days.

3. When you do check, notice bag is now tipped over and full of holes from various birds and squirrels having their fill.

4. Still leave bag outside.

5. Find a baby opossum rummaging through the bag at night.

Sorry, no photos of the opossum; he ran off as soon as he realized we were watching him. Here’s the resulting mess, however. Joe is going to sweep it up tomorrow.

Update: He came back to eat more.

Week In Review

Thursday I spent the evening out with two former coworkers, one of which I haven’t seen in over a year. We met at her house to have dinner. She made us some yummy lasagna. Afterwards, I drove us all to the local mall (the same mall that will be MY local mall once we move) to do some ceramic painting. I made this for one of the bathrooms in our new place. I want to have an ocean theme. After painting, we went back to our friend’s place to have dessert. By the time I got home, it was after 10 pm and I was exhausted. I just cannot do the social thing on weeknights. Call me old, but it’s just too tiring.

Case in point, Friday Joe and I just hung out at home and did laundry. Saturday was more fun as we did some shopping. We bought a bunch of supplies for stripping the wallpaper in the new place, as well as for painting the walls. In addition, I picked up this awesome cd rack at The Container Store. It holds 360 cds and I was a bit shocked to see I own that many. I knew it was around 300, but I wasn’t aware it was over that. I like how it looks having all my cds in one place instead of spread between the bookshelf and the rotating cd holder I had before. It also frees up the bookcase for more dvd storage.

Today we did some more shopping and found the sectional we may be buying. I can’t decide, though, because I really liked the idea of a plum-colored couch, but this one is so comfy. It’s really cool – The left side reclines and the right side is a sleeper sofa, plus each side has a space to store remotes and one back cushion folds down for use as a drink holder. It’s on sale until mid-September, plus the place will hold it for free until we move so we can get the sale price, so we have time to think about it. I’m so indecisive about these things!

I feel like we’ve been spending money like water lately. It’s all being spent on things we need and were planning on buying anyway, but it feels weird to be spending so much in such a small time frame. We dropped over $150 at Walmart over the weekend with all the supplies, plus decorative items for the kids’ bathroom (I’m doing a rubber ducky theme). It’s so fun getting new things, though. I went to Micheal’s and got a very cute Harvest-themed welcome sign for our new front door as well as some notepads on clearance for my obsessive list-making. I still need to order some things online, not to mention we need bedroom furniture and a dining room table. Moving is expensive when you have more space than furniture. Not that I’m complaining. I need space; I’m suffocating over here!

Things

  • I have a huge headache and need some sleep. Bedtime is early tonight.
  • We’re moving on Oct 15th.
  • My doctor’s office worked wonders and my Discovercard was credited the $481 I paid for blood work I had done in January of this year. Feels like I won the lottery!
  • This one woman at my place of employment is RUDE. I was having lunch with a friend when one of her friends, completely uninvited, sat down at our table, interrupting me, and started talking about herself to the other girl like I wasn’t even there. Ten minutes later she left to have a cigarette. WTF?
  • I decided to buy the wire letter holder thing (see previous entry) because it matches our napkin holder, plus I found an online store that sells a matching paper towel holder and spice rack. Yes, this kind of stuff now excites me.
  • This stoup is delicious but be warned – unless you’re an expert chopper, it will take longer to prepare the ingredients for this meal than it says. Plus it forgets to mention what to do with the kidney beans (I put them in while adding the chicken stock).
