Wedding Bands

wedding bands We hadn’t planned on actually buying our wedding bands this afternoon, but it just worked out that way. We stopped at the Rogers & Hollands in the mall just to look. The ladies there are awesome, though, and while I wanted something simple, and wouldn’t have thought to even look at it, I ended up with a band that has diamonds in it. It looks really nice with my engagement ring (which I also got there last June) or by itself. Not only that, but we got a terrific deal on both bands.

We’re very pleased with the quality of merchandise they carry, not to mention the friendliness of the staff. It’s one of the few places where the sales people can sell you on something nicer than you’d probably originally go for without it feeling like they are trying to swindle you or discard your tastes. They knew from the beginning I wanted something small and they didn’t pressure me to go larger, which I appreciate. Plus they knew exactly what I’d like, unlike the guy (ugh, sorry, but guys just shouldn’t be selling jewelry) at Kay’s who seemed very unsure of himself. He was nice, but he didn’t seem very knowledgeable, their rings weren’t particularly attractive, and their prices were much higher. Furthermore, I didn’t see the kind of warranty that Rogers & Hollands offers. Not only that, but because we’re not getting married until October, the sales woman recommended we wait to have the rings sized. As she explained, only the initial sizing is free of charge, and since October is nine months away, if we had the rings sized now, we might need them resized again before we even start wearing them. She was extremely helpful and it made the whole experience a lot of fun.

My ring is mounted in 14k white gold with 11 round diamonds weighing 0.20tw and Joe’s ring is 14k white gold with a flat bevel.

These are the kinda shoes I like

20050128-001_t.jpg You know you’re feeling the effects of cabin fever when you start taking photos of your new shoes. Well, that and the fact that I’m itching to really use my new camera and haven’t had the proper opportunity. That being said, I’m surprised by how nicely the built-in flash works on this camera, especially considering you can’t change the output strength like I was able to with the Nikon. Also, I’ve been using the camera with the flash since I got it on Monday and I still have a full battery. How cool is that? I’m only going to have to buy one backup battery for vacation and I’ll be set for a whole day of shooting since I won’t be using flash that much anyway. I’m cheating on Nikon and loving every minute of it!

Anyway, I looove getting new gym shoes, or as some people call them, sneakers. I buy Avia exclusively now, not only because are they affordable ($27.99 for the ones pictured), but I never have a problem finding a comfortable pair. I can’t say the same for Nike.

Hmmmm … I just noticed a trend here … I no longer care so much for things that begin with N-i-k. Good thing I spell my name with a C. Yes, I’m a dork, although I prefer it if you say I’m quirky. ;)

It has arrived

My new camera arrived early this morning and I immediately started charging the battery. It was torture looking at that lovely box and being unable to do anything but skim the user manual during lunch. Luckily I was pretty busy all day so the time didn’t drag too much.

As soon as I got home I had Joe help me put the neck strap on the camera, then I popped in the battery and my old CF card (got a 1 GB Lexar on the way), attached the starter lens, and walked around the townhome taking photos while playing with various settings.

As is with all first days with a new camera, the shots I took were not very impressive, but it will take some time and patience to get familiarized with how Canon has their buttons, menu items, etc. laid out as opposed to Nikon which I’ve become accustomed to. I’ve already learned a lot about this gem and can’t wait to get outside to really see what this camera can do. Indoor shots just don’t do it for me, but here’s a few test shots, mostly using ISO 1600 as I’m not a big fan of the onboard flash.

It’s amazing to listen to the shutter do it’s thing (it’s actually quite loud since I’m not used to it!) and watch the camera react so much more quickly than my old camera. It’s also different having to use the eyepiece exclusively as the live image preview is gone. But it’s so worth it!

I hadn’t realized the aspect ratio of the Canon image files (3:2) differ from the Nikon (4:3) because it uses the same dimensions as standard 35mm film. Because of this, the need for cropping before printing has been eliminated, which is cool, but not something I had even thought about. Just another added bonus!

Here’s to hoping for some decent weather this weekend so I can visit a forest preserve or two.

Disney’s DTV Valentine

Am I the only who remembers this Disney special that originally aired on February 14, 1986? I know it has been replayed on The Disney Channel, but I don’t think it’s available on DVD which is a shame. I am not too embarrassed to admit I used to love watching it whenever it came on, and would watch it again if given the opportunity.

Looking for host suggestions

I’m looking at switching hosts for both my sites in a few months, and was wondering if any of you had one you’d like recommend. So far everything I’ve found online turned out to be shady operations with horrible support and poor reviews from current users. Here’s my main criteria, and please don’t recommend unless you’ve had personal experience with them. Thanks in advance!

$9.99/month or less
Running Linux
99.9% uptime guaranteed
Minimum 500 MB storage
Minimum 20 GB transfer
Minimum 2 domains
Minimum 5 subdomains
Minimum 5 email addresses
Minimum 1 FTP account per domain
Control panel
Perl, CGI, MySQL
SSH (secure shell) access (I know this doesn’t come standard due to security reasons, but many hosts will give it to you if you ask)

I think I remembered everything. I’m so high-maintenance. ;)
