Cranky

I’m feeling cranky for quite a few reasons, but the main one is that the middle finger on my right hand is infected and hurts like a bitch because it’s so swollen. It started feeling funny on Tuesday but yesterday was the worst, so I headed over to immediate care this morning. The doctor said it wasn’t infected enough to drain, so I was given an antibiotic prescription and directions to soak it three times a day. It is making typing very difficult and I keep smacking it into stuff which hurts. I won’t be able to put away all the Christmas decor today like I had planned and it’s going to be a challenge cleaning the rat cages which are already past due.

On top of that, all the crap I went through yesterday donating blood at the local library was for naught; thanks to the infection they won’t be able to use my blood. I nearly passed out during the process and the guy who took care of me bruised the hell out of my arm. Needless to say, I’m annoyed.

Christmas

Thursday morning we headed to the mall to catch an early matinee of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The theater wasn’t too crowded which was nice. We had watched all six previous films, in release order, leading up to Thursday so the saga was still fresh in our minds. Some people felt the movie was boring and predictable but I thought it was very interesting and I enjoyed all the new characters they introduced. I dare say it was my favorite of all seven episodes.

Before the movie we browsed Kohl’s for a bit and Joe ended up buying a pair of jeans and knitted cap. After a 15% discount and the $5 I earned from spending $100 before Christmas on a pair of shoes for Joe and some bras for myself, the total was only $21.

Christmas Eve was spent at my parents per usual. E was with us and Brother # 1 even got me presents this year! I’m so happy he put an effort into picking out something he thought I’d like too.

Christmas Gifts from Btother #1

Funny books, candy (Sour Patch Kids), and some fuzzy slippers for my perpetually cold feet. I got him a Funko Pop Olaf character and a $30 Netflix card for the whole family (even though I doubt my parents will really use it, but my brothers will more than make up for it). We also brought a couple of gifts for E to open (CDs). There was no crazy BINGO this year but my cousin stopped by with some yummy cookies and we all played a fun game of Aggravation.

By the time we dropped E back off at home and got settled down it was past 1 am, yet we were still up at 7 am on Christmas day. It was a very lazy one with just the two of us. I didn’t even cook since we had leftovers from the night before. My mom made the same Parmesan chicken recipe that I make but hers came out so much better. I think it was the mayo she used; it had olive oil in it which contributed to the flavor.

Here’s all the gifts Joe got me:

I actually insisted he open the Star Wars t-shirt on the right and the orange hat before Christmas so he could wear them to see the new movie.

Saturday E came over for our Christmas celebration. He arrived at noon and opened the rest of his presents.

E's Gifts

Not pictured: a 32″ Samsung Smart HDTV we gave him for his bedroom at home. We wanted to get him one last year but he kept mentioning that his grandma was talking about getting him one. We waited to make sure he hadn’t already gotten a new TV before bringing it downstairs. Funny thing is when he was opening his CDs he’d joke, “it’s a TV”, so when he started unwrapping the actual TV, he made the same joke, and then kinda gasped and exclaimed “it really IS a TV!” It was so funny; I wish I had recorded it.

We had bought a shank ham from Walmart this year and decided to cut it up and heat it in the crockpot. I still made a glaze which I poured over the pieces. It turned out so good! Very moist and flavorful. I think we’ll be doing it that way every year.

Christmas Eve Eve

Today was my company’s Christmas party. We worked until noon and headed to the local steakhouse for a nice lunch and grab bag. I decided to participate this year even though I’ve always had bad experiences with grab bags. Worst was when I was in the girl scouts, or possibly brownies since I was pretty young, and I made an effort to pick out a nice gift worth what the guidelines stated it should, and ended up with a cheap ass hollow chocolate santa. These things scar a person for life, people! Anyway…

They did the grab bag a little different this year where instead of taking the gift back to your table, you left it up front. And each gift could only be stolen twice instead of three times. It definitely sped things up, but it was harder to see what people were opening too.

This is the gift I brought:

Star Wars Grab Bag Gift

I thought it would be perfect timing with the new Star Wars movie out. Incidentally, I have not seen it yet, but plan to very soon. We have been watching all six of the previous movies the past few days to “prepare”.

This is what I ended up with:

Blackhawks Mugs

I originally chose to steal a game called Dirty Minds but that was stolen from me so I chose the Blackhawks mugs. I wasn’t about to unwrap a new gift and chance getting a bottle of booze since they dominate the grab bag. Granted, this year was better than last and we had more non alcoholic gifts which was nice.

Lunch was a nice juicy steak and I used my two drink tickets to try something new. Originally I ordered what is called a Southside but they didn’t have mint so I had a Tom Collins instead. It was quite tasty and made me feel good since I’m a lightweight when it comes to alcohol since I drink so infrequently! My second drink was a Kahlua and cream which was also good. I had to drink that one faster since things were already wrapping up by that time. Unlike last year where the party lasted four hours, this one was only two and a half. I was kinda bummed how quickly it passed by since I was having a good time. Many people went to a bar to keep the party going but I opted out. Figured I’d leave on a high and sober note. Haha!

In addition to the grab bag, the company gave everyone a portable battery to charge your devices on the go, and Christmas bonus checks.

I feel like I’m rolling in the dough lately between the money I made pet-sitting, the very generous check my mom gave us for Christmas, the money from Joe’s parents, and now the bonus. On top of that, when I came into work this morning there was a Christmas card from my boss with a $25 Amazon gift card inside. I wasn’t expecting that at all. He didn’t give us anything last year (not that I expected anything) so it was a pleasant surprise. I had to assure my coworker who is much younger than I that he shouldn’t feel guilty for not getting our boss anything since in business you’re supposed to gift down according to seniority, not up.

And now I’m off work until Tuesday. Let the relaxing begin!

Organize This!

I was very productive this morning. After grocery shopping I organized the bottom of our pantry where Joe keeps all the alcohol. Now I can actually close the door. Imagine that!

I also started a new recipe – chicken and rice soup – in the crock pot and then cut up some red peppers to store in the freezer. I couldn’t pass up the deal at Meijer (4 for $5) and I love having chopped peppers on hand for recipes. I also froze some chicken breasts. Now I just need to find a better way to store all the food in my freezer since it doesn’t stack very well and drives me nuts. I’m thinking about getting some clear storage bins like in this photo for both the freezer and refrigerator. I haven’t in the past simply because they aren’t exactly cheap, but I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I’m willing to spend money if it gives me joy and/or peace of mind, and I derive much joy when things are organized. Let the shopping begin!
