Gifts & Hurricanes

One more day of work and we’re on our way to sunny Hurricane-threatened Florida! It looks like Hurricane Wilma is threatening our wedding, but we won’t know for sure until Friday or Saturday. I’m not so worried about the wedding as our officiant said we could reschedule to Tuesday the 25th (our originally chosen date, coincidentally), but I am worried about what we’re going to do regarding the hotel on the Gulf we have booked for two nights. The booking is fully non-refundable and since we were staying there for the wedding night, we chose a nice $200/night place. Eeek! I guess losing $400 is nothing compared to putting ourselves in harm’s way, but it still kinda sucks.

Speaking of wedding stuff, Joe and I each received a wedding gift from people we work with today. In fact, people had been asking Joe if we were registered anywhere, but we didn’t bother since we weren’t having a big wedding and all that. It didn’t seem right to me to expect gifts. Anyway, Joe’s Director, who also used to be my former boss (NOT the boss from hell, though) gave us a very generous check. I was rather shocked. I know she knows us both, but we aren’t very close, so I was surprised.

Then a guy I work with bought me this awesome photography book. It was rather funny because I was at my desk when he handed it to me. He mentioned how he thought about buying me some books that he likes to read but he didn’t think I’d like them (he’s correct because he likes reading about world history). But the funny thing was how he had put the receipt in the book and said if I didn’t like the book I could take it back for something else. Then he said he had thought about writing something inside the book, but didn’t want to in case I took it back. I handed him back the book and told him to go ahead and write what he wanted and to take the receipt because I had no intentions of returning the book. I didn’t even look at the receipt either; it just didn’t seem right. It just floored me how thoughtful he is. I think he may have felt a little guilty because he had been talking about baking me a nice wedding cake (he used to be a professional pastry chef) but he hasn’t had time as his last day with the company is Friday. He started with us in May, but he found a better job closer to home. He is a very nice guy, and while I often teased him and called him a dork, it was always in fun. He was the only guy in our department so we’ll be back to all women.

Oh that reminds me. After over a year of several of us begging and pleading, not to mention more than a few Administrative Assistants being hired and then leaving, the company has decided to offer someone I refer to as Mrs. Wonderful her old job back and she said yes! I can’t believe it! I am so happy because the filing system has been a disaster ever since she left. Her first day is Monday so I won’t seeing her until I get back but I am so excited!

I should get to bed now. Unlike Joe, I don’t have tomorrow off. Things are super hectic at work and tomorrow is going to be another crazy day. Monday I worked from 7-4:30 with no breaks or lunch!!! I have to tie up some loose ends and show my coworkers some of what I do so things don’t get behind while I am gone. I so need this vacation!

Wedding planning progress

Well, we’re definitely making headway in the wedding planning department. There are a total of three hotels we’ll be staying at during our trip and I’ve booked two of them.

I also booked our Discovery Cove adventure only to learn that a 7-day pass to SeaWorld is included in the price! We have SeaWorld Busch Gardens combo passes, and after seeing that Busch Gardens is mostly rollercoasters, I don’t even want to go there that much. So we’re going to try and sell the passes on Ebay. I hope we can get what we paid for; that’s all I want. I reserved some Ebay books from the library to get some tips. I’ve only sold something twice on there before; the first time the person sent me a bad check after I had already sent the merchandise (the bank’s fault for saying the check was good when it wasn’t) and the second time no one placed a bid. So obviously I suck at Ebay.

I also contacted an officiant for the Gulf coast area to see about marrying us and asked her for suggestions on photographers and videographers in the area. Personally, I couldn’t care less if there was a video, but I my mom will kill me if she can’t see us getting married. Mothers!

Since our trip is now exactly three months away, we’re starting to get super excited about it. Even more so than when we went to Arizona and California a few years ago. It’s been so long since I’ve been to Disney. I hope it is as magical as I remember it.

Tickets

Holy crap, I just ordered $993 worth of theme park tickets for our trip to Florida! If I look at that number long enough, it kinda makes me want to throw up. The Disney park tickets alone cost $680, but that’s because we got the 10-day passes with Park Hopping and No Expiration. Since we’ll probably only use 5 days at most, when we go back eventually we won’t have to buy any tickets which will make the next vacation seem cheap. Sweet! The remaining money went toward tickets to Sea World, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardens. Yea, we are going to be doing a lot besides getting married. And as the days go by, I’m starting to get more and more excited about everything.

Our trip to Saint Louis

Nothing like returning to a cold apartment and broken heat (although that is being worked on as I write this) after a so-so getaway. I wasn’t expecting St. Louis to be this totally cool place, but there were more than a few things that bugged me, so if you think I’m being overly negative, well so be it.

We left yesterday morning at 6 am and arrived in St. Louis at 10:30 am. We got stuck in a bit of traffic as we got into the city, but it wasn’t too bad. Since check-in time at the hotel was many hours away, we headed straight to the zoo. Not being familiar with the area, we opted to pay the $8 parking fee instead of looking around for street parking. The thing that irked me, however, was what little thought these people put into their parking lot/paying set up. Check out this photo and not tell me that is the stupidest thing you’ve ever seen. In case it’s hard to tell, the booths where you have to pay are immediately off the road that runs along the front of the zoo. Which means you have gobs of traffic backed up in either direction while each person stops and pays. And god forbid they have all three booths in operation … no, that would make sense. What they should have done was put that entrance to the lot at the beginning, instead of the middle, and have the drive wrap along the outer portion of the lot so that cars would clear the street while waiting. This is what they do at Milwaukee Zoo.

Maine

We were discussing where we’d like to vacation this year, and Joe came up with Maine. It never would have crossed my mind, but the more I learn about the state, the more inviting it seems. We’ve seen the Pacific Ocean, so it would be nice to visit the Atlantic. Plus, the lighthouses are picturesque, and there’s the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, puffins and seals in their natural environment. That’s just awesome. I think we’re going to nix our original plans to visit Colorado this year and do Maine instead. Now if we could just decide on what region to visit. If you’ve been to Maine, your suggestions would be helpful. We definitely want to stay on the coast, but we’re not sure which one would offer a good mix of lighthouses and wildlife.

Maybe we’ll even visit Stephen King’s favorite town, Bangor, while we’re at it. ;)
