Shiny Remote

20040928-remote_t.jpg This new cable box remote Joe picked up from his office is really nice. It’s shaped nicer, and lighter too. Plus it has a neat feature where you can have it turn on/off the tv and box at the same time. Despite someone on a forum complaining how sometimes it doesn’t turn off both devices, I haven’t had a problem with it. As long as you hold down the button a little longer, it gets both devices. The complainer is just that, a complainer, especially when he gets all melodramatic about his tv being on all day long and it possibly getting ruined. Ok, drama queen. Let’s blame the remote for the fact that you can’t tell when your tv is still on. Don’t most tvs have a light on front to show the power is on? All the ones I own do.

The only thing I don’t like about the remote so far is that after programming my vcr into the aux button, the all on/off button turns the vcr on as well. As I don’t use the vcr very often, it’s annoying. I don’t want to take the programming off, however, because it’s nice to use the remote for all the devices. I checked the user guide, and while I think the special on/off button should only control the tv and cable box, it’s not set up that way. Someone clearly wasn’t thinking when they designed the feature.

As my luck would have it

How ironic is it that for months I’ve been telnetting into a local BBS to chat and would have to choose between chatting or watching House Hunters as Joe was using the tv on Thursday nights, yet now that I have the latop, not only is everyone MIA on the BBS, but House Hunters is a repeat. Grrrr.

Surfing from bed

I’m trying to get used to the keyboard on the laptop which has been interesting. I’m not the best typist to begin with, and the backspace key isn’t quite in the same position as on my regular keyboard. Also, the delete and insert keys are in a totally different spot. But the hardest thing to get used to is the monitor display. It’s odd how at different angles the brightness and clarity change. I also noticed it’s harder on my eyes to view the screen in the dark whereas my regular desktop monitor doesn’t bother me. Oh well, I’m sure it’s just a matter of getting used to it. It sure is nice to surf from bed, though. :)

New Toy

Our new toy, errr, I mean laptop was delivered today. Man do I love Windows XP when you have instant working internet without hassle. The connection was giving us some trouble, but it’s our router – the thing is very finicky. Sometimes it gets mad when more than one computer is trying to access the internet at a time, as if that’s not the whole point of a router to begin with. Right now we have both our desktops and the laptop on and it’s behaving. Hopefully the new wireless router we ordered will work more consistently. It will be nice to be able to watch tv and chat online in the bedroom on Thursday nights while Joe is playing his PS2 in the living room.

Dude, you’re getting a Dell

I almost forgot the most happiest news of the past two weeks – Joe ordered a Dell laptop today. It’s nothing super fancy, mind you, but it’s faster than either of our desktop machines and it only cost $750 after taxes. Project ditch the desks has begun. :)
