May Days

I’ve been wanting to post an entry for awhile now but have been too much has been going on, good and bad. For now, let’s focus on the good. Here’s a timeline of what I’ve been up to recently.

May 4th – I tagged along with Joe to his place of employment for a little BBQ they had with the evening shift and met Joe’s boss who looks almost just like the CEO of my company. It was uncanny. Since then I’ve showed my CEO’s photo to some people Joe works with and they all agreed they could be brothers.

Friendship Park Conservatory

May 5th – Joe and I decided to check out a lesser-known conservatory I read about online called Friendship Park Conservatory. Our visit was quite peaceful as we were the only souls there probably due to the overcast slightly cool weather. I wish a place like that existed close to where I work. They have a cute courtyard where you could enjoy a relaxing lunch hour.

We took the 17th through the 21st off work with the intention of visiting Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska since we’ve never been to either but those plans were thwarted by the insanely crazy heat that settled into that area. There was no way we’d enjoy all the outdoor activities we had planned in 90+ degree weather. Instead we planned a two-day trip to Wisconsin.

Thursday May 17th

Blue and Gold Macaw

We took our time getting up and out the door but still made it to Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison about an hour after they opened. Parking is a total bitch there because their lot is woefully undersized so we spent a good time looking for parking just like four years ago when we first visited. We lucked out and found parking not too far from the zoo however, but that’s as far as our luck got us as the zoo was quite disappointing. I was expecting it to be small, but it seemed like most of the animals were off exhibit. Other than the giraffes and macaws it is a complete waste and I doubt we’ll ever visit again. I suppose it’s great for people who live nearby since they have a lot of fun stuff for the little kids.

Flower

From the zoo we made our way to Olbrich Botanical Gardens. It was very peaceful and not too big so we weren’t exhausted walking around the entire place. Plus it’s free. The conservatory on site, however, is not free and not that impressive so if we’re ever in town again I think I’d skip that portion of the visit.

By that time we were hungry so we headed to the downtown area of Madison to find sustenance. Yelp guided us to a little joint called The Old Fashioned which is literally across the street from the Madison Capitol Building. I believe it had been featured on Triple D too, but I’m not sure why because I was not impressed with the food at all. I ordered the burger made from grass-fed beef and seeing as how this is the third time I’ve tried a grass-fed beef burger somewhere and have been disappointed each and every time, I’m convinced you’re better off risking mad-cow disease and getting regular beef burgers. I mean, how do you go wrong with a burger? To me they are like pizza – good even when they’re bad. Yet this one was bad. Yuck.

After lunch we walked around the capitol building debating on whether to take a tour but decided against us since neither of us are that interested in politics. Instead we decided to go check out the hotel I had booked for the night – a Cambria Suites property. I love the chain but there’s not many of them across the country because it’s newer. We stayed in one in Columbus, Ohio a few years ago and it’s by far my favorite hotel chain. It’s clean, modern, and inexpensive. Each property has a pool, hot tub, fitness room, and a small bar/cafe and all the rooms include a microwave, refrigerator, and free internet access. Plus the hotel is completely non-smoking and doesn’t allow pets. It’s perfect for me and it’s really the only hotel I’ve ever stayed in where I didn’t feel uncomfortable or gross. But I digress.

We spent some time in the hot tub just relaxing and then we got too lazy to venture out for dinner so we shared a Caesar salad at the hotel cafe since despite not liking our lunch we were still pretty full from it.

Friday, May 18th

Amur Tiger

We were up fairly early to ensure that even with the hour drive between Madison and Milwaukee we’d get to the zoo at or near opening. We planned on stopping at Cracker Barrel for breakfast but there weren’t any off the expressway between the two cities so we ended up grabbing these horrible breakfast sandwiches from a Bruegger’s bagels near the zoo. We got to the zoo right as they opened and I couldn’t believe the line of cars, and school buses, waiting to get in. There must have been hundreds of kids on field trips that day. I can’t recall a more crowded visit so early in the morning. It kinda sucked because we couldn’t really get a look at anything in the reptile or small mammal houses as there were just way too many kids in there. We made a point to make a beeline for the big cat house when we first arrived, however, which was a very smart move because we got there not five minutes before a hoard of people did so I got some really fantastic shots of a tiger, lion cubs, and a decent photo of a cheetah. I’d say the big cat house alone is worth the visit to Milwaukee Zoo. It’s the best I’ve ever seen.

Beer is Born Here sign

Once we tired of the zoo we decided to take the Miller Brewery Tour which we missed out on during our last visit to the area. We got to the brewery at 11:30 but had to wait an hour for the next tour. It started with a long “commercial” about the place and then we had to walk around the campus to see the different areas. It was nothing like the Budweiser Brewery in St. Louis which I enjoyed much more. But it was free and killed some time so it wasn’t horrible or anything.

It was around 80 degrees out so we decided to drive toward the lake and find somewhere to eat. I read about a cute little burger stand right on the “beach” so we headed there and nearly froze our butts off. Holy crap! The weather by the lake was 63 degrees! We hurriedly ate our food and headed back the way we came while we watched the temperature gauge in the SUV increase back to 80. We had purchased tickets for a Brewers game that evening but had a ton of time to kill so we made our way over to a botanical garden I had read about but had to quickly scrap that plan when we realized it was over capacity due to all the prom kids getting their photos taken there. We ended up at a mall getting Starbucks and people watching before heading back toward Miller Stadium.

Miller Park

No sooner had we parked our vehicle in the lot were people all around us tailgating. I have not seen such fanfare at any of the Sox or Cubs games so it was interesting. We had nosebleed tickets we had purchased off Stubhub at a steal so once we got into the stadium we had some fun trying to figure out how to locate them. Their signage isn’t the best, but overall there was something about the park I really liked and I’d definitely buy tickets to a game again. We actually bought three tickets to ensure we had an empty seat for our gear and since they were only $3.75 each it wasn’t a big deal. Even as high as we were the view wasn’t bad at all. I like the slide the mascot goes down when the Brewers get a home run. The food at the stadium, as expected, was blah and overpriced. We ended up leaving around the 7th inning which was fine by me because they were losing anyway and I was growing bored, not to mentioned annoyed with the antics of this one guy in particular who was seated near us.

The rest of May went by quickly due to work stuff and other things I might write about some other time.

Another Great Weekend

DuPage County Historical Museum

Friday morning we visited the DuPage County Historical Museum. It’s pretty small but had interesting facts about the development of our county and the surrounding communities. On the second floor was a tribute to the Girl Scouts who are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and there’s a huge model train yard set up in the basement of the building which was cool to see.

Horse

From the museum we headed to Cosley Zoo to take photographs. I also wanted to add another frog to my collection of figurines but they didn’t have any in the gift shop anymore. After the zoo we stopped at the Danada Equestrian Center for a bit to see the horses and then headed down South to pick up K for the weekend (E had a band competition so he couldn’t make it).

On the way back home we stopped at Chick-Fil-A for lunch. I didn’t appreciate how good their food was the first time they came to Illinois because their chicken nuggets aren’t impressive, but I’ve since become a fan after trying the basic chicken sandwich and the chicken biscuit during breakfast. I tried the ice cream for the first time on Friday and loved it as well.

Saturday we went to see 21 Jump Street. It was much funnier than we expected. I haven’t laughed that much at a movie in so long. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to miss out on this gem by assuming it’s dumb when in actuality it’s the best comedy to come out in a long time. After the movie we went to FiveBelow which is a cute store where everything is $5 or less. I ended up getting a stylus for my iPad which I’m really digging. I haven’t used my finger since. :)

Sunday we did a little Spring cleaning in the garage and washed my car. We also cleaned our bikes, filled the tires and went for a short ride. Then we went to Houlihan’s where we enjoyed lunch on the patio since it was such a gorgeous day. This was immediately followed by some errands which included stopping at Whole Paycheck Foods for some Sodium Lauryl Sulfate free shampoo and conditioner which will hopefully help rid me of the seriously itchy scalp I’ve been suffering from for the past two weeks. My head is already feeling better after three uses!

Upon returning home we brought our folding chairs out and sat in the driveway for awhile surfing on our tablets and enjoying the gorgeous weather. It’s the modern equivalent of reading the newspaper on the porch since we have no porch and our patio sucks because it lacks shade and is surrounded by smokers which equals no fresh air. After we grew tired of sitting around we went for a walk.

It was such a great weekend I didn’t want it to end.

Feeling Good

I’m in a good mood which is sorely needed after the way I’ve been feeling lately. I think it’s at least in part due to the weather which is currently sunny and warm. I hate winter and I hope it’s behind us. The forecast has us in the 70’s the rest of the week. Woot!

I’m also excited because we both have Friday off. Three day weekends are the best!!! I don’t even care what we do – we don’t have any definitive plans but it’s going to be nice out so that’s all I care about.

Wow, what a pointless blog post, eh? Ok, here’s a few random thoughts rolling around in my mind.

What’s the deal with iTunes Home Sharing? It stopped working at some point after the last iTunes update. I spent some time today trying to figure it out. Then the router spontaneously rebooted and suddenly it was working again. Weird.

Speaking of Apple, it cracks me up how when I plug my iPad into my computer it says “Not Charging” in the upper right-hand corner. I imagine it’s thinking “haha sucker, you are not going to charge me that way”. Ironically, it is charging, albeit slowly. It was at 35% battery when I plugged it in and now it’s at 39%. Silly little thing.

I think we’re going to be changing our Fall trip to ensure we maximize our time on the East Coast. Even though we’re passing through Pennsylvania we probably won’t stop as originally intended. Since it’s closer to us than Boston or Portland we could always make that its own trip since I’d love to visit Pittsburgh, Hershey and Philadelphia. However, since we’re going to literally drive right through it, we’re going to spend a day in New York City. A day is all I can wrestle out of the hubby since he has zero desire to visit New York. It’s low on my list as well but it would be silly not to stop. All I care about seeing is Central Park Zoo anyway. Is that weird? Maybe we should visit the Empire State Building too. And the Statue of Liberty. And Times Square. And the Brooklyn Bridge. Hmmm, maybe one day is not going to cut it. Joe is going to kill me when he sees this list… ;)

My latest iOS addiction – Draw Something. It’s Pictionary without rules!

Things to Celebrate

The promotion at work is finalized! I will no longer be doing billing, but will be working on special projects, internal audits, and system improvements which in many ways I was already doing except now I’ll have more time to focus on those things, I have a cooler title, and I’ll be getting paid more. Woo hoo!

As a result this means I can actually take vacation time during the beginning of the month which I haven’t done in six years. So come October we are taking a two week road trip to the East coast, a trip we had planned, and scrapped, over seven years ago.

Right now the general plan is to make stops in Pennsylvania (Hershey, and maybe Pittsburgh), Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland, Maine. We picked October because it’s our favorite month and the Fall foliage should be at its peak according to some websites I’ve checked.

If anyone has recommendations on places to stay, or things to see, feel free to comment or send me an e-mail. I’m so excited!

October

The month is almost over and I haven’t really posted. Too busy trying to have fun to sit down and put my thoughts together, so now I need to catch up.

Saturday October 1st was the only weekend of the month where both kids would be over together due to K’s extra-curricular activities so we went to Jonamac Orchard to pick pumpkins from their patch and then to Sonny Acres which is an annual tradition for us.

Sunday October 2nd after the kids went home Joe and I drove out to Long Grove for their Apple Festival because we cannot resist the apple cider donuts from Apple Haus. This festival gets more crowded every year, not to mention more expensive. I am quite disgusted over it and do not plan to attend it again. I wrote a review over at Yelp if you’re so inclined to read the details.

Scarecrow Festival

Sunday October 9th we attended the Scarecrow Festival in St. Charles. That festival is getting more crowded every year too so we made a vow to get there before they open next year so we can see the scarecrows in peace because we like it, but it’s hard to see much with all the people milling about.

Saturday October 15th we just had E with us so he and Joe built a Halloween house out of a cookie kit we had purchased years ago. It’s one of those things where it sounds like a good idea at the time but when you pull it out with intentions of making it you think “eh, too much work”. I’m glad E had fun with it, though, because I doubt I’ll ever buy another one. I’m happy to have freed up the space in my Halloween storage tote! Later the same day Brother #2 came over and he and E carved pumpkins. Once it got dark we headed over to Sonny Acres to go on their Haunted Hayride. I couldn’t believe how many people were there! The weather was pretty nice and I enjoyed the ride (it’s about 20 minutes long) but E was scared (he didn’t think he would be) so that sucked. I’ve wanted to do the hayride for a few years but the weather never seemed to work out so it was nice to finally go. When we got back I made roasted pumpkin seeds for everyone to snack on.

Back to the Future

This past week we’ve been off work for a lovely staycation. On Saturday we went to the Volo Auto Museum thanks to a Groupon. I’ve been wanting to visit the place for years so it worked out perfectly. It’s a real fun museum even for people who aren’t particularly into cars such as myself. They have K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider! What more do you want? I could have done without the lame Haunted Trolley Tour, however. I think the whole “we have ghosts on the property” schtick is a bit much. The ghost story told to us by a hologram was lame. The only thing about the tour is you have to take it if you want to see the cars owned by former celebrities. Otherwise I’d suggest skipping it.

Later the same evening we drove around St. Charles looking at the houses participating in the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes Tour. The first one we stopped at had turned their garage and backyard into a walk-through haunted house which was cool. A few of the family members were dressed up and one led visitors through the yard but it wasn’t too scary (I’m not big on haunted houses). Unfortunately it seemed like most of the homes weren’t decorated so much as set up as a haunted house which was a bit disappointing. I just wanted to see some cool decorations and scope them out for E so when he comes over this weekend we know which ones to take him too (since there’s far too many to see them all in one night).

St. James Farm

Sunday we went on a Quail Wagon ride at St. James Farm. We were the only people to sign up for the 11:30 ride so we had the carriage to ourselves which seemed rather fitting since it was our 6 year wedding anniversary. Our guide gave us a lot of cool information surrounding the farm and we learned why all the buildings were now closed to the public – they were open when the forest preserve district first purchased the property a few years ago but they had to close them for insurance purposes since they don’t have enough staff to keep an eye on everything. Even the public restrooms were closed and replaced by port-a-johns. After our tour and walking around taking pics we drove down the road to Herrick Lake and walked around there for awhile. It was a very low-key day but neither of us minded.

Lake

Monday we went to Morton Arboretum and had lunch in their Ginko Cafe which was ok. The fish tacos weren’t great but I liked the Waldorf salad. They have scarecrows around the lake which are always cute. There was even an angry birds scarecrow.

Tuesday was “doctor day”. I had an appointment to see my primary care and then Joe had to go to the dentist to get a temporary crown put in.

Inside the Field Museum

Wednesday we took advantage of the fact that it was a free day to visit the Field Museum of Natural History. I think the last time I was there was in college for a botany assignment, if you don’t count the year Joe’s employer held their holiday party there. It’s still a pretty boring museum in the grand scheme of things but I did like the Evolving Planet exhibit which went through Earth’s history and each mass extinction. Did you know we’re in the middle of an ice age right now? It’s true!

Wednesday evening we went to E’ school to watch him perform in a Fall concert. He played the drums on two of the three songs his jazz band performed and did a great job. His drum lessons are paying off.

Yesterday we visited my parents which is always fun, and now we’re just relaxing before we have to head out to see K in her school play. I can’t believe there’s only three more days left before we have to go back to work. Having time off is too much fun. I wish it didn’t have to end. I’ve been a bit anxious all week too because my doctor wants to me to have a colonoscopy which I have scheduled for next week. I’m not looking forward to that at all.
