Websites and Legos

My schedule was off all week, peaking on Thursday because I had a conference call scheduled at 6 pm with one of the offices in another country. Since my shift normally ends at 4 pm, I came in late to even things out. Joe also had a late work evening, so we both didn’t have to get out of bed til 8 am. You may or may not be surprised how much a three hour shift difference throws things out of whack. All day I felt like my head was in the clouds. I like being up early so I can get home early. I don’t think I could ever go back to working 9-6 like I did when I worked for the cable company.

I stopped at the library on the way into work to pick up some more books on beading since I had so much time to kill. I have a necklace design for Joe finished, I just have to string it and I’m nervous about that. Plus I’ve been putting it off because we’ve been busy watching tv in an attempt to keep the DVR empty enough to pick up all the new Fall shows.

We’ve also been spending a good two hours every night playing Lego Star Wars II. That game kicks a$$! I never thought I’d be so addicted to a video game. I love how all the characters are rendered like Legos and when you slap someone it makes a clicky-clack noise. Too cute. Sometimes when we’re done with a level we’ll just sit there and slap one another which I am sure reduces our points but is too much fun to pass up. Right now we’re stuck in Dagobah and can’t find a way out, so I have to hunt down some hints online.

Man, I have a load of feeds to catch up on. I haven’t spent more than a half hour total on my home computer since Sunday (and I never read blogs from work). Last Sunday I spent a good three hours creating entries and uploading photos from the weekend and it really irritated me how long it took. It just further confirmed that it’s not how I want to spend my time anymore, particularly during the week. Since the kids are over this weekend and it’s raining, I’m slowly catching up on my reading. After I’m done I’m going to seriously reduce the feeds I’m subscribed to because I feel anxious having all those un-read feeds just sitting there.

Saturday

Yesterday we were out of the house before 10 am to check out Kuiper’s Family Farm. We take the kids apple picking every year, but we usually go to Jonamac Orchard. We wanted to scope this other place out before deciding to change our tradition. On the way there this guy completely cut us off and almost hit us. Joe was so mad that when we ended up at the next light, he gave the guy a severe beating. No, just kidding. He did roll down the window and yell at him, though (he had moved back into the other lane after he passed the person he almost hit us trying to get around). I haven’t seen Joe that mad in a long time! You could tell the guy was scared because he had this nervous grin and said he was sorry. To Joe’s credit, he didn’t call the guy any names, just explained he needs to turn his head and look before just moving over. Hopefully the whole experience taught the guy to be more careful in the future because he could really hurt someone with his shitty driving.

Anyway, the farm was ok. It’s much bigger and spread out than the place we usually visit, but it’s more expensive and crowded too. We spent less time there than it took to drive back and forth. They have a huge bakery and store on premise so Joe got some coffee and donuts. While he was doing that I used the restroom. And the only reason I am telling you this is because I cannot believe how ignorant some people are. When I got into the restroom I had to wait because all the stalls were occupied. I happened to notice that the faucets on one of the two sinks was on and the sink was filling up, so I walked over and shut it off. When a stall opened up, I went inside and did my business. When I came out, the same sink was running and filling up once again! So I went over and shut it off. WTF? The handles are the kind you pull toward you to turn on and push back to shut off, so I don’t think on a difficulty scale of 1-10 it was above a 1, yet both the hot and cold water were on full blast. Are people that lazy? Somehow I doubt people leave their sinks running at home so I really don’t get it.

After I met up with Joe again we decided to get some homemade caramel apples and this yummy looking brownie mix. I’m really looking forward to trying it; I just I hope it’s worth the $5.50 we paid. It’s gourmet, so it has to be, right? ;)

Beads The way to the farm takes you through downtown St. Charles so on the way back we stopped to check out a beading store I had found online called Spill The Beads. It was really cute and I bought a couple of mixed bead sets I plan on using to make bracelets. Overall I found their prices a little high, but the selection is superb and if you prefer buying only the exact amount of beads you need, it’s better than going to a craft store. I might go back next weekend for World Bead Day since everything is 30% off and I was thinking about getting a beading instructional book.

The store is located a block or two from the Fox River, so we hung out there for a bit taking pictures, then started walking along the path. These two ducks kept following me, no doubt thinking I had food. Too bad I didn’t. We discovered a huge park past the bridge where they have a ton of picnic tables. It’s a really cute area that I’d like to visit again, this time with bread for the duckies! Also, I just found out while researching the area for this post that there’s a minature golf course at the park. Cool beans!

I can’t remember what we did after that. Oh yea, we checked out a new taco joint for lunch. It was really cute and inexpensive but I wasn’t impressed with the quality of their steak, so we’ll probably just stick to our regular place.

We took advantage of the nice weather by going out back to play catch for a bit. Joe was teaching me the proper way to throw a baseball. I’m not exactly what you call athletic, or coordinated, but I used to play catch with my dad all the time because the older of my brothers was never into sports and my youngest brother was born ten years after my dad lost interest in any sort of father/child bonding experiences. It’s kinda funny when you think about it: I was the one my dad took fishing, to Sox games, played games with, etc. My brother preferred to be inside playing video games. He hasn’t changed a whole lot, either. Except now it’s the internet.

Bike rides and mini golf

I can’t believe I managed to drag my butt out of bed this morning at 8 am considering we didn’t get to bed until after 1 am! Yesterday was quite a day!

It started with a trip back to the forest preserve we had discovered a few weeks ago with our bikes in tow. This place has a gargantuan trail. We didn’t have a set plan, we just took off, stopping at the various intersections to decide which way to go next. The thing about this trail, however, is once you get to a certain point, it doesn’t make a loop, which means you have to come back the way you came. Well, we kept going and going and eventually realized we had gone over three miles because it connects to the Danada Forest Preserve and Equestrian Center. We rode around a bit so I could take pictures of the horses and the half-mile oval racetrack the forest preserve district has kept in tact.

In total, we rode 7 or 8 miles. Not bad considering that we haven’t ridden our bikes at all this year! Hell, I think that’s the most exercise we’ve gotten all summer. What a high, though! Sure, I thought I was going to die on that last mile, but it felt damn good too. My legs don’t even hurt that much today like I was expecting.

On the way back home we stopped at Subway to grab lunch. Afterwards we showered and took off for my parents’ place. We got there around 3:30 and hung out for a bit and had dinner. My dad had grilled some burgers and hot dogs, or more like murdered them ten times over. I told my mom I will grill them next time. He keeps the burgers on the grill for ten minutes each side!!! That is way too long which is why they are dry.

My mom wanted to go to this place in Indiana where they have go-karts, batting cages, an arcade, and miniature golf. She had free coupons for the golf and we agreed to go, but weren’t exactly looking forward to it. I’m glad we went, however, because we had a blast!! My brothers can actually be fun to hang out with when they want to be. I even got two holes in one without even trying!

We played air hockey, skeeball, and some other pointless games at the arcade. Even though it was very crowded, it didn’t feel overwhelming which was nice. When we got back to my parents’ we all played Aggravation, including my younger brother’s new girlfriend. You should have seen how mad he was getting earlier in the day when we were teasing him for meeting her on MySpace. He has mellowed out, though, and now you can tease him without him storming off to his room. It’s nice because who wants to be serious all the time?

We didn’t get home until 1 am which means I’m going to have a hell of a time getting back into our sleep schedule for work tomorrow, but it was worth it.

Games

How is it that I taught my husband proper grammar, help him with spelling, and even proof read his blog entries, yet he beat me at Scrabble? No wonder I have never owned this game before today. I am so frustrated! I didn’t think I’d kick his ass, but I certainly wasn’t expecting him to kick mine. I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked: he seems to beat me at pretty much everything except fighting games on the PS2.

We have a decent collection of board games and the like now that we’ve been together almost six years and I’m always looking for something new and fun to play, preferably something that the two of us can engage in since we don’t have people over very often.

NASCAR USG Sheetrock 400

NASCAR: July 9, 2006 Oh man am I tired! Sitting out in the sun for hours tends to do that. Joe got us free tickets to the NASCAR race today at Chicagoland Speedway. Free is good, especially when they are $110 seats! Parking was free too, so other than the gas, we didn’t pay a cent for entertainment (we brought our own water and ate when we got home).

That place kicks the Milwaukee Mile’s ass. It has 75,000 seats and it was sold out. That doesn’t even count all the people in the infield standing on top of their RVs and whatnot! The funny thing is that it didn’t feel as crowded as the Milwaukee Mile because the area is so big. I saw two of my old bosses at the race since the group of seats were reserved through Joe’s work and I used to work there too. I didn’t realize it when I passed either one of them getting to our seats, though. Whoops! Guess I’m rude.

Then as I was getting to my seat, these two girls and two guys had to move as they were sitting there and I clocked the one girl in her forehead. Ouch! She was cool about it, though. I said I was sorry and she replied “that’s ok, I think I spilled my beer on you so I guess we’re even”. I don’t think she did though, and later she even said, “Or maybe I spilled it on myself”. They were all drunk and giddy which was cracking me up. The girl kept talking to me and she was really nice. She even gave me some earplugs from the box she had brought since we had forgotten to bring or buy any. I thought it was funny that she remembered those but not sunscreen. She was SO red! She is going to be hurting tomorrow. She told me that they had been there since 10 am. We got there right before the race started at 2:30 and left right before 5 pm and we were dying from the heat; I couldn’t imagine being there all day. No wonder that girl was so trashed. She wasn’t obnoxious like some people can be, though. In fact, she was very considerate. In addition to offering me the earplugs, she’d lean back to make sure she wasn’t in the way when I was taking photos and even asked me if I could see ok.

We didn’t stay for the end of the race because frankly I couldn’t care less who won (it was Jeff Gordon, number 24, in case you do) and wanted to beat the mayhem out of the place. We just went for the fun of it. And it was definitely interesting, but I could never see getting into it and paying that much money to follow races around the country. To each their own I guess.

Oh, I almost forget. Will Ferrell was at the race promoting his new movie. How cool is that? I love him! Too bad I couldn’t get a good picture, even with my zoom lens. :p
