Pre-Memorial Day Celebrations

Yesterday we went over to my parents for dinner and games. It was rainy so no outdoor activities were had. My mom had mostly Chinese food, so I brought my homemade fried rice and some pot-stickers we had picked up from Costco earlier that day. I wasn’t sure if we’d like them since they were made with chicken and not a brand we had ever tried before, but they came out awesome. And the bag is huge and resealable, so we’ll be enjoying more for some time to come.

No one except Joe and I wanted to play Taboo, so we played Aggravation and then Cards Against Humanity. Joe ordered a big box of blank playing cards and made up some new questions and answers which helped to keep the game fresh, although truth be told, I’m getting kind of sick of the game. I think I’ll leave it at home next time we visit.

My Brother’s Birthday & New Planter

Saturday we went to my parents to celebrate Brother #1’s birthday and play Cards Against Humanity. Brother #2 and his girlfriend were also there. I hadn’t seen either since Christmas. I’m really not sure what’s going on with Brother #2 because he hasn’t been keeping in touch. I’ve tried reaching out a few times only to be ignored so I’m done. He’s either angry at me over an imagined slight or he’s too caught up in his own shit. Either way I’m not going to keep trying. It’s too frustrating.

Anyway, these are the presents I gave my brother.

Brothers Presents

He likes goofy shit, I like buying presents, and it was all less than $20 so that’s a win win win.

My mom made him an orange-flavored cake which was better than it sounds. With vanilla ice cream it was like eating a dreamsicle.

We stayed until just before midnight so we didn’t get to bed until late even though we had errands I wanted to run in the morning. I finally dragged my butt out of bed around 8 am on Sunday and we ran to Walmart to get that out of the way early. I hate grocery shopping on the weekends unless we can beat the crowds.

Sunday afternoon I cleaned the rat cages and the rest of the house while Joe built a planter for our patio.

New Planter

I love how it came out. It’s a Pinterest un-ironic nailed it!

Next weekend we plan to buy flowers and more soil to set it up. Plus we will be transplanting that bush to the right to a newer, nicer planter we picked up a few weeks ago. Coupled with the umbrella my mom gave us, our patio will be a tranquil place to relax once it warms up. I’m looking forward to it!

Corned Beef Monday

Even though I got my butt out of bed before 8 am this morning the day still flew by. I worked out, cleaned, made breakfast muffins, and put corned beef and cabbage in the crockpot since I wouldn’t have time to cook it tomorrow due to work. It came out really good too! I used to think I hated corned beef and cabbage but it turns out I just don’t like how restaurants prepare it. Mine was so moist and delicious! I told Joe I’m happy to make it more frequently than once a year. I also painted my nails glitter green to celebrate the holiday tomorrow.

When we were out yesterday we stopped at CVS so I could grab a great deal on lip gloss – it was a one day deal for $3.00 off the $3.88 sale price so after tax it was only $1.20. I’m turning into such a girly girl lately.

We also stopped at the library where I grabbed some books and CDs. The plan was to relax and read this afternoon but I didn’t get much time for that between my brother messaging me online to complain about my family and my mom on the phone complaining about everyone too (at the same time, no less). Due to getting a poor night’s sleep last night they were really getting under my skin. Actually, it was more my mom than my brother, simply because I find her so stubborn and have to bite my tongue to avoid starting an argument. Because really, what’s the point when she’s not going to listen to reason anyway? Sorry for the vagueness of this, but I don’t have the time, nor the inclination, to get into the details.

Suffice it to say, once I was off the phone I was in a foul mood that didn’t dissipate for another two hours. Ugh! I did get a little reading in but not as much as I would have liked. Joe is at a work dinner tonight, however, so I plan to go upstairs shortly so I can read so more before bed.

Fun Weekend

Last weekend we went to the movies to see Hot Tub Time Machine 2 which was just ok. This weekend it was Kingsman: The Secret Service. What’s funny is how I’m always looking more forward to seeing the comedy but it’s the action film I end up liking. I hadn’t even heard of the Kingsman movie before but Joe and E wanted to see it and I’m glad we did. It had some really cool fighting scenes and the music was awesome. Once the library gets the soundtrack I plan on borrowing it.

Saturday evening we went over to my parents’ for dinner and to play Apples to Apples.

Apples to Apples

Brother # 1 and I agreed later on that it doesn’t hold a candle to Cards Against Humanity. Maybe if I had never played the latter before I would have enjoyed Apples to Apples more but I felt like it was pretty weak in comparison. But I really don’t want to play Cards Against Humanity with E. Brother # 1 was trying to make a case since E is now 17 and has probably played the game before with his friends but it still would make me uncomfortable. Even though he’s not my kid biologically, I still see him as a child I need to protect. Plus Brother # 1 takes vulgarity to a whole ‘nother level and often lacks a filter. I don’t want E to be fully exposed to that at his age. Maybe when he’s 21 or something, haha.

It was a fun night, though, and we left around 11 pm. With the hour drive home and the time change for Daylight Savings we didn’t get to bed until 1 am. Yikes! As a result we only got about five hours of sleep so Sunday after we did some grocery shopping we just relaxed and watched tv the rest of the day.

Today I decided to try a new crockpot recipe and am making stuffed cabbage. I’ll link to it later if it comes out good.

Valentine’s Day & Games

Joe and I agreed that we weren’t going to exchange gifts for Valentine’s Day this year and instead just have a nice dinner at our favorite Vietnamese place. We changed those plans slightly when my mom asked if we wanted to come over to hang out and play games. So we just got the food earlier. Plus Joe totally broke the pact – this was waiting for me when I walked downstairs Saturday morning.

Valentine's Day gift

I’m not sure what to do with the suckers since I’m more of a chocolate candy person, but they are very cute! And the Russell Stover dark chocolate & marshmallow heart that was included in my gift basket was actually very tasty. I’m not a huge fan of Russell Stover chocolates so I was pleasantly surprised.

Joe also sent me these two ecards. LOL!

Ecard2

Of course, I didn’t keep our pact either and ordered a cute lady-bug Valentine cookie for Joe from Cheryl’s but it was never delivered! I just got off the phone with them and I’m getting a refund. I don’t trust that the replacement will get here either since it started out with UPS and then disappeared once it was transferred to the post office over a week ago. Our asshole mailman probably ate it. ;)

Anyway, after a visit to Costco that was intended just for me to check out their optical department, but ended with us spending $32 on four items (which we had to haul around because we didn’t bother grabbing a cart), and a stop at two pet stores in search of a larger affordable rat cage (which was a bust), we relaxed at home for a bit before heading over to my parents.

When we first arrived we worked on transferring all their files from their old computer to their new one. We tried doing it the last time we were over but Microsoft OneDrive sucks. I had uploaded a zip file to my account but it kept failing when I tried to download it. And until the other day we both had completely forgotten that Joe has an external portable hard drive (and I just remembered today that I have two external hard drives – doh!). So we transferred the files there and then it took mere minutes to get them on the new machine. Derp!

We had no luck getting their old ink jet printer to work, though. The drivers are too old for Windows 7 and my parents refuse to get a laser printer even though it’s so much more economical for the majority of the population who merely prints forms and coupons. Ink jets make about zero sense to own unless you want to print photos and/or color documents (although even for the latter I’d suggest a color laser printer).

My mom gave us some Valentine chocolates, and Brother # 1 gave me a belated birthday present (the Dove chocolates pictured). I tried that extra dark bar last night and it is way too bitter for me! I guess I don’t like daaaaark chocolate, just semi-dark.

Chocolates

I hadn’t intended on us staying at their house past midnight, but we brought along Cards Against Humanity, which we had ordered online a few weeks ago and hadn’t played yet. Holy crap is that game fun! Brother # 1 in particular just loved it (Brother # 2 was out with his girlfriend so it was just Joe, me, my parents, and one brother). We played for hours!

We also ordered Apples to Apples the other day and it was delivered on Sunday (and the Post Office wonders why they are going bankrupt). We plan to play that with E since Cards Against Humanity is way inappropriate (although based on a few things he has said it sounds like he’s played it before with his friends. Oh boy would his mom be horrified if she knew that).

Incidentally, I updated my Excel list of games we own the other day and we have no less than 50 non-video games, including a handful we haven’t even played yet – Boom-O, Bunco, Friends Trivia (a card game), Mad Gab, Scene It Deluxe, and Scattergories. I think it’s safe to say we’re a bit addicted to games in this house. But I’m sure we’ll play them eventually – they are much more fun that video games in my opinion. I really need to host another game night soon!
