Today

… the next door neighbors annoyed the hell out of me going in and out of their front door which every time it slams, due to the shared wall, is felt in our home.

… Joe’s brother and sister-in-law came to visit.

… We had a fantastic dinner at Lonestar Steakhouse (5-star filet, baby).

… I’m transferring over a ton of MP3s to my Mom’s new computer so when we bring it to her house tomorrow, it will be ready to go. This includes the entire Cure catalog (yes, she has started listening to them, as has my youngest brother; all a part of my evil plan to make them as obsessed as myself).

It was a good day.

Jeepers

Joe and I can’t decide whether we are just cheap, or not used to how much money it costs to entertain children outside the home. I really don’t know how people do it! We wanted to take the kids somewhere fun today, but Indiana Beach was out of the question due to the questionable weather forecast that included low temps and rain.

We spent a good hour looking online for somewhere that both kids would want to go (they tend to never agree on the same thing) that wouldn’t cost too much. We were going to try bowling, but one game for four people and shoe rental was $20+ and the girl didn’t really want to go. We were also going to try this place called Nickel City where all arcade games are a nickel, but again, the girl didn’t seem all that interested and being a 45-minute drive away, we weren’t chancing wasting the time.

So we ended up at Jeepers which is literally down the street from our place. Thank goodness Joe had remembered passing it! It’s this arcade/indoor amusement park with a handful of rides. We spent $65 for a few hours of fun and that included coupons we used, but at least they both enjoyed themselves, so it was worth it. My biggest pet peeve is spending money to take them somewhere and them complaining, which fortunately hasn’t happened often.

We had pizza (there goes my diet again, no wonder many mothers are overweight: it’s too costly and difficult to eat healthy when you’re trying to feed kids), bought a boatload of tokens (still have a ton left too; maybe Joe and I will go back by ourselves to play air hockey), and the kids got wristbands so they could go on the rides as much as they wanted. They definitely got our money’s worth as we were ready to go far before they were. The nice thing was adults could accompany the kids on the rides for free, so we went on a few rides too.

Now we’re exhausted. And by we, I mean Joe and I. If only I could have the energy of a kid again. :p

Update on Joe’s dad

Things are improving for Joe’s dad and we’re very relieved. His breathing tube has been removed and he seems much more coherent today. We still haven’t gotten the test results back, but we’re fairly certain he will make a full recovery. He’s going to start physical therapy tomorrow too. It’s amazing what a difference a few days make. On Friday Joe’s family was talking as if he was going to either pass away or be severely mentally incapacitated. I’m not sure if he just came out of everything or they were overreacting; I’m just happy that things are looking up. We’ll probably leave here on Wednesday if things continue to improve. I miss our home, particularly our bed.

It’s a dry heat

Greetings from sunny overcast Arizona! We didn’t exactly plan coming out here, but when Joe’s mom called on Friday freaking out and saying she needed us because his father wasn’t doing well, we didn’t have much choice. We rushed home from work around 11 am and started packing. Unfortunately, due to it being a weekend and Spring Break, there were absolutely ZERO flights out to Phoenix. We even tried flights into Tucson or out of St. Louis, Missouri. No go. There wasn’t anything until Sunday and it was $600 one way for one person. :p

Stressful Day

Today has been a very stressful day: Joe’s dad went into the hospital for an angioplasty and they realized that he needs open-heart surgery right away. Because he was on blood thinners, they couldn’t do the procedure today, so they scheduled it for Monday. However, it turns out they put him on some medication to counteract the blood thinners and he’s going to have a triple bypass tomorrow morning.

We were at our wits end earlier, trying to figure out if we should fly out there (they live in Arizona), but there seems to be no flights out of Chicago until tomorrow evening, and by then he will be out of surgery. Being an analytical person, I looked up the mortality rates for this procedure, and the statistics are encouraging. It’s certainly put our minds at ease somewhat. Plus the doctor assured Joe’s mom and sister that this is pretty routine.

We’re still worried, of course, but I am sure he will be fine. I’d say we’re praying, but we’re not religious, so that seems rather hypocritical, but you get the gist of it.

Please send good thoughts our way.

UPDATE 3/12/05: The procedure was successful and Joe’s dad is now resting.
