Music Nostalgia

Friday we went to Half Price Books since we had coupons and hadn’t been there in awhile. They moved the video game section to a wider aisle which is helpful since it gets more traffic. Now it’s much easier to browse without getting in someone’s way. I was hoping to find a Wii U for cheap since I’d like to have one eventually, but I don’t want to pay full price. They didn’t have any, however.

I enjoyed browsing the store looking at everything from board games, to CDs, to vinyl records. It brought back that feeling I’d get when I would go to shops in the city like Evil Clown (no longer in business) for bootlegs, or one of the old record stores on Clark St. for vinyl. Even both Tower Records locations in Chicago hold a special place in my heart, particularly the one on Clark St. because that’s where I purchased Substance by New Order and bought my tickets to the first Cure show I ever attended in 1996.

I came across a Cure tribute album and wasn’t sure whether I had it so I bought it; with the coupon it was just over $3. Turns out I had more than half the songs already on my hard drive even though I didn’t own the CD. The cover art looked familiar, however, so I’m guessing my ex must have owned it and I had a copy of some of the songs. Now I have them all. It’s not a bad tribute album overall, especially the version of The Walk which is my favorite.

I also picked up DJ Hero for the Xbox360. I’ve always been drawn to the game but never enough to buy it. With the coupon and some credit from selling some books it was only $3 so I figured why not. As long as I get even an hour of enjoyment from playing it then it will have been well worth it.

Once we got home I decided to clean the rat cages and listen to The Holy Hour which is a Cure podcast I recently discovered. I’m now up to episode 17 and am loving listening to these guys talk about all things Cure.

Once I was done with the cages I pulled out all my Cure memorabilia of which I have a decent amount. I have way more vinyl than I remembered. Too bad I don’t have a record player! I had to take a couple of pictures although I’d like to take better quality ones at some point.

The Cure Vinyl - Singles

That concert last month really did a number on me and I feel like I’ve become a rabid Cure fan. I’ve always loved them more than any band but the obsession has hit me like a 2×4 over the past two months.

The Cure @ UIC Pavilion

Last night’s show was AMAZING! But let me back up a bit…

We decided to head toward the venue super early to avoid the nastiness that is Friday rush hour traffic into the city. We left the house at 2:30 pm and arrived at 4 pm, stopping at a Thai restaurant for dinner. Then we went a few blocks down the street to a bar where Joe had a couple of beers and we played darts to pass the time. We got to the venue a little after 6 pm and waited for the long line outside to dissipate before leaving the cool confines of our car to deal with the 99° heat.

Once inside I hit the bathroom before we located our seats. We were in the nosebleed section – 215, Row J, seats 19 and 20 (which was only one away from being on the aisle). A guy who sat there briefly left, thank god, because his bright phone screen was distracting me.

The Cure - Chicago 2016

Even though it felt pretty cold in the air-conditioned building when we arrived it was rather warm and stuffy inside, particularly in the balcony area. Turns out I didn’t need the sweater I brought along at all! Incidentally, I wore my favorite Cure-bird t-shirt and didn’t see one other person wearing one. Not even that many people were wearing Cure t-shirts at all, in fact. I have to wonder how many people even recognized mine other than the woman outside the venue who stopped me to compliment it. She got into The Cure in 1992 which is just a year after I did.

As always, the security at the venue was a joke. Pat-downs for the men and just a purse search for the women. No metal detectors.

The venue itself sucks because the hallways are too narrow to accommodate traffic. Plus there are literally two bathrooms in the entire place, both of which are on the 1st level on opposite ends of the building. We tried to go down there for some water and to use the restroom between the opening act (The Twilight Sad who was surprisingly good) and The Cure coming on and went right back to our seats because it was wall to wall people. I did end up going back down there by myself right before The Cure was due to come on but it was hell pushing through the crowd to even get to the bathroom. I couldn’t even tell where the line to get water was so I went back to my seat without any (and since it was so warm I was parched).

One more complaint before I get to the show itself – WTF is up with people constantly getting up during these events? Luckily most of the people in our row stayed seated like we did (I didn’t even end up going to the bathroom again until we got home hour four hours later) but so many people, many of the same ones, were up and down ALL night. You came to see a band – sit the fuck down and watch! Jeez! I’ve got lots of idiots blocking my recordings (and I kept my phone low so as not to disturb the people around me) because they couldn’t sit still.

And shame on the venue for not replacing the burnt out bulb over our staircase. Every other one in the venue was lit, but ours was in complete darkness so we had all these people shining their phone flashlights in our faces trying to read the row numbers to find their seats. The labeling could be better anyway.

Also, these two woman sitting behind us couldn’t STFU during the opening act. I was just about to turn around and give them a peace of my mind when they left because they weren’t in the right seats anyway. /rant

Now for the good stuff – the show!

The Cure - Chicago 2016

This was my sixth time seeing The Cure live and I think it was their best show yet. Joe definitely thought so and he’s seen them twice before. They started the show with Shake Dog Shake which was a welcome surprise instead of something like Plainsong or Want. From there it just got better and better. I took a ton of video, recording a total of 16 full songs, which is way more than I planned on taking but wanted them for the memories. They aren’t really great, so check out this guy’s because they are professional quality!

Robert was talkative between some songs and even joked about how unintelligible he tends to be when speaking to the audience. During that segment we could actually understand him which was nice but he quickly fell back into his old pattern of mumbling as the evening progressed.

In all they played 32 songs, 10 of which I’ve never heard live before. One of those was The Top, which they haven’t played live in the U.S. in 32 years!!! Here’s a short snippet from my recording.

Pretty amazing, even if I didn’t get to hear A Forest like I was hoping. They’ll probably play it tonight at the second Chicago show. I know people will be periscoping it but I won’t be able to watch because we’ll be at B’s girlfriend’s birthday pool party. I’ll be interested to see the set list later tonight, though.

Here’s the full set list. I’ve highlighted the ten songs I’ve never heard live before.

Adventures in Damaged Appliances

This morning we visited Northside Park in Wheaton so I could get some photos of the wildlife. I love this park so much!

Northside Park

We saw a Great Blue Heron as well as other birds.

Great Blue Heron

Afterwards we went to Lowes to buy a new dishwasher since ours finally crapped out last night. It was 26 years old so it was time. I did a little research online and Consumer Reports recommended Whirlpool so we went with that even though we didn’t get the specific model in their recommendation as it was $150 more. We didn’t want any bells and whistles – just a basic dishwasher like our old one.

The model we bought was on sale for $299. We brought it home and when Joe was getting ready to install it we noticed the side panel was cracked. And of course it wasn’t the side of the dishwasher facing the sink so you’d never notice it. Noooo, it had to be the side facing out where everyone walks past and it’s noticeable. Can we seriously not catch a break with buying damaged appliances? I know it’s only a cosmetic issue, but WTF?

Cracked Dishwasher

We didn’t want to take it back to Lowes since it was the last one in stock other than the floor model so I called Whirlpool and they are sending someone out on Friday to determine the part that needs to be replaced. Because me taking pictures and sending it to them isn’t sufficient. Even though they know exactly what piece it is and the model and serial number. Then of course they will have to come back to actually do the replacement. I feel like someone should pay me for my time and aggravation.

Cable & Internet

We ran into a little snafu dealing with WOW so we’re not getting their services for the time being. We called Comcast today, however, to cancel our cable service. Once the rep realized I was serious (I also mentioned we’d be dropping the internet service soon), she gave us an offer that we couldn’t refuse – internet at the same speed we have now and digital economy basic cable for $60 per month for the next 12 months. Internet by itself? $80 per month. Yep, it costs more to NOT have cable. Crazy, huh?

We disconnected the DVR and brought it to the Xfinity store to swap it for a regular cable box. Their stores aim for an Apple Store vibe which is nice.

Xfinity Store

Waiting over 20 minutes just to swap equipment? Not so much.

Once we got home I checked our new channel lineup and it’s barely more than the local channels, plus a few cable channels like the Food and Cartoon Networks, and Comedy Central. No more FX or TBS though.

The great part is that we cut our bill by $50 per month which isn’t chump change. Once we get our DIY home security set up we’ll disconnect that and save an additional $40 per month.

On the way home we stopped at Dunkin Donuts because I wanted to try their new Almond Joy flavored iced coffee and get my free donut for National Donut Day. Why I didn’t ask for decaf is beyond me. Even though I only drank half my coffee I feel terrible. I should know better.

Brookfield Zoo

Giraffes

It’s been a few years since we visited Brookfield zoo so Joe snagged free passes from the library on Thursday thanks to the Museum Adventure Pass program in Illinois. We debated what day to visit since the passes are good for a week and settled on Monday thinking it wouldn’t be too crowded since many kids are still in school and it’s too late in the year for field trips. Boy were we wrong! I’ve never seen so many kids – it was ridiculous. The line to get into the zoo was the longest I’ve seen considering we got there just as it opened. Usually the early bird gets the worm but not this time. I’m not sure if that’s because they don’t open until 10 am but I think we would have been better off going on a Sunday.

Despite wanting to leave the second we got there, we braved the crowds since it cost us $11 for parking. We didn’t go into all the animals buildings, however, since that’s where the highest concentration of screaming kids and strollers could be found.

Every time we visit the zoo I feel more and more sorry for the dolphins. They have the most unimaginative tank to swim around in. There’s absolutely nothing in it – just a concrete tank for these amazingly intelligent creatures. It feels cruel and I waver between loving seeing the animals to hating that my patronage pays for them to have such unfulfilling lives. Anyway…

We skipped the section that has the red pandas because it’s $3 to get in and more likely than not they’d be asleep. Plus my friend went recently and they don’t really have an exhibit that’s conducive to photography.

I was happy to get a photo of an animal I’ve never seen before called Prevost’s Squirrel. Isn’t it cute?

Prevost's Squirrel

I also got a decent photo of the snow leopard with his eyes open!

Leopard

My favorite section of the zoo is the giraffe exhibit because it’s huge and I love how quiet and gentle the giraffes are. I could watch them for hours. This one was cracking me up with his long tongue.

Giraffe

I don’t remember there being pelicans at the zoo before but there was a whole group of them by the pond near the south entrance.

Pelican

Despite wanting to take our time and enjoy the weather, we couldn’t help but be done with the place in two hours. I think next time we’ll try arriving at 2 pm to see if that goes any better. Maybe by then a lot of people, particularly school groups, will be heading home.

Or maybe the zoo could consider having an adults only day? Yea, I know, it will never happen because it wouldn’t be very profitable. But boy would it be nice not to have little kids running into me and almost getting mowed down by strollers. Plus adults go stupid when they’re with their kids. How else can you explain all the grown people standing directly in front of the doors to the restrooms blocking foot traffic?
