Friday

Well that was an interesting break, even if it didn’t last as long as I said it would! I missed reading blogs a bit, but I noticed time went by slower when I wasn’t online. I think from now on I’m going to read less blogs and spend more time with hobbies and whatnot. I’ll probably still go online every day, but maybe not for hours at a time.

Friday after work we went to Wendy’s for a quick bite to eat before going for a bike ride. We didn’t go nearly as far as last time; I think after work is probably a bad time because we’re tired from working all day. We’ll probably have to go early on a Saturday or Sunday from now on. To make the trip worthwhile, we walked around Herrick Lake for a bit watching the cute chipmunks run around. They are way cuter than squirrels but less trusting of humans.

Afterwards we stopped at Petsmart to look at the animals. I swear I am addicted to that place. I go there far too often even though I have no real reason to be there. If I had the time and space, I’d probably own a ton of animals. I really like the fire-bellied toads and fancy goldfish. I even wouldn’t mind a dog at some point. Cats are a given, of course.

On the way back home we stopped at Portillo’s to get a chocolate shake. I’m really not big on shakes but for some reason I just had a taste for one. You should see how long the drive-thru gets! They have people coming to your car to take your order and collect payment so that by the time you make it to the window they just hand you the food. I could only imagine how hellish the wait would be if they didn’t do that. As it was we waited 10 minutes for our shakes. Not that I cared. It was a beautiful evening and we had nothing pressing to get home to. In fact, I think all we did when we got home was watch a bunch of shows we had DVR’d to make space for all the season premieres this week.

That little sneak

In the evenings I will let Peanut run around in her hamster ball before and/or after I put her in the playpen and take lots of cute photos of her. Well tonight I was burning some cds when I went to check on her and the little shit was in the guest bathroom running around free. She knew she was busted too because she kept running behind the toilet and avoiding me. I have to hand it to her for escaping, but I am so glad it didn’t happen when she was in the living room or something or it would have been a lot harder to get a hold of her.

Hamster

Peek-a-boo Meet the new addition to our family. Or our only one if we’re talking about pets. She’s a short-haired Syrian hamster we got at PetSmart this evening.

I had been thinking about getting a hamster for awhile. I had two dwarfs, Zoey and Chloe, years ago before I met Joe, but never a Syrian before. We had contemplated getting a hedgehog but they were pretty expensive and not really fluffy, although very cute! We stopped at PetSmart tonight (after buying some blinds at Lowes) just to look (I’ve been just looking for weeks) and she was so cute, I had to have her. She is very energetic and aware of her surroundings which is more than I can say for my other hamsters. She’s a greyish/brown color which doesn’t translate well to film with flash, but eventually I’ll get some better photos of her. For someone who wasn’t exactly thrilled about the idea, Joe sure likes watching her. Hehehe, I knew he would. I still have cage cleaning duty, however. That’s ok. She may not be a cat, but she’s fluffy, so she will do for now until I can get some kitties. Now I just need to give her a name. :)

Update: We decided to name her Peanut.

Milwaukee day trip

This is how you know that you a) aren’t that fond of the general public and b) are a homebody at heart. We went to Milwaukee today and were back home by 2 pm. The funny thing is we only spent about two hours at the zoo.

Traffic sucked since we got caught in the morning rush hour going out there, but we were expecting that. We were a bit shocked at just how many people were at the zoo on a Monday morning though. Don’t these people have jobs/school? And the field trips, oh the field trips full of screaming children! I don’t remember going on field trips so late in the year. Joe brought up the fact that schools usually contact a zoo when a group is coming, so I wonder if they’d give out that info? If so, next time I am calling first to see how many groups they are expecting. Not that there will be a next time anytime soon. This was our third trip to Milwaukee Zoo and it seems to shrink every time we go there. I’m sure it’s only a matter of perception since we’re familiar with the layout. I really liked what they did to the Big Cats exhibit, however. Last time we were there it was being renovated so I was excited to see the results and it didn’t disappoint. You can get really close to all the big cats as well as the adorable red pandas. I just wish they used anti-reflective coating on the exhibit glass. I didn’t have any luck getting a good shot of the tiger outside even though he was mere feet away. :p

After the zoo we had lunch at Kopps. Their burgers were rated #1 this year in the City’s Best on AOL Citysearch. My cheeseburger was pretty good, but definitely not the best I’ve had, and their fries were just crap. Normally fries are like pizza, good even when they’re not, but these were sooo bad: soggy and flavorless. I was tempted to go across the street to the McDonald’s just to get some fries. Joe had a chocolate shake and that was nothing to write home about either. Despite that, I enjoyed trying something new. It’s always an adventure.

On the way home we stopped at the famous Mars’ Cheese Castle (seen on the Food Network) and bought some cheese curds and chocolate cheese. I haven’t tried either yet, so I’ll get back to you on those.

Lost Gosling

Gosling up close When we were leaving the house this afternoon to go grocery shopping, Joe spotted this little guy hanging out by a tree next to our driveway. He was all by himself looking lost and scared and kept making this little chirping noise. Joe put on some gloves and I helped him round the little gosling into a box. Figuring he couldn’t have wandered too far from his group, we took him across the way to the golf course. We dropped him off at the edge of a pond nearby other geese and their babies. I hope he finds his family.
