Zoos

Last Saturday, the 12th, was a beautiful day in Chicagoland. Joe’s son was playing in a band competition so we started off the morning trying a new restaurant called Stacked near his high school. After much deliberation, I decided to order the banana bread french toast which was amazing. Seriously, it was so rich and filling that I couldn’t finish it and took a whole slice (the dish comes with three) home. It came topped with fresh bananas and a side of some seriously mouthwatering honey cream cheese. It was the perfect fuel to get through sitting in the high school for two hours.

Lamb

Later that afternoon we stopped at Cosley Zoo to check out the new lamb(s) and renew our membership. We don’t necessarily visit the zoo enough in one year to recoup the membership cost but that’s where their reciprocal agreement comes in. This year we plan to visit Des Moines’ Blank Park Zoo where we’ll get free admission (a $22 savings) and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo (a $15 savings) so after paying $59 we’ve already recouped $37. We only have to visit Cosley Zoo three times in a year (@ $3 per person) to fully recoup the cost of membership and that’s if we don’t end up visiting one of the zoos in Wisconsin at all since one trip to Milwaukee County Zoo would save us $28.50 and one trip to Racine Zoo would save us $8.00 (it’s a very small zoo). Honestly, if you live in the Chicago burbs and like visiting zoos you should really buy a membership from Cosley instead of the one from Brookfield Zoo (unless, of course, you prefer visting Brookfield but I’ve been going there since I was a toddler so it’s not that exciting anymore).

Worst Week Ever

Remember VH1’s Best Week ever series? Well, I present to you, Nicole & Joe’s Worst Week Ever. More like worst two weeks ever. Here’s a timeline for you:

Sunday, February 23rd – we purchase a baby rat from Petco

Monday, February 24th – Nougat dies out of the blue

Saturday, March 1st – we go to the Shedd Aquarium but it wasn’t as fun as expected

Sunday, March 2nd – Joe gets into a car accident while driving E home in the morning

Sunday, March 2nd – Hershey starts breathing heavily

Monday, March 3rd – Hershey dies

Tuesday, March 4th – the sink starts leaking

Thursday, March 6th – we find out E has to have an MRI

Can it please stop now?

So the bad news is the driver who caused the accident wasn’t insured so we are responsible for the $1000 deductible to have Joe’s SUV fixed. Even though they were going relatively slowly on the expressway (coming out of a tollbooth), the airbags deployed and the whole front end of the SUV was damaged because the guy who lost control flew into Joe’s lane and he couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting him. Luckily they didn’t total out the car (and damn, based on what it’s going to fix the SUV, I think it came really close) or we’d really be screwed. We don’t want, nor need, to add car payments to our monthly bills right now. We’re the type of people who drive our cars until there’s no drive left in them. We just paid off the SUV in January 2013 so we were looking forward to at least five, if not ten years of life out of the vehicle. I still have my 2000 Jetta for goodness sakes! So that’s a relief.

As far as E is concerned, we aren’t sure what’s going on but the doctor might just be acting overly cautious. We hope to hear more by this weekend but we don’t think it as serious as having an MRI implies.

As for the pet situation, I am very angry with myself. I feel guilty as hell for Hershey’s death. I took Nougat and Hershey with me to the vet who examined the new baby rat. He felt that Nougat’s passing was a coincidence, but said that Hershey likely caught a respiratory infection from the new rat that was a new strain he hadn’t been exposed to and it just took him down fast (no vet was open on Sunday so I had planned to take him in on Monday but he passed away overnight). Basically I inadvertently killed Hershey due to my own ignorance. And here I was trying to help him by getting him a buddy!

RIP Hershey
Hershey on the Windowsill

Apparently I should have quarantined the new rat better by keeping him in an entirely different room on the opposite side of the house for at least two weeks before putting him anywhere near Hershey. It didn’t occur to me how easily these infections could get into the air supply. I wonder if perhaps Winston would have lived longer had I not brought Hershey home almost eight months ago. Ugh. Poor Hershey didn’t even get to see his first birthday. He was the first rat I raised from a baby. He was so scared/shy when I first got him and so friendly before he passed. He’d sit in the corner of the room when out of his cage, but if I turned around to make eye contact with him he’d come running over and hop on my lap. I’m going to miss him. :(

Oh, and don’t get me started on how expensive it is to take a pocket pet to the vet. My bill was $175!!! The breakdown was: $19 to cremate Nougat, $19 to cremate Hershey, $58 for the baby rat to be examined, and $79 for medicine for the baby rat. I cannot believe it. I knew it was going to be a pretty penny but I was thinking closer to $100, not almost $200!!! Ugh. This has been a very expensive two weeks, let me tell you.

This past work week was tough, too, since we only have one car. Joe dropped me off at 6:15 am and I’d work until he came and got me at 4:15, only taking a half hour break during the day. Sure, we could use that extra money, but I noticed by 2 pm I felt exhausted. It really isn’t healthy to work so many hours in one day regardless of what you do (and my job is easy).

As for the sink, it will be an easy fix. It was just another thing in the long line of misfortunes this week. I’m only hoping we’re done with the bad luck and will get a run of good luck next. We could use it with Joe’s impending layoff looming on the horizon.

P.S. I’ll write a separate post soon about our Shedd Aquarium visit.

Staycation – July 2013

Last week was our week-long staycation with E. With me not working we had to mind our budget but I think we did pretty good all things considered.

Amur Tiger

Monday we drove up to Milwaukee Zoo since E has never been there and I’ve been wanting to visit again. We expected to pay parking and admission for E since we get in free with our Cosley Zoo membership, but they only asked us to pay for parking which was nice. We packed a lunch which we enjoyed after walking around the zoo for two and a half hours. I have mixed feelings about the zoo because some of the exhibits I absolutely love, like the big cats, and some I find boring, like the gorillas and the indoor penguin exhibit (the outdoor one is nice, though). Here’s the photoset from the zoo.

Cellular One Field

Tuesday we had breakfast at a nearby restaurant because I was craving eggs benedict and rented A Good Day to Die Hard from Redbox. Holy crap was that movie bad! I mean bad as in not good. At all. Seriously, Bruce Willis should be ashamed to have been a part of it. I completely lost interest in it within the first twenty minutes. I love the Die Hard franchise and even enjoyed the previous one with Justin Long in it but this one was awful. Anyway, that evening we attended a White Sox game courtesy of a vendor Joe knows through work who has season tickets. Included in the package was a parking pass which allowed us access to the lot directly across from the gate. Talk about being pampered! I guess that’s how the rich live. *sigh* Since it was a holiday week they were running a special that included discounted food ($1 hot dogs, $2 popcorn, etc) so we got lots of eats, and hot chocolate since it dipped down into the 50’s during the course of the evening, and came out only $25 poorer. You can’t beat $25 for a major league baseball game with great seats and parking!

Wednesday we braved the crowds at Enchanted Castle which is an arcade and indoor amusement park. It wasn’t originally on our itinerary but the week before there was a Groupon I snagged for $26 which included 4 rolls of tokens, 4 rides, and two personal pizzas which based on the register total before the Groupon was applied would normally cost $53. I figured we’d just have to fork over a little extra cash for me to participate and it turns out that was only $6.25 more so I could play Laser Tag because a camp counselor was leaving and gave me his ride ticket for their go-karts. The go-karts were surprisingly fast but difficult to steer. Laser Tag, however, was a lot of fun even though my vest wasn’t working the first three minutes of the game. Despite the malfunction I got the same number of kills as Joe and our team won! This was only the second time I’ve ever played laser tag and while I prefer the two-level playing field at WhirlyBall, I still really enjoyed the experience.

Fireworks in Wheaton

Wednesday evening we drove to nearby Wheaton to watch their fireworks display which was mediocre at best but better than nothing. I think our town puts on a much better fireworks show but E never gets to see it because they do theirs during their Summerfest with a short 10 minute show on a Wednesday night and a longer one that following Sunday night.

Thursday we spent the morning and early afternoon just hanging out at home and then went to my parents’ to celebrate 4th of July. I was surprised at how many people were blowing off fireworks in their neighborhood. Check out the video. You wouldn’t think they were illegal in Illinois from all that racket!

Wrigley Field Sign

Friday we took the train (the blue line, to be exact) into Chicago. We debated whether to take the L all the way into the Loop and then switch to the red line and take it back up to Addison so E could see Wrigley Field, but I realized it would be quicker to get off the L at Addison and take the bus toward the lake. From Wrigley we walked south and stopped at Soupbox for lunch (thanks to another perfectly timed Groupon).

Lincoln Park Zoo Panorama

After lunch we ended up walking to Lincoln Park Zoo but we didn’t stay long because it was ridiculously crowded thanks to the beautiful weather (and the fact that it’s free and was the day after a holiday so more people than usual were off work). From the zoo we walked to the brown line and took that around the Loop so E could see the city up close and then we switched to the blue line to take it back north to where we had left the car at a park and ride lot. We ended up ordering pizza for dinner from Joe’s favorite place (aptly named Joseph’s).

Navy Pier Flags

Saturday‘s plan was to visit the Shedd Aquarium but as it turned out, in true Chicago fashion something was going on in the city and the meters where we like to park were unavailable after noon which meant we’d either have to seek parking elsewhere or resign ourselves to a quick visit to ensure we got back to the car before getting towed. Considering the projected cost of the visit (nearly $60 and that was with Joe and my general admission being free under Bank of America’s Museum on Us program), we decided it would be best to save that visit for later in the year when it was too cold outside to do much.

Swings at Navy Pier

Not wanting to head back home after driving all the way into the city, we found ourselves at Navy Pier which I’m just going to say for the record is not all that. In fact I think it’s one big, boring tourist trap. Seriously, unless you want to blow $100 going on two rides (ferris wheel and swings, and if you’re a kid, a carousel), playing their so-called Chicago-themed miniature golf (which merely have a Chicago-themed sign at each hole; otherwise it’s just a very plain nondescript course), stuffing your face full of over-priced food, or seeing an IMAX movie on their disappointing IMAX movie screen (been there, done that), there’s not much to do if you’re watching your budget. We walked around the entire area, however, trying in vein to feel like paying $25 just to park was worth it. We ended up having some gelato before giving up and heading back home. We stopped for burgers at Hamburger Heaven in Elmhurst for lunch on the way home and then went swimming at our pool.

I did the math and we spent just under $300 for the week. That included any eating out we did as well as all the gas to get around. It’s amazing to me how quickly things add up but it’s worth it if E enjoyed himself which he seemed to do, although ironically the cheaper things seemed to be more enjoyable (like playing with sparklers at my parents’ and going to the baseball game).

Oh, and here’s a weird thing that happened that week: we were on the blue line on Friday when we saw an unusual couple – a very old man with a very young Asian woman in a neon & black spandex dress. We joked he was bringing home his mail order bride since they were coming from O’Hare airport. We didn’t think much more of them until the next day when we were driving into the city and E spotted the same couple, wearing the same exact outfits from the day before, standing on a street corner waiting to cross! What are the chances of THAT? So now I want to know if there was a glitch in The Matrix or what. And I’m still curious if she really is a mail order bride and whether she owns any other outfits. It was just freaky.

Zoo

Giraffes

Saturday we took E to Brookfield Zoo after scoring free admission passes, including tickets to the dolphin show, from a friend I made through the cat rescue I work with. I took a lot of pictures of the giraffes because Brookfield has the largest collection I’ve ever seen. Plus they were really cute and inquisitive about the tortoises that share their habitat.

Giraffe investigating tortoise

The dolphin show sucked. It wasn’t anything like I remember when I was a kid, not to mention it was only 20 minutes long. They used to jump out of the water much higher and often than they do now. Had we wasted $4 per person for tickets I would have been pissed. I also wasn’t too happy about the fact that the only way to see the zoo’s lemurs is to pay extra to enter their children’s zoo, although we opted not to as it’s $3.50 per person and lemurs aren’t that exciting.

Look, I understand the zoo needs to make money to update their exhibits and care for the animals, but at some point it just feels like they are nickel and dime-ing the public. Next thing you know there will be a fee to enter Tropic World Asia, and that will be the last time I ever see the gorillas. They look bored out of their minds which is painful to witness as it is.

Joe’s sister came over for dinner that evening and Bella had a great time running around with Winston and licking him. He wasn’t phased by her at all and she wasn’t scared of him like she was with the cats or our hamster, Nougat. It was really cute how excited she got being able to play with him. Winston is very friendly with everyone he meets and I’m glad we adopted him.

End of July

Last Sunday we visited Joe’s brother and sister-in-law. We haven’t been to his place in years even though it’s only an hour and a half drive because a) all the other times we’ve visited I got ill (I think it was the water out there) and b) we were (incorrectly, we learned) under the impression the best day to visit was a Sunday and we don’t usually have the kids and have to work the next day so it wasn’t convenient. Joe took this past week off, and I took Monday and Tuesday off, since we had E for the entire week, so it worked out perfectly. We got there around 11 am and bullshitted for awhile, then my brother-in-law’s friend came by and took us out on the lake in his pontoon boat. E got to drive the boat, which he loved (and which made me nervous at first but he quickly got the hang of it). After that he went out on the tube and we pulled him with the boat. Then BIL’s friend was tired so we went back to the house and had a nice big meal of steak, baked potatoes, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato salad, cucumber salad, etc. We played Uno Attack afterwards and ended up leaving sometime after 8 pm.

We slept in on Monday and didn’t do much but run a few errands (I scored a nice case for my Kindle at Half Price Books for only $4.79) and Tuesday we went to see Ice Age 4 which I thought was pretty good. I went back to work on Wednesday, which sucked, but Joe and E came by and took me out to lunch which was nice. We went to Meatheads because they have the best patty melt ever. I like to get mine without onions and a side of thousand island dressing. Then we went across the street to Red Mango which has the BEST frozen yogurt. I had the vanilla bean with chocolate chips and fresh strawberries and blueberries. Thursday and Friday was work and Joe and E had their pool time and went to some garage sales. Then E left Friday afternoon before I got off work.

Today we went out to Whiting, Indiana for the Pierogi Festival. We stopped at my parents’ house to pick up my brothers. We walked around the fest for nearly three hours and enjoyed lots of food. In addition to the headlining pierogis we shared some of the following: chocolate covered bacon, chocolate covered banana, deep-fried cannoli, chocolate filled churro, fried chicken on a stick, polish sausage, ice cream and more. We were total gluttons but it was so much fun and we met a nice family with a last name of Kielbasa. The boy was munching on a polish sausage and said, “I’m eating my own kind!” You’d think after leaving the fest everyone would be stuffed but the “boys” (that includes my husband) all stopped at Speedway and got massive slurpees. Where do they store all that junk? I passed on that, but you have to admit, 69 cents for a 44 oz slurpee is pretty awesome.
