My recommendation if you live in Illinois – do not subscribe to Outdoor Illinois magazine. I mistakenly thought it would provide tips on locating native wildlife; which it does if your ultimate goal is killing the animals you find. I think the title of the magazine is misleading and should be renamed Illinois Hunter since hunting is the magazine’s primary focus and the articles that aren’t about how to trick those oh-so-clever deer so you can put a bullet in their head are as boring as can be. That was definitely a waste of my $10.

Woo hoo, the Cubs win the NL Central Division title! I’m shocked, yet happy. It’s always nice to see a Chicago team do well.
Groundhog Day
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
I’m not sure, but we came across one of these creatures yesterday on our walk. I didn’t even know they lived in Illinois because I had never seen one before. I had a feeling it was a woodchuck (aka groundhog) when I saw it, but wasn’t positive.
Anyway … we slowly approached the woodchuck who was going about his business of chewing on the grass and not until we were within fifty feet of it did he even notice us. He froze and lifted his head so we ceased speaking. I got the feeling that woodchucks, or at least this one in particular, have very poor eyesight. After we stood motionless and quiet for awhile, the woodchuck went back to his business until we moved in a bit closer and he ran off.
After we had been walking for a bit, Joe suddenly yelled, “He’s coming straight for us!” and started to run, so silly me joined him until I realized he was yanking my chain. Like a woodchuck was going to maul me. Joe is such a punk!
It’s too bad I don’t have a small camera to carry around with me at all times because I’d have a picture of the woodchuck to share with you. Christmas is only a few months away, though, and someone owes me after making me think a woodchuck wanted to kill me. *Hint* *Hint*
Darkness
Oh man, I have goosebumps right now. I had the windows open because it was beautiful today, but suddenly it was cold in here. Then I noticed that it’s almost dark outside. Ugh. Just another reminder of how winter will be here before we know it. I so hate it! The cold is bad enough … but the fact that it gets dark so early is the absolute worst. I don’t know how those people in parts of Alaska* do it.
* I read there’s a part of Alaska where it’s light for six months straight and dark for the other six. Creepy.
Weekend in review
Man, we were so busy this weekend, but we had a bunch of fun, so it’s good.
Friday we stopped at Blockbuster for a movie (Shanghi Knights, which wasn’t very good) before stopping at Joe’s friend’s house to get some cable tools. Afterwards, we went to Circuit City to pick up the APC UPS we had ordered online for my brother’s computer. I’d like to know how Circuit City thinks their current “Express Pickup” procedure is actually express when it’s anything but. Instead of going straight to Merchandise Pickup, the logical place you’d go, we were told to first stop by the Customer Service counter. The same counter that typically has a line of people returning items. Oh yea, that’s express – not! Only after they checked our printed receipt and I.D. were we allowed to actually pick up our merchandise. Ridiculous! The only reason we purchased online in the first place was to get the sweet $20 rebate which made the final price only $20. Too bad the rebates were one per person, per household, or I would have got another one for us.
