My Birthday

My 34th birthday was a week ago and I’ve gotten so used to not being able to take my birthday off from work that even though this was the first time in years I could have taken a vacation day, I didn’t bother. My reasoning was that a) it was cold and crappy outside anyway and b) I’d just have to go back to work on Friday and work even harder to get caught up from losing a day. So not worth it.

I started reconsidering that decision when I learned we were getting hit with some snow Wednesday evening into Thursday, but Joe and I decided he’d just drive me to work since the Escape has four wheel drive.

While I was in the shower he put two gifts on the sink that I discovered as I was drying off.

Inside were two very pretty necklaces. One is a sterling silver heart and the other is purple cubic zirconium shaped like a flower. I wore the purple one into work as I just so happened to have chosen to wear an outfit that matched.

After work we stopped at Blockbuster to rent a movie (Away We Go, which was not very good) and pick up a pizza from Lou Malnati’s. With the crazy weather I wasn’t up for a dinner at a restaurant.

After the movie I opened my presents.

Birthday Presents

I’m pretty disappointed with the CDs. It’s not Joe’s fault; I had them on my Amazon wish list. I just don’t know what I was thinking with The Cure tribute album as most of the songs are terrible. As for the Fatboy Slim CD, we both thought it was the same concert as the DVD we own, but it’s not. So that sucks.

Also one of my iPhone cases doesn’t fit quite right, but I contacted the manufacturer and they are willing to send me a replacement so that’s good. I really love iFrogz! I was thinking about buying a case from them for my iPod, but I’d rather have this skin instead.

I’m pretty excited about my DVD even though I haven’t gotten around to opening it just yet. I used to love The State so many years ago. I remember watching it at my grandparents’ house since my parents never had cable. Maybe I’ll check it out this weekend since we’re kid/plans free. We’re doing dinner and BINGO with friends tomorrow night, but Saturday and Sunday are wide open.

Nothing much

So I’m slowly getting through my list of things to get accomplished this week. Today was a trip to the DMV to renew my driver’s license. It was the most pleasant DMV experience ever, probably because it was at an express facility in Wheaton that staffs people who are actually nice. Imagine that! I’ve got a shiny new license with my best pic ever now.

We’ve watched four movies so far during our time off – Yes Man, Couples Retreat, District 9, and 500 Days Of Summer. All were enjoyable except that last one. Couples Retreat was seen at a newish second run theatre nearby that we hadn’t tried yet. Admission is $1.75 but on Tuesdays it’s only $1. Score! I wrote a review on Yelp.

I’ve read about half the People magazines and cleared a decent chunk of shows off the DVR. I’ve not done any cleaning except laundry even though the bathrooms need it. I want to give the rats a bath, except I don’t, because I am feeling really lazy right now, which means I should probably do it now before I get even lazier!

We didn’t put up the tree after all and don’t plan on it. We also decided not to exchange gifts. I feel the time off slipping through my fingers and it sucks! How can a day of mostly nothing go by so damn fast?!? :(

Weekend Highlights

My Best Friend’s Girl – Dane Cook may not be a great actor, but his character in this movie was thoroughly entertaining. I could do without ever seeing Jason Biggs again, however. There’s something about that guy that just bugs me.

He’s Just Not That Into You – Joe wasn’t too happy that I wanted to see it, but I agreed to suffer through the new Star Trek movie in exchange. I thought it was good. I love Justin Long and Ginnifer Goodwin was really cute in this movie. Bonus – a Cure song in the credits. :)

Kielbasa! – How silly are we that we got super excited today when we stopped at a local Butera just for the hell of it to look for the extremely hard to find Butterball Turkey Kielbasa and they actually had some!? I really wasn’t expecting that!

Wingtown – Stopped for lunch at this place today and really enjoyed it. Review up on Yelp!

Weekend Snippets

Yesterday we took the kids to a matinee. We split up and Joe took his daughter to see Twilight while I took his son to see Bolt. Personally, I think Joe got the bum deal since Bolt was fantastic. I didn’t even mind it being in 3-D even thought the glasses aren’t very comfortable.

After the movies we stopped at the produce market and got all sorts of yummy food for lunch, including meats and cheese from the deli. Add to that the taco bar leftovers from Friday night’s dinner, and the leftover spaghetti and meatballs from last night’s dinner, and we’ve got plenty of food for the next couple of days. That means yours truly doesn’t have to cook!

Target has some real comfy pajama pants on sale for $9.99 and since I’ve been hanging on to a few pairs of mine with holes, I took advantage and bought a pair on Friday. Now I can throw the ratty ones out. Unfortunately, I forgot to get another pair while there this morning so I guess I’ll be stopping on the way home from work this week. I also forgot to refill my prescriptions because I am very disorganized lately, so at least the extra trip will be productive.

My curling iron broke the other day so I priced them at Walmart. The one I liked was $25 which seemed a bit high, so I decided to look elsewhere. I recalled buying one for a good price at Ulta a few years ago so we stopped there and sure enough, the same one I liked at Walmart was $16.49 according to the tag. Even better, it rang up $10.99 at the register and I had a coupon for $3.50 off any item $10 or more so after tax it was $8.04. Man, do I love a good deal!
