Well folks, I am officially in the market for another camera. Yes, you read that correctly. But no, I’m not replacing the 20D.
I just want something to carry around that’s better than my cruddy 2-megapixel Nikon 2100. It suffers from poor macro focusing, not to mention it has crappy zoom and eats batteries. I definitely want something more robust, but small enough to fit in a purse, to take along on all outings, especially when we’re at the Disney parks where I don’t want to be lugging a huge camera and lens on the rides.
I’ve checked some reviews of the current 4-megapixel cameras out there as I don’t want to go over $250. Right now the camera I’m leaning towards is the Canon Powershot A520 due to it’s size, picture quality, zoom, and battery life.
So here’s my criteria, in case you have any suggestions:
- Price range: Up to $250
- Megapixels: 4+
- Storage: Any except memory stick, although CF is preferred
- Battery type: Anything, as long as it is rechargeable and doesn’t suck them dry like my Nikon does
- Lens type: A decent optical zoom (no fixed lens)
- Size: Something fairly small so I can carry it anywhere with ease
Is that too demanding and unrealistic?
I think the Powershots are great. I’ve had a G3 for a long time which I love (probably a little bigger than what you want) and my mom has the A80 which is smaller and takes excellent photos.
I’ve got a Powershot S410, 3MP, and I like it. It’s small, fast enough, the pictures turn out decent. The macro focusing never gives me a problem. You’re probably on the right track with the A520.
… and I know you hate Sony, but I still LOVE my Cybershot DSC-707! ;-)
