Wisconsin Dells

Thursday we left the house around 9:30-ish so we’d “miss” the morning rush-hour traffic. We made it to the Dells around 12:30 pm just as we anticipated.

We located our hotel just so we knew where it was but it was too early to check-in, so we rode around the area scoping out where everything was. The first thing we did was play 18-holes of miniature golf at Pirate Cove’s Golf. We hiked up to the hardest course, Pirates Challenge 18, and enjoyed the sunshine while working up an appetite.

After golf we headed to the downtown area to find a place to eat. I had read about how good the burgers were at a place called Monk’s, but we got really poor service and didn’t end up eating there. I gave them a lovely review over at Yelp if you’re interested. Instead we ate at Sharky’s Sports Bar and Grill. The food was your typical bar fare but at least we were waited on promptly. Plus they had a dart board with which we occupied ourselves while waiting for our food.

After lunch we walked around the downtown area for a little bit but there’s only so many t-shirt stores (it seemed as if they sold nothing but clothing that said Wisconsin Dells on it) and candy shops one can take, so we made a pit-stop at Walgreens to pick up some snacks and then headed back to the hotel to check-in.

The hotel I chose, the Hilton Garden Inn, was a good pick. Not only was it very clean and modern, the rate was reasonable ($99/night) and since it doesn’t have an indoor waterpark, it wasn’t overflowing with kids. Our room had a king bed, fridge, microwave, and a desk with a complimentary high-speed internet access. The alarm clock had a line-in which allowed us to listen to our iPods which was nice touch. The bathroom was very clean and bright. Inside was a sink with a granite counter-top and a shower with more than adequate water pressure. Complimentary Shampoo, conditioner, mouth wash and lotion were provided. My only complaint was the lack of fan in the bathroom. Otherwise this was one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in.

I got online at the hotel to scope out places to eat and we decided on Buffalo Phil’s Grille which turned out to be really good (their coleslaw is the best I’ve ever had) and in retrospect the best place we ate at during our stay. Before dinner we checked out the attached place called Knuckleheads Bowling and Family Entertainment Center. In addition to the bowling, Knuckleheads has pool tables, air hockey, go-karts, small rides for the youngsters, and an arcade. We played air hockey, skee-ball and some other games before dinner and afterwards played a few more games including Deal or No Deal and a Lord of the Rings version of a pinball game. I’m not a fan of LOTR but I do love pinball machines. In addition to the pool, air hockey and poker tables I plan to have in the game room of my dream house, I would like a pinball machine.

The restaurant and amusement center are located directly in front of Tanger Outlet Center so we headed over there before they closed because I wanted to check out the Old Navy store. What a disappointment! There’s nothing outlet about their prices. I saw no better deals than at the regular Old Navy store at home. It’s official – I’m completely over outlets and won’t bother ever shopping at one again.

Cure Concert

What a fantastic show (not that I expected anything less)! 3 hours of Cure-filled goodness.

Here’s the setlist. I bolded the songs I enjoyed.

Plainsong, Prayers For Rain, alt.end, A Night Like This, The Walk, The End of the World, Lovesong, Pictures of You, Lullaby, The Perfect Boy, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Hot Hot Hot, Sleep When I’m Dead, Push, Friday I’m in Love, Inbetween Days, Just Like Heaven, Primary, Never Enough, The Only One, Wrong Number, One Hundred Years, Disintegration

1st encore: If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, The Kiss
2nd encore: Lovecats, Freakshow, Close To Me, Why Can’t I Be You?
3rd encore: Boys Don’t Cry, Jumping Someone Else’s Train, Grinding Halt, 10:15 Saturday Night, Killing An Arab.

Total = 34 songs.

Once again, I got screwed out of my Seventeen Seconds encore, but more on that later.

I was peeved on the way to the venue after seeing this, but once we got there and I saw where our seats were, I quickly got over it. For some reason I thought we were higher up and further back than we actually ended up. Our line of sight was quite excellent (other than the red-head who danced the whole time a few rows ahead, but I ended up sliding over to the empty seat on my left so I could still see Robert). We were close to the aisle too which made my frequent trips to the bathroom easier. I also gave into the evil that is Allstate Arena concessions and got a $4.50 bottle of water (which they put in a plastic cup, thus being even more wasteful) and $3.75 pretzel.

Oh and before I forget to document this, it is fucking FREEZING inside the arena. I almost felt sorry for the hootchie girls in their tank tops and capris, but not really. Who wears heels to a concert? Seriously. I had on jeans and my beloved Let’s Go To Bed t-shirt that Joe bought me when we were first dating after I lamented how I hesitated buying it from The Clubhouse the one time I saw it and the next time I went there it was gone. I’m not sure I’ve ever actually worn a Cure shirt to a Cure concert before so that was kinda cool. But I digress.

Even though dear Robert did NOT play my favorite song in the whole world, A Forest, which he played at the majority of the other shows, I still really enjoyed myself, particularly when a group of their faster more pop-like songs began with Friday I’m In Love. First off, the hearts from the single’s cover that spun around on the screens were so cute and they seemed to dance along to the music. Secondly, everyone was singing along even more so than any other Cure show I’ve been to (and this marks #5). The energy was just amazing! Check out this video someone posted over at YouTube.

That being said, I was a little disappointed in the second half of the show. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good, just not as good as the first half. Plus Robert completely butchered Disintegration. I mean, it was god awful. Clearly the worst song of the night and I love love love that song! After the song Robert said some words to the effect of something being “fucking awful” but I can’t make out a word that man says so I’m not sure if he was referring to the song or his voice since I read that he was having vocal problems. Wrong Number wasn’t too hot either and I don’t know why he seems to always play If Only Tonight We Could Sleep because that is one of my least favorite songs of the band’s and didn’t they realize I was there? ;)

The encores were a bit disappointing too as I was hoping for the classic Seventeen Seconds lineup – Play For Today, M, and my beloved aforementioned A Forest. I don’t get all the hub-bub over Lovecats but I seemed to be the only one as the audience went ape-shit over it. Once they got to the third and final encore, which were songs from Three Imaginary Boys and Boys Don’t Cry, I knew I wasn’t going to get my wish. Jumping Someone Else’s Train was pretty bad-ass, though!

Despite my moments of “what the fuck?” and slight disappointment, I’d still say it was an amazing show. The light effects alone were awesome and really tied well to the music. Their playing was impressive considering they no longer have a keyboard player. I love The Cure live and as long as they keep playing, I’ll keep paying Ticketbastard insane prices to see them.

Side note: We managed to avoid the hour-long trying to get the fuck out of the parking lot fiasco by parking in the back away from where everyone else was directed to park. I believe everyone used the South entrance while we used the North. I made my last trip to the bathroom during 10:15 Saturday Night and we stood in the concourse to listen to Killing An Arab. Once Robert said goodnight, we high-tailed it out of there and were one of the first cars out of the lot, nearly behind what we think might have been The Cure’s tour bus! It had a police escort and was headed to the airport so I can’t imagine who else it was. If it was in fact them, I’m impressed with how quickly they got out of there.

Wake me up

Last night we both went to bed at 10:30 pm since we were completely wiped out. It wasn’t a particularly hard week at work so I don’t know what that was about. I slept until 8 am this morning yet I’m still super sleepy. I’m tempted take a nap before the concert but I fear I’ll just wake up even groggier. I’m not a good nap-taker so I’m just going to have to deal. Cure concert starts in less than three hours. I hope I can handle 3-4 hours on my feet feeling like this. I might just pop an Excedrin migraine in order to get a jolt of caffeine.

Quick bites

No time to elaborate for now, but…

I really need to book our hotel for next week’s little getaway. Yeesh, talk about procrastination!

I am hearing really good things about The Cure shows so far from not just fans but newspapers too. Apparently they are playing for a full three hours after the opening act. That is 35-40 songs. Sweeeet!

Uva-Ursi is an awesome herbal remedy for bladder infections, and I know this because unfortunately I have one. :(

Have you seen the new Bank of America ATMs? They recently bought our bank, LaSalle and upgraded the ATMs. They take your check without the envelope, scan it, display it on the screen with the amount for you to verify, and then print a small version of the check on the receipt. Talk about high-tech. Maybe they can make me some breakfast too.

New Media

We took the kids shopping this morning so the girl could pick out a camera for her upcoming 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. Her mother was going to buy her one but after talking to her we agreed to pick one out (since we have more experience buying cameras) and split the cost. I planned to research models online last night but it’s actually pretty difficult to find reviews on low-end digitals now that there’s a bazillion on the market with new models coming out every month.

The one we chose was just released last month, in fact. It’s an extremely vibrant Polaroid we tested at Walmart. I originally thought a Nikon would be the way to go but for the life of me even I couldn’t figure out how to change scenes on the new models. We definitely needed something more intuitive for a beginner. Plus the camera just looks fun. We also bought rechargeable batteries and a charger, a camera bag, and two 2GB SD cards so the girl can take tons of photos with her friends without worrying about running out of space.

When we got home I showed her how to load the batteries and memory card and then we went outside to practice taking pictures. Some of the photos came out blurry but some came out really good, I just can’t show you the good ones since they’re of her brother and I have a policy against posting public photos of the kids. I posted the photos I took (with my own camera) of some flowers, however. You’re welcome.

The girl was thrilled with the video option on her new camera and it must take a lot of juice because she burned through a set of regular AA’s in no time. Good thing we got rechargeable batteries for her trip, huh? Her excitement inspired me to take a few videos of Oreo. After many failed attempts she has finally figured out how to get to the top of the cage via the water bottle and I caught it “on tape”. It’s the first time I’ve ever edited a video so please be gentle if you leave a comment. I’m a video virgin.
