September Staycation

Today marks day four of our five days off from work. As I mentioned previously we were supposed to be visiting Omaha Nebraska but given Templeton’s health we couldn’t be away from home. Ironically we ended up taking him to the vet to be euthanized on Wednesday which was our last day before “vacation” because his tumor was getting to the point where it could rupture internally and cause him pain. Before I went to work that morning I changed his cage and gave him lots of treats and fresh water so he could have an enjoyable last day. I opted not to be there when they put him to sleep since I didn’t want to see him that way, but while it was nice to say our goodbyes, I felt guilty nonetheless. I realize it was the best thing to do for him but it still makes me very sad.

Other than starting our time off on such a low note, it’s been a nice few days. Thursday we planned to visit Milwaukee Zoo but my stomach was bothering me so we ended up staying near home and going to IKEA for breakfast and then to Cosley Zoo to walk around.

Extreme Chick Close-Up

Friday we headed into the city to visit the Museum of Science and Industry since it was a free day. Afterward we went to Lincoln Park Zoo and walked around enjoying the Fall weather. We made a pit-stop at Smoque for some beef brisket before heading home. We went at a nice time as there was no line whereas previously the line was out the door!

Yesterday we cleaned out Joe’s side of the garage where all the tools are kept and then brought some pizzas to my parents’ house for game night. You must play What’s Yours Like? as it’s hilarious, especially if you’ve got a dirty mind like we do.

Today has been pretty low-key. We did a little shopping and I cleaned the mice cage, gave the toad some fresh moss, and mopped the kitchen floor. It’s pretty gloomy out but at least we still have another day off before returning to work so it’s not all bad.

Fall TV

Are you ready for some football tv?

First off, here’s the shows I enjoyed last year but are no more. Yes, this is old news to many of you, but I’m just finding it out now.

Better With You
The Human Target
Mad Love
My Boys
Outsourced
V (actually I was getting sick of this one so I won’t miss it much)

I’m sad about the sitcoms because I feel like they don’t have a chance because people would rather watch crap like Toddlers and Tiaras.

There are a lot of new shows this season and most of them sound horrible. I watched the premiere of Up All Night today and I hated it. Free Agents was a bit better and I plan to give it another EP or two before declaring a verdict.

Here are the other shows I plan to DVR but I’m honestly not expecting much from any of them:

Apartment 23 (ABC)
Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea (NBC)
Bent (NBC)
I Hate My Teenage Daughter (FOX)
New Girl (FOX)
Suburgatory (ABC)
Whitney (NBC)

I’m more excited for my faves to return, most notably The Big Bang Theory, Parks & Recreation, and The Middle.

What shows are you looking forward to?

Pet Update

I have a love/hate relationship with my pet mice. I love how cute they are and they have the softest fur but I hate how messy & smelly they are and how they can’t run loose lest they poop everywhere. Plus they are constantly on the move like they are speed or something. Suffice it to say I won’t be heartbroken when they pass on, but in the meantime I will take cute photos like this.

Bernadette with a yogurt treat

Oh, did I mention how dumb they are? I gave each of them the same treat at the same time and instead of being content eating it they would drop theirs and go steal their sister’s from out of their mouth. This would of course prompt the other one to chase the thief while squeaking at her.

Templeton will be passing away soon and that makes me sad. I took him to the vet two weeks ago because he has a tumor near his tail, his feet sores aren’t healing and he continues to lose his fur. The vet confirmed that he didn’t have much time left. Poor guy. He’s been such a good little guy so I’ve been giving him extra treats and hoping to make his last weeks pleasant. So far he’s not doing too bad – he drags his back feet around a bit when he walks but he can still get around, he’s still eating like crazy and he still loves time outside of his cage. The vet said he will likely have to be euthanized which I am dreading. I hope he dies in his sleep instead because I don’t want to be the one who decides when his life is over. If he starts to suffer I will do it of course, but I don’t want to.

We were planning on taking a trip in a few weeks as we’ve scheduled a long weekend away from work but I don’t think that’s going to happen now because I can’t leave the pets alone for more than a day and I also can’t ask someone to watch them knowing Templeton could pass away at any time. And despite what a few colleagues suggested I’m not going to take him to be euthanized just so I can go on vacation.

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend was a blast! I played more video games over the span of three days than I’ve played all year combined. Friday night E and I played Guitar Hero for hours and on Sunday both my brothers came to visit and I played drums on my brother’s copy of Rock Band and Guitar Hero for the Wii. I want to get a set of drums now but they are so expensive! I can’t find anything online under $100.

Sunday morning before the boys came over we went to Target and ended up buying a Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock bundle for the Xbox360 since it was on clearance for only $40 and still sells for $80 elsewhere for the Xbox as well as other platforms. The single reason I got it? To play Fascination Street by The Cure! I had completely forgotten when they announced the game that it contained a Cure song. There are a lot of negative reviews online about this iteration of GH and I’m surprised since I like that you can play all the songs via Quick Play without having to unlock them first. It’s too bad we don’t have an internet adapter for the Xbox, though, because you can download even more songs. I guess I’ll have to add that to my wish list and hope it actually works. The PS3 connects to our router fine but the Wii absolutely refuses to connect unless we open up our network which there’s no way I’m doing. We used to just connect to our neighbor’s unsecured network (naughty, I know, but it was only to do system updates) but then he grew a brain and password-protected it (as he should).

Earlier in the day on Sunday before we played video games we spent some time at a park once we found one where there was some available space; it was super crowded at our preferred place so we had to hunt for an alternative. We had a picnic and played frisbee together, then Brother # 1 and I watched while Joe and Brother # 2 played catch with a football. We also came across this huge creepy moth.

Brother # 2 took that picture. I’ve never seen one of those before but after some Googling I’ve learned it’s a Carolina Sphinx moth.
