Employed Again

Nope not me, but Joe. He was laid off at the end of January and has been looking for work ever since. He applied to over 100 jobs and didn’t even hear back from any of them until September. Just one of the reasons it irks me when people claim no one wants to work anymore – more like no one is really hiring like they will lead you to believe! I heard it’s because then they don’t have to pay the government back for the PPP loans they were given last year. It wouldn’t surprise me, even if that’s fraud. But I digress…

Joe had a few interviews and one of them turned into an offer which he accepted. His first day was Monday, October 18th. The pay is great, the benefits are decent (the health insurance literally starts the day after the one from his previous job’s severance package expires), and the people seem nice.

The only drawback is they are disorganized and as such he’s had to work longer hours than he’d prefer, including having to work this weekend. Ugh!!! Why can’t these places get their shit together? No one wants to spend their entire life working. I really hope they hire enough people so no one has to work over 40 hours a week. I don’t care what you’re willing to pay – it’s not sustainable.

It feels weird having the house to myself again. I don’t like it as much as I thought I would. The only plus side is the place has never been cleaner. For whatever reason I don’t like cleaning when Joe is around, so there would be months where I’d only clean the bathrooms once in that time. Yuck! Now I have a weekly schedule.

I miss us not being able to go shopping weekday mornings to avoid people. We’re going to try grocery shopping tonight, in fact, since even a weekend morning is out of the question this week.

Can someone just send us a couple million dollars so we can retire? Please and thank you.

Solar Eclipse 2017

We lucked out when I ended up buying the last two pairs of solar eclipse glasses after work on Thursday at the local Jewel. Those are the ones pictured below on the top. The bottom ones were sent to me by a friend. Unfortunately they didn’t arrive until later this afternoon so it was too late to use them.

Even though it was overcast here this morning/afternoon, I was able to spot the 86% covered sun with my special glasses (as was Joe at work) occasionally throughout the eclipse event as the clouds passed over the sun so I’m pretty happy about that. NASA was airing coverage of the eclipse on C-SPAN as well.

The landscapers kind of ruined the vibe when it got all dark with their loud equipment going, however, but whatever. It was cool but not so life-shattering that I feel like I missed out by not traveling to view it elsewhere. And hey, at least I didn’t get into any trouble unlike the last time I viewed an eclipse which was in high school. I ditched my algebra class to see it and when I admitted this to the attendance office I was suspended!

One thing I found interesting were the people who later complained that it was lame. Yes, it was, if you didn’t have the special glasses because the sun was still bright in the areas that didn’t have total coverage. See this photo of the eclipse I took? LOL

iPhone News

Like all the other fan boys/girls, I eagerly awaited the announcement of the iPhone 5 today but it never came. Yes, I’m disappointed but not broken-hearted. I’m also glad they didn’t discontinue the iPod Classic because there’s nowhere else you can get that kind of storage for a decent price.

Honestly, I blame all the tech sites for posting the rumors and getting my hopes up. Looking at past releases it makes sense that this would be an upgrade instead of a full redesign. Plus for me, who has the 3GS, it’s going to be a major upgrade with the retina display, improved camera, HD video, and faster processor.

My only true disappointment is that the screen is still 3.5″. I’m not looking for a 4.3″ screen but 4″ would have been nice. I’m sure it will be in the next phone but I’m not going to wait because if you can trust history it will be at least another nine months before that happens. Plus one could play the wait game forever since it’s inevitable that a better device will be released not that long after you’ve purchased one.

I suppose I’m going to be on the upgrade schedule like their phones where I get the improved version of the latest design every two years and I’m ok with that. I just need to find out if I’d get the phone quicker by pre-ordering or standing in line at AT&T. Anyone know? I’m off work for a whole week later this month taking another staycation so I’ll have the time.

Also, iOS 5 looks great. I can’t wait for the new notification functionality. I’ve always hated how I’ll unlock my phone and get multiple pop-up screens successfully. It’s obnoxious.

In the news

Cops pay 3 a.m. visit to tell man his door is unlocked – This guy is a total moron. I hope we don’t see a follow-up article saying he is suing the police department for invasion of privacy because I will go over there and personally slap him. As far as I’m concerned he’s lucky child services wasn’t called on his dumb ass. In this day and age I think it’s very stupid to leave your doors unlocked at night. I don’t care where you live. It doesn’t take much effort to keep your home secure and you’re just inviting criminals into your home otherwise. I’ve lost count of how many horror stories I’ve read about people being murdered by someone entering into their unlocked home. Even criminals are lazy, so please, don’t be easy pray, people!

Scuba diver charged in wife’s underwater death – So how greedy does one have to be to murder their own spouse? The sad part is she never added him as sole beneficiary anyway so he murdered her for nothing! Sick fuck. Why do people still think they can get away with murder? With DNA testing and all the technology it’s much harder to get away with it.

Earthquake

I woke up this morning at 4:40 am with a start and attempted to swat Joe because the bed was swaying and it was annoying me. Except Joe wasn’t in bed; he was still downstairs from having stayed up most of the night playing games and watching tv (he has the day off from work today). I laid really still thinking maybe I somehow shook the bed, but it continued to move on it’s own accord. It was freaky.

So I jumped out of bed, met Joe on his way up the stairs (finally coming to bed), and asked him if he felt that. He had no idea what I was talking about, so I told him what happened. His response? “It was probably from a plane passing overhead”. Uh, I don’t think so, buddy. Planes pass overhead all the time and they don’t make the bed sway. So then he told me it was probably a train. Wrong again, bucko. There’s a difference between the rumbling we sometimes feel from the train and the bed moving back and forth as if something was underneath it. By this point he was exasperated with me because he just wanted to go to sleep so he told me I must have been dreaming. Grrr! I gave up and got ready for work.

The second I got to work someone asked me if I felt the earthquake. I was like, “Thank you! I knew I wasn’t nuts!” I immediately called Joe (and woke him up, muhaha) to gloat. Don’t ever insinuate I’m crazy, hon! I know when something isn’t right. And what an odd feeling that was. I can’t imagine how a big earthquake would feel. I hope to never find out.
