Quest Diagnostics & Dog Expenses

I’ve never been a fan of Quest Diagnostics, but my insurance told me it would cost me less out of pocket to get my blood drawn there than my doctor’s lab, so that’s where I went Friday morning. My doctor had forgotten to give me the order for my lab work so I picked that up earlier in the week. I didn’t really give it a good once-over until Friday morning and that’s when I noticed it didn’t include a urinalysis even though we discussed it to check for blood in my urine (a sign my interstitial cystitis is acting up). It was too early for the office to be open so I went to Quest and asked them whether it showed one on the order and they confirmed it didn’t. I asked them to take a urine sample anyway and I would just go to my doctor’s office afterwards (they are only a couple blocks away) to ask them to fax an updated order. They were agreeable to that which was nice. Everything else not so much. I mean, the man who took care of me and drew my blood was nice enough but I have a big bruise there now. He was trying to tell me it’s because of how my veins are but I’ve had blood drawn and not been bruised so I just think he’s not very good at it. The thing that threw me the most, however, was that they required my credit card beforehand. I was told it will only be charged for whatever the insurance doesn’t cover, but that just screams opportunity for being over-billed to me. But what could I do? I needed to get it done. I hope they don’t screw it up. I just don’t like Quest because the people there aren’t the friendliest, plus their offices just seem dirty to me. Not really what you want from a place handling bodily fluids, know what I mean? They didn’t even give me a towelette to clean “down there” before peeing in the cup. That’s called hygiene 101. Ugh!

After my blood draw I was going to stop at Costco since it was just down the block to grab a rotisserie chicken but I forgot they don’t open until 10 am and it was only just after 9, so I went to my doctor’s office to take care of the order mix up and then spent the next 45 minutes walking around Hobby Lobby to kill time. They have a lot of interesting decor there so I was taking photos and attaching captions to them before sending them to Joe.

Once Costco was open I got my chicken, then stopped at the vet to pick up a flea and tick preventative called Nexgard. I purchased a 6 month supply for $125 and got two months free which is great because apparently with how the weather has been the past few years it’s getting to the point where the vet recommends they are on the preventatives year round. Owning a dog, assuming you want to take good care of them, isn’t cheap!

I also finally bit the bullet and made an appointment with Fox Valley Animal Welfare League to get Wookie spayed and microchipped. After reading the FAQ on their website I’m not as concerned that she won’t receive good care. And it will cost me nearly a fourth of what the vet was going to charge – $140 vs $500. I was also informed that pre-op bloodwork isn’t necessary at her age since all it looks for is liver or kidney failure, so it’s only necessary for dogs over eight years of age.

Once I got home I made homemade chicken salad (which we ended up eating for dinner), worked on setting up my mom’s new computer (a small Dell I had ordered the week before), and baked some lemon cupcakes (for a party on Saturday).

I Love Our New Primary Care Doctor

Friday I had an appointment with my new primary care physician. We’ve wanted to switch doctors for awhile but the one we’ve had for well over a decade had convenient hours and always accepted our insurance. Until last year when Blue Cross Blue Shield dropped her. When I called her office and spoke to her husband, the office manager, he explained it was because she wasn’t board certified but according to him that wasn’t necessary back when she started her practice. I don’t know whether or not that is true, but we chose a new primary care from a list of names but never actually saw her because Joe got a job and we switched insurance companies again.

Now we have Aetna, and while I’m pretty sure our old primary care is in their system, I felt it was a perfect excuse to leave without her knowing it’s because we’re tired of dealing with her husband. He’s technically friendly but comes off pretty gruff, particularly over the phone. I always feel like he’s trying to rush me off the phone which really sucked the last two times he screwed up and caused me insurance headaches. Those mistakes alone were enough to prompt my desire to leave, but his attitude (aka assigning blame to everyone but himself) really cemented it.

My friend had told me about how much she loved her primary care and it turns out he’s covered by our new insurance so a couple of weeks ago I scheduled an appointment. Not only is his office less than ten minutes away (opposed to 20+ since our old doctor was closer to where we used to live before we got the townhome), but the building is new and modern. Everyone there is super nice and friendly too.

I gave Dr. Nick, as I’m going to call him, a typed-up document going over my current health concerns along with a list of on-going issues, conditions I’ve been diagnosed with, conditions that have been ruled out via testing, the vitamins I take, etc. He really took it all in and put together a plan of action moving forward. This is in stark contrast to former doctor who would just keep sending me to specialists. I could tell after our first meeting that Dr. Nick not only cares about me but is very intelligent too. Everything he said made perfect sense. I really really like him and am hopeful that some of the crap I’ve been dealing with for years without answers might actually be addressed at last.

Even better? Since it was our first visit it was coded as an annual exam and I didn’t have to pay a cent. Woo!

Now I just need to get my old records from former doctor and it’s goodbye forever!

Weekly Recap – Internet Outage & Left Eye Issues

My weekly recaps only cover three days because those are the days I work whereas my weekend recaps will be four days.

Tuesday 1/10 – Went to Buona Beef to pick up dinner since I had a birthday coupon for a free sandwich. Didn’t work, however, because I think the emails I get and my app are two different accounts on their site. But the manager gave me the free sandwich anyway and I will need to figure out how to tie the two accounts together. I got the chicken artichoke panini since I wasn’t in the mood for a burger. I didn’t care for it as much as I had hoped. It was way better cold the next day (I only ate half for dinner), though. So if I get it again I’ll have to get it a day before I actually want to eat it. LOL Joe got the avocado jack burger which I tasted and it was really good.

Wednesday 1/11 – My left eye was bugging the crap out of me all morning (dry and blurry even though I had put in a fresh pair of contacts that morning) so when I went home for lunch I switched to my glasses for some relief. Back at work around 2 pm I went to check on Wookie via the webcam we have set up in the kitchen and it was offline. Came home to learn the internet was down and it was a known area outage Comcast was working to resolve. Estimated time to restore service was 8:30 pm and since all our entertainment is internet-based, we watched Lilo & Stitch on DVD. When we went to bed the internet was still down.

Thursday 1/12 – Internet still wasn’t working when we got up so I called Comcast while I got ready for work. They “sent a signal” to the modem and if we hooked it up directly to the computer we’d get service but our router wasn’t giving us any WiFi. The rep gave us a $10 credit for the outage. Tried some more stuff that evening but nothing was working. What was weird was we couldn’t access the router page from the computer, but Joe could get it on his iPad. Eventually he just reset it to the factory default settings but that seemed to do nothing. Then about 15-20 minutes later it spontaneously started working again. I’m relieved the router wasn’t fried but perplexed what was wrong to begin with. I hope it doesn’t happen again! It’s just weird the outage triggered it to stop working. Also, I ended up wearing my glasses all day to give my eye a rest and we went to Qdoba to pick up dinner since I had a BOGO coupon for my birthday.

Back Pain & RIP Steve

This morning I woke up with such a sore back that I ended up calling in sick to work which I haven’t done since January. I couldn’t deal with sitting in an office chair all day the way I was feeling. I worked out for 40 minutes on Monday and also did some dishes (which I don’t usually do) so I’m guessing that might have contributed to the pain somehow. It seems like lately I can’t do anything without my back hurting but it has never been as bad as this. Once I feel better I am going to start doing yoga to strengthen my back. I really don’t want to go to the doctor yet since the insurance isn’t the greatest so I hope this passes.

After taking some ibuprofen I went back to bed for a few hours. When I checked on the rats I noticed Steve was looking pretty bad. He’s been losing weight for awhile and I haven’t seen him eat anything for a day or two. All he does is sleep and his breathing has been shallow so I had already decided a couple of days ago that we’d be taking him in to be euthanized later this week, but I decided it would be best to do that today since I was worried he was miserable. I made an appointment and we took him to the vet around noon. Even though he was a mean little thing I still felt awful and got teary-eyed. After they brought his lifeless body back into the room I noticed he had some caked up poop on his bottom. There was a tumor near his anus and now I think maybe it had made him difficult to go to the bathroom so I’m really glad we didn’t wait any longer since he might have been in pain. I hope Doug doesn’t take it too hard.

Steve

Incidentally, the vet tried to bill me $60 even though we don’t keep the ashes. I told them they only charged $30 last time when I had Marshmallow put to sleep and they agreed to charge the same this time. I still don’t understand why it would cost $60 for that but whatever. I will have to find out how much it costs at the newer vet before I have to do this again. We took Steve to our old vet since it’s closer. Plus I was a little worried how the new vet might judge me for his condition. He used to be huge but when I picked him up the other day he barely weighed anything. I was torn over when to intervene because I didn’t want him to suffer but I also didn’t want to have him put to sleep too soon either. It’s always a very tough call to make.

Health Scare

As I wrote earlier, I went for a routine mammogram in early September. Well, a few weeks later I received a letter from the radiology center stating there were changes between my recent mammogram and the previous one that required additional testing.

I went in on Friday to have that second mammogram done. Unlike the first visit, I ended up waiting a half hour past my appointment time which was a bit annoying. When Janet (the woman doing my test) came to the waiting room to call my name she was calling a name no one recognized. I later learned it was my primary care doctor’s name (although she was mispronouncing it and it’s not a difficult name to say). This woman wasn’t necessarily unfriendly, but she wasn’t warm and caring like the woman who did my mammogram last month.

Not only that, but after she smashed my left breast twice (as required to get the necessary angles), she went back to her computer to digitally send the scans to the doctor and couldn’t locate them – the scans she literally just took thirty seconds ago. She also couldn’t find my name in the system because someone (I’m guessing her, since she kept saying “I know I put your name in here”) entered my doctor’s name as the patient! I don’t even know why my primary care physician’s name was even in there since it was my gynecologist who ordered the initial mammogram. She then proceeded to edit the name on the record even though from my vantage point it was so clearly not an editable field because it was grayed out. She just kept pounding on the delete key in the non-editable field like that was going to fix everything.

Then she told me she would have to do the mammogram again – no apology or anything, just matter of fact like it was no big deal that I was going to have to go through more pain and discomfort a second time. By the time she was done my breast was very tender/sore. She went back to the computer again and started remarking how she couldn’t find my name/scans, blaming the computer (sure, it’s the computer’s fault) and I almost lost it. Luckily after some digging she located them and sent them off to the radiologist because I wasn’t about to have her do my mammogram a third time without someone else present to oversee her. I was prepared to refuse until a manager was present in the room; I’m dead serious.

After she sent the results she asked me to sit tight while the doctor reviewed them, and she left the room. After about a five minute wait she came back to let me know they would also need to do an ultrasound and instructed me to grab my things and lead me into an internal waiting room. So there I am in a gown that is untied and opens in the front trying to juggle my purse, clothes (while attempting to bury my bra underneath my shirt), and this cup of breast cancer awareness swag she insisted I grab as well. I then had to sit in a room next to a fully clothed woman and wait another couple of minutes. It was humiliating, not to mention I was upset that there might be something seriously wrong since the second mammogram had still left questions.

Finally I was led into the ultrasound room and that technician (I didn’t catch her name since at this point I was upset and in pain) was much more personable. Unfortunately the nature of an ultrasound requires you to lay still on a table while the technician keeps pressing and pressing into your tissue to get the scans needed. Due to having my breast smashed two more times than should have been necessary it was already sore so this didn’t help. Plus it felt like she kept scanning the same spot over and over which was seriously beginning to concern me since I figured she had spotted something. By the end of it I was holding back tears from pain and fear. The doctor came in right away and looked at the scans and told me it was nothing – just a couple of small cysts which are difficult to spot due to how dense my breast tissue happens to be. I was immediately relieved, but holy crap what a stressful experience!

I hope by this time next year we’re on better insurance so I can go back to the hospital to have my annual mammogram. I thought I liked this place better until having to go through this ordeal.

On top of that, I have zero idea how much all this is going to cost me. I called my insurance company earlier in the week to get an idea and was basically told it depends on how the facility bills it and what their contracted rate with the insurance is yet the woman couldn’t access that information to tell me the specifics. She suggested I call the center but at that point I figured what does it matter? I need to have it done regardless and have no other options so it is what it is. Incidentally, based on the few details she was able to share, the mammogram costs more than the ultrasound, so why didn’t they just do an ultrasound to begin with and skip the mammogram? Oh, I know – because they get more money that way, right?

The health care industry is so messed up. There’s no other situation where you’d have services done and then learn what you owe after the fact. No wonder 50% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills. And don’t even get me started on the costs of procedures in this country compared to other just as progressive countries. It’s disgusting how much the good ole U.S. is so money focused. Honestly, that’s all anyone cares about. Your safety is only taken into consideration in terms of cost. If it will cost a corporation less money to risk inflicting harm or even death than it would to make something safer you better damn well bet that your life will be on the line. Case in point: the only reason flying is so much safer nowadays isn’t because the airlines give a shit about your safety – they just don’t want to lose business by killing their customers. And even more so, they don’t want to lose a multi-million dollar aircraft. That’s their major concern. Sad, but true.
