Next year you’re getting everything in gift boxes

I just went through the part of the holidays I dread the most: present wrapping. I procrastinate over it every year because I am the worst at wrapping gifts. I make Joe wrap all the presents to my family, coworkers and the kids, but that still leaves the presents for him. I can’t very well ask him to wrap his own presents, now can I? So I struggle through it and by the end I give up even trying and the presents look somewhat mutilated. But who cares, right? After all, he’s just going to rip them open anyway.

Also, I am turning into a ‘point your finger and laugh at’ pet owner because I wrapped a gift I bought my hamster, Peanut. Hmmm … I’m thinking I really need to get out more. I’m turning into crazy cat hamster lady, but with a husband.

Friday on Thursday & New Music

Thank goodness tomorrow is my last day of work until after Christmas. Yea, unlike many of you lucky ducks, I don’t have the week between Christmas and New Year’s off. But that doesn’t mean I’m not going to thoroughly enjoy the four days I do have away from work. The way things have been going lately it is so desperately needed. Tomorrow night I will kick back on the couch and watch back to back DVR’d episodes of one of my favorite new shows, My Boys, while hubby plays Socom with his buddies. I may put the presents under the tree if I’m feeling especially ambitious.

You have to check out these bands I recently discovered:

Pelican – A Chicago heavy metal instrumental band from what I’ve heard thus far. To be honest, I’m going by the clips I’ve heard at CD Universe as I haven’t bought an album just yet. I do have plans to, however. Something about their style reminds me of The Cure’s Carnage Visors which I listened to twice in a row the other day.

Panic! At The Disco – They have the longest song titles I’ve ever seen! Their music is super catchy and after a cursory listen to Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, not a bad track on the entire album. That’s a hard feat to achieve which is why I still listen to New Order, Depeche Mode and The Cure more often than anything else.

There is nothing worse than having to skip over undesirable tracks. Which reminds me: check out Alkaline Trio but stay away from Orbital’s Altogether album. The suckiest suck they’ve ever released. HORRIBLE. Two discs and one halfway decent song that plays ad nauseam on XM’s The System. And they used to be so good! Man. :p

Ding fries are done!

I’m sure this has been going around the internet for awhile, but I love this song. It’s stuck in my head now.

This evening was quite productive. We worked out and watched an episode of 24, then watched three more episodes while wrapping all the Christmas gifts we’ve purchased so far (which is most of them). 24 is the only show I can watch for three hours and still not be sick of it. I’m going to be so sad when we’re all caught up in a few weeks. Since it was late by the time we were done wrapping, we had cereal for dinner. Tomorrow I’m making steak to make up for it. Cereal is good and all, but it’s really not substantial and I’m still hungry. Plus I’m a meat eater, grrr!

Now we’re going to catch up on the two new King of Queens episodes that aired today before going to bed. This is their last season which sucks.

Would you like an apple pie with that?

Snow storm

I’ve been up since 4:30 am watching the news about the snow that’s been coming down since yesterday evening and shows no letting up. Yesterday we got an e-mail at work saying that if any of our town’s schools were closed, our office was closed, so I’ve been watching the school closings like a hawk because I really don’t want to venture outside.

Joe just left for work because as a supervisor he can’t just not show up. I’m worried about him as he drives far as it is and there are lots of cars in ditches on the expressways. I’ve also been contemplating whether I should jump in the shower and get ready just in case. It’s not too horrible out right now, but it’s only going to get worse as the day goes on. Yet if the office is open, I don’t want to be the only person who doesn’t show up because that would look bad. Joe told me he doesn’t care; he doesn’t want me going out because he’d just worry. I have too much of a work ethic to just blow it off like that, though. While I don’t think anyone in my office would be angry at me for not coming in, I still feel like if the office is open, I should be there. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Update @ 5:05 am: Woo hoo! The high school by my work announced that it will be closed today, so now I don’t have to worry.

Food and drink

We didn’t really do much today. I had a taste for Mongolian beef, so we headed over to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant for lunch. We were psyched that we got parking right in front of the place until we noticed they were closed, for Thanksgiving! I was in shock because I didn’t think the Vietnamese celebrated the holiday.

That threw us off, so we sat there for several minutes trying to think of somewhere else to eat. Still coming up empty, we decided to drive around until we saw something that sparked our interest. You won’t believe where we ended up: Steak and Shake. I’ve only eaten there twice before and the last time I decided I hated it. I don’t know if it was the full-color ad I saw recently, but I started thinking that maybe we should give it another try. I’m really happy we did too because their chili mac supreme is delicious. The last time I had chili like that was over three years ago at Skyline Chili in Cincinnati and it was awful. I’m not sure what possessed me to try it again but I’m very glad I did!

After our late lunch (which was the only real meal we ate today), we went to the grocery store for some shredded lettuce so I can make tacos this weekend. While there Joe decided he felt generous this holiday season and we got a few gift cards for his niece who lives in Arizona. We also picked up some Kahlua after Joe spotted it on sale. We’ve never had it before, but my Mom let me borrow this Kahlua recipe book that my grandmother once owned and we wanted to try it. I must say, that is some good shit! We mixed it with amaretto and milk and wow! I want to try it over vanilla ice cream now.

Oh man am I in trouble! I’ve completely screwed up my sleeping schedule and I only have two days to try and readjust before I go back to work. Last night I was wide awake until 3:30 am and even then I only went to bed because I knew I should. I told myself I’d be in bed by midnight tonight but now I’m not so sure considering how close it is to midnight already. I really am a night owl by nature but due to my work schedule I live under the guise of a early bird.
