Last week I suddenly got the desire to see Jaws again. Luckily, the library had it on dvd. Then as luck would have it, I found out that AMC was playing Jaws II this evening. And now I’m watching Orca which I’ve never seen before. The funny thing is, tomorrow E! is doing a True Hollywood Story on Jaws and a blogger just posted a link to the newest re-enactment of Jaws by bunnies. How goofy that I get the desire to see it and now it seems to be everywhere. Must be that new movie, Open Water, that has not just me, but everyone else, thinking about Jaws again. Because that was a good horror movie for its time. Now I need to see parts 3 (my favorite) and 4. :)

Like, here’s some movies and tv talk
We’ve rented two teenage-like movies in the past two weeks 13 Going On 30 and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. After liking Freaky Friday as much as I did (to my shock), I was quite disappointed in Lindsay Lohan’s performance in the latter, especially considering the fact that Confessions was filmed more recently. I had incorrectly assumed it was made before she started getting “famous”. I much preferred Jennifer Garner’s endearing role as a thirteen year old girl in a thirty year old’s body. The movie was quite well done. Not funny enough that I’d own it on dvd, but enjoyable nonetheless.
I’m looking forward to the point where all the movies that are currently in the theatre start coming out on dvd so we’ll have more to choose from. Luckily we have the first season of Absolutely Fabulous on dvd to keep us entertained for a bit. There’s only six episodes, though, so it won’t last long.
Speaking of tv, my new favorite cable show is Showtime’s original series, Dead Like Me. We happened to catch the second season premiere and have been hooked ever since. Speaking of, it’s due to be on in a few. Oh yea, is it just me, or does the main character in the show remind anyone else of Linda Fiorentino? Or at least Linda’s character, Bethany, in Dogma? Her voice and mannerisms totally remind me of her.
Boycott the movies
After the most recent incident at the movie theatre we have decided for certain to stop going to the movies.
Our local Sony Loews have steadily increased their matinee costs over the last eight months. I’ve verified via my past Discovercard statements that between November 2003 and January 2004, they increased their adult matinee price from $6/person to $6.50/person and then between June and July of this year, they increased it again from $6.50 to $6.75. So in the past eight months we went from paying $12 to see a movie to $13.50. That’s just uncalled for. I also noticed that their evening shows are $9 per person, but $9.25 for what is called the “Adult Premium”, which is a ticket to a Friday or Saturday evening showing. It’s still the same movie no matter when you see it, so to me this is just a way for them to make even more money off people.
For only $2 more than the cost of two matinee tickets, we can buy the movie when it comes out on dvd (which these days doesn’t take nearly as long as it used to) and we own the movie and can see it as much as we want. Seeing how we’d often pay to see the movie at the theatre AND buy it on dvd, if we just buy it outright, we’d actually be saving money. And I sure like to save money. And once we get a large widescreen HDTV, that whole movie experience will be right in our living room. Considering we can easily make our own popcorn and hot dogs for a fraction of the price the theatres charge, the theatre will no longer have anything to justify their outrageous costs.
I think as time goes on and prices at the theatres continue to increase, more and more people are going to adopt our attitude. It’s bad enough to keep paying more when you’re not getting any additional value for your money, but it’s even worse when having to deal with morons at the theatre who more often than not ruin your experience.
Anchorman
Over the weekend we saw Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy because I love Will Ferrell. His acting did not disappoint, but the movie wasn’t as enjoyable as I was expecting. I don’t know if it was because, as someone in the blog world has already pointed out, there wasn’t much of a plot, or if it was due to the extremely rude man and his two pre-teen boys in the theatre. The boys were continuously getting out of their seats and walking around, talking, giggling and carrying on way too loudly, and playing with a laser pointer on the screen. I finally got up and walked over to them and said something to them about how rude they were being. I am so sick of rude and inconsiderate people at the movies. There were no more than twenty people in the theatre and these people were ruining the entire experience. And what kind of parent allows this behavior? I believe he was sitting there snickering at the laser pointing thing just like his stupid kids. I’ve never been so pissed off at a rude person before. They were way over the line. Joe ended up missing some of the best parts of the movie because he had to find an usher to ensure these people didn’t start acting up again. When I ran into them in the lobby I just gave the father a cold hard stare and shook my head. People really need to grow up. Maybe when I get to see the movie a second time in the privacy and quiet of my own home I might find it more enjoyable. Why exactly do I even pay to see these movies anymore? I would say that more than half the time a rude person, or group of people, ruins the experience.
A movie … or something like it
Life or Something Like It was a pretty pathetic excuse for a movie. Now I expect that coming from Edward Burns, but I was very surprised with Angelina Jolie. And the music? Horrible! Can you use more than one tune throughout the movie please? Within ten minutes I knew this movie was going to blow, but I always have to start what I finish. The only movie that was ever bad enough to make me walk away was Two Girls and a Guy as it was the most horrendously boring movie I’ve ever seen. Life or Something Like It now ranks in the top ten worst movies ever. Shame on Angelina! I’d expect this at the beginning of her career, but not now. All her talent was in hiding for this one. I give it a half star, and that is being generous.
