Kill Quentin

I’ve been meaning to write about my experience seeing Kill Bill last weekend. In short, it sucked.

I’ve liked Quentin’s other movies, most notably Pulp Fiction, so I was disappointed to say the least, and disgusted by the graphic violence. I really did not have to see someone with a severed arm rolling about the floor in agony. Maybe I’m getting old or something, but I’m fed up with how casual killing people is made out to be. Furthermore, there was just too much Quentin ego in this movie. Does every scene have to be shown out of sequence? It tends to get old after awhile. It seemed to me like Quentin was trying too hard with this film – it’s not an epic. And the anime? Please, it was pathetic.

Honestly, I don’t know what any of you saw in this movie. I’m rather shocked by all the praise I’ve seen this movie get in blog-land.

The movie was long and drawn out, unnecessarily graphically violent (although in retrospect, what did I expect considering his other films?), and just plain boring. What took nearly two hours to convey could have been wrapped up in a sitcom. I even turned to Joe mid-movie and asked, “Is this over yet?”

But the worst part? I’m going to have to see Volume II just because I have to know how it ends. :p

Nick Cage

Today inadvertently turned into Nicholas Cage day. First we saw Matchstick Men which was even better than I had thought it would be. I don’t want to ruin the movie for anyone, so I’ll just say that I was really thrown by the direction the movie took, which made it all the more interesting.

In the afternoon I remembered that we had borrowed Valley Girl from the library, so we watched that. What was with that movie? I just didn’t get it. Why would anyone want to be with the main character when she was such a bitch? She’d just drop a guy without warning, yet both guys she dated wanted her. Someone should have told me that back when I was in high school … maybe I would have spent less time heartbroken. ;)

Anyway … now I’m watching Gone in Sixty Seconds on cable. I think Nicholas Cage looks better with age, that’s for sure. He’s quite the versatile actor … and while he’s not what I consider a “Hollywood Hunk”, he’s not bad on the eyes, and he’s good at what he does.

I especially love his character in The Family Man, which is the first movie I ever saw with Joe … which may be why I love Nicholas Cage so much, now that I think about it. :)

Weekend Wrap-up

Today was another fantastic day. We contemplated seeing a movie, and finally decided on Freaky Friday. We both though it was pretty funny. I enjoyed it a lot … and I love Jamie Lee Curtis.

Afterwards we had lunch at Pepe’s. The service was good until right at the end. The waitress brought the check and I handed her my credit card because I was ready to go. Well, she wouldn’t take it because unlike other restaurants, apparently they don’t take your card until you fill out the gratuity line. Bah! And then she walked away even though it took me two seconds to fill it out. And so we waited. And waited some more. And then I started getting annoyed because one of my pet peeves is waiting forever just so I can pay. If you want my money, don’t make me wait, otherwise you tempt me to pull a dine and ditch. [Not that I would ever really do that]. Needless to say, I got tired of waiting and went up to where I could be seen with my bill and credit card in hand. The girl apologized because she could tell I was mad, and made some excuse about being short staffed. Like that is *my* problem. If she had just waited two seconds, things would have been fine. So I ignored her and didn’t say a word. What’s that saying? If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Better than me lecturing her, right? ;)

Late afternoon we went to Cosley Zoo to satisfy our photo-taking hunger. They had a bunch of new animals, including some raccoons and a coyote, so that was cool. I got some nice shots of this cute white duck too. He was talking to me the whole time. Really cute.

Music & Movies

I’ve had this $40 Borders gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket for over a month now, and finally got around to placing an order on their website yesterday. For whatever reason, items on Borders.com are approx. $3-$5 cheaper than they are in the brick and mortar store. Really dumb, but whatever.

So guess what I ordered? I got two dvds – Desperately Seeking Susan and Foxfire. If you haven’t seen the latter, and you like Angelina Jolie, I highly recommend it. There’s a bit of nudity in it for you guys. After ordering the former, I really wanted to order Who’s That Girl, but it’s not available on dvd yet. Damn, I really liked that movie when I was younger.

I also ordered a book – The Odd Todd Handbook: Hard Times, Soft Couch. I’ve always got a kick out of all his flash movies (got every single one on my hard drive), so I thought the book might give me at least a dozen laughs.

Speaking of books, I’m currently reading Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About. This is the second time I’ve just grabbed any old book off the library shelf of new fiction and came home with an entertaining story set in England. You know, I think I may start using British terms to explain things because I really like them for some reason. I love how they call an argument a row, or an apartment a flat. I also find it amusing, as well as impressive, how when I’m watching a police chase show featuring British cops, they are always so calm and matter of fact. And those accents. Well don’t get me started, but I think anyone with a British accent sounds about 50 times smarter than an American even if they aren’t. I know, I’m weird. Or perhaps a wanker? ;)
