Weekend Highlights

My Best Friend’s Girl – Dane Cook may not be a great actor, but his character in this movie was thoroughly entertaining. I could do without ever seeing Jason Biggs again, however. There’s something about that guy that just bugs me.

He’s Just Not That Into You – Joe wasn’t too happy that I wanted to see it, but I agreed to suffer through the new Star Trek movie in exchange. I thought it was good. I love Justin Long and Ginnifer Goodwin was really cute in this movie. Bonus – a Cure song in the credits. :)

Kielbasa! – How silly are we that we got super excited today when we stopped at a local Butera just for the hell of it to look for the extremely hard to find Butterball Turkey Kielbasa and they actually had some!? I really wasn’t expecting that!

Wingtown – Stopped for lunch at this place today and really enjoyed it. Review up on Yelp!

IKEA Madness

Sunday we took a trip to IKEA to look for a coffee table and found one we both liked. As noted in the photo taken from IKEA’s site, there’s not much to it. But we don’t care because it’s the perfect size, not to mention price. With kids in the house it’s likely to get scratched up so why spend a fortune?

Of course, prior to our little shopping spree (we got a few other items not worth mentioning), we had their delicious $1.99 breakfast.

After walking around IKEA for an hour, we headed across the parking lot to Bed Bath and Beyond to spend the $25 card from Discover’s cash back. Our plan was to get a magnetic knife board for our spiffy expensive Food Network knives but they only had one for $17 and it was fugly. We had seen one in all metal at IKEA for $9 that we liked better. Problem? Neither one of us was up to walking through all of IKEA to get back to that section (although we later found a shortcut).

Instead, we formulated a brilliant plan to kill some time at the nearby pet store before returning to IKEA for lunch. And that is exactly what we did. We spent a half hour looking at the puppies, kittens, and hamsters. We even played with male Shiba Inu puppy who cost $1300. Seriously? I can rescue 12 dogs from the shelter for that price!

Anyway, then we had lunch at IKEA and got our spiffy knife holder that some day this week Joe will install so we can stop keeping the knives behind the olive oil bottle (to avoid injury to ourselves and the blades). I highly recommend IKEA’s buffalo chicken wrap, by the way. It’s very yummy. But the chicken tenders are just ok. I’d rather get them from a fast food joint.

Weekend Snippets

Yesterday we took the kids to a matinee. We split up and Joe took his daughter to see Twilight while I took his son to see Bolt. Personally, I think Joe got the bum deal since Bolt was fantastic. I didn’t even mind it being in 3-D even thought the glasses aren’t very comfortable.

After the movies we stopped at the produce market and got all sorts of yummy food for lunch, including meats and cheese from the deli. Add to that the taco bar leftovers from Friday night’s dinner, and the leftover spaghetti and meatballs from last night’s dinner, and we’ve got plenty of food for the next couple of days. That means yours truly doesn’t have to cook!

Target has some real comfy pajama pants on sale for $9.99 and since I’ve been hanging on to a few pairs of mine with holes, I took advantage and bought a pair on Friday. Now I can throw the ratty ones out. Unfortunately, I forgot to get another pair while there this morning so I guess I’ll be stopping on the way home from work this week. I also forgot to refill my prescriptions because I am very disorganized lately, so at least the extra trip will be productive.

My curling iron broke the other day so I priced them at Walmart. The one I liked was $25 which seemed a bit high, so I decided to look elsewhere. I recalled buying one for a good price at Ulta a few years ago so we stopped there and sure enough, the same one I liked at Walmart was $16.49 according to the tag. Even better, it rang up $10.99 at the register and I had a coupon for $3.50 off any item $10 or more so after tax it was $8.04. Man, do I love a good deal!

Party

Our party last night was a complete success!

Our first guests arrived around 5:40 pm, and our last guests (the same couple, actually) left at 2:40 am. Everyone stayed a long time, even the older couples who were here for four hours. I don’t think you stay at a party that long unless you’re having fun. After the two older couples left, we played Pictionary, or more like drunken Pictionary since a few people were lit (my husband being one of them). My team won, of course. Joe’s did not. Haha.

Everyone was so nice, bringing us gifts, which I was not expecting. And since this likely will become an annual event with the same guests, I’ve made notes for next year:

We don’t need: Diet Coke, pies, cupcakes, or a cheese ball since they weren’t touched.
We do need: more celery, believe it or not!

I will give Joe credit – people ate a lot more food than I was expecting. And my homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were a hit.

The couple who stayed the longest, K&E, are really nice and live close by; they go to Bingo the same weeks we do. They helped us clean up after everyone left which was awesome and left us very little to do this morning other than vacuum and put all the alcohol away. I think we may have found someone to play board games with too. I am very excited since I only get to play when I go to my parents.

I’m really happy everything went so well. And also pretty tired and betting I’m going to have a hell of a time going to sleep at a decent hour tonight. But it was totally worth it.

The password is…

We spent a good chunk of change this weekend. Damn you, holidays! I already got a few gifts for the kids and Joe’s coworkers out of the way, though.

Yesterday we went to a party store to get some plastic wine glasses and a few other supplies. There’s a Petland nearby, and while I’d never actually buy an animal from them, I like how you can touch most of them. There were a ton of little ferrets in one of the bins and they were massively entertaining. If you hung your arm over, they’d take a flying leap in an attempt to crawl up your arm. We probably spent 20 minutes watching and interacting with them. Joe was able to pick a few up so we could pet them. They were really calm and not at all like our hamster, Oreo, who starts screaming the minute she’s picked up, as if we’re trying to take her limbs off. In fact the ferrets didn’t make any noise at all. I’m considering getting one. They’re still no match for a cat, but they might be ok with the boy’s allergies and they are really fun to watch. A friend of ours has a ferret, so I’d like to see one in a home environment first. I just know I’m done with hamsters.

New board games Today we did our grocery shopping. Target had board games on sale, so we bought three: Trivial Pursuit 25th Anniversary Edition, Buzzword, and Wits & Wagers.

I’m bringing them all to my parents’ for Thanksgiving. I am a sucker for games, and they all look so fun, I don’t know which one I will want to play first! Well, maybe not Trivial Pursuit. I have a love/hate relationship with that game. We own four versions now and I never know the answers to any of the questions. We got this new one since it has different levels of difficulty. Maybe if I play on easy I’ll be able to successfully answer a question or two. The price couldn’t be beat on any of these games. Trivial Pursuit and Wits & Wagers were each $20 and Buzzwords was $15; I think all three normally go for $30+.

When we got home and I started putting the groceries away, I noticed the expiration on the bacon in the fridge was today, so we decided to have BLTs. Just a small problem – no tomato or lettuce. So off to the produce market we ran to pick up some stuff, including potatoes for the roast Joe has in the crockpot. As we’re driving away from the store, I realized we forgot the lettuce! So we stopped at Dominick’s to get that. I swear I never thought it would be so difficult to put together a BLT! Now I have to go eat one.
