Gifts from hubby

Yesterday morning when I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth, I found sunflowers in a vase sitting on the sink… a Sweetest Day gift from Joe. He always manages to surprise me with flowers when I least expect it.

Speaking of surprises, despite saying we were not going to exchange gifts for our anniversary, which is tomorrow, Joe got me two gifts and was so excited, had me open them today. The first one was a puzzle of a beach, to remind me of our wedding, and also because paper is the traditional gift for the first anniversary. The second gift was a Nintendo DS Lite, in black, and as Joe pointed out, the modern gift for the first anniversary is clocks, of which the Nintendo DS has. My hubby is so clever!

He wasn’t sure what game to buy me, so he picked up Catz, but since it’s really meant for the Gameboy Advance, it lacks cool graphics or touch-screen capability so we took it back and got Brain Age instead. I’m embarrassed to report on my first training I got a brain age of 70. On the second one I got 56. At least I’m improving! It also has Sudoku on it which I never played before. I’ve been perusing Walmart.com for other DS games and have a list of eight games I want already, some of which haven’t even been released yet (including the DS version of Catz).

My husband is awesome, and I am a terrible wife for not getting him a gift. I should have known he wasn’t going to stick to our agreement. I have to do better for Christmas in order to redeem myself!

Cute decorations

Light-up pumpkins from Target Check out the cute light-up pumpkins I bought at Target today. They were only $2.50 each so I got one for each of the kids. I just love Halloween decorations! I think I like them better than Christmas. I hope we get at least one trick-or-treater this year. Last year we were away on our honeymoon, but the year before that not one kid came to our door. :p

Mongolian Beef & other things

We ended up at our favorite Chinese restaurant, Luong Loi, for lunch today. I had completely forgotten about it when lamenting last week on not finding a good Chinese place since they are little pricier and we don’t consider them take-out. But so far their food is well above the rest. Today we tried the Mongolian beef and damn was it good! It wasn’t spicy at all, which was surprising, but the beef was so tender and not fatty at all. There was a ton of it served over a bed of rice noodles. I’ve never had it presented that way before, but it couldn’t have been more delicious. I could eat at that place every week if it didn’t burn a hole in the pocketbook.

Joe finally used his Radio Shack gift card from last xmas and got me a battery charger since my Energizer one doesn’t seem to be working properly. The charger came with 4 AA and 4 AAA rechargeable batteries and the best part is it charges them in a half hour instead of eight hours like the old charger. Hopefully now I won’t be caught without any batteries for my Powershot!

We also hit (evil) Best Buy to get a game for the kids so we could use the last of the balance Joe had on his gift card. I really really really hate Best Buy (sorry Jeff). It’s hard to describe the feeling I get just walking into that place, but it’s not a good one. First off, I think all the employees there are jackasses. It might just be the BB by me, but I just have the overwhelming urge to punch each and every one of them in the face. There are way too many of them crawling around the store, watching you like hawks as if you’re going there specifically to shoplift every item you can get your hands on. They have like five people guarding the doors! It’s ridiculous. Then the cashier inspects your credit card as if she works for the CIA! And to be honest, while they may have to be friendly and courteous, I don’t buy that they really give two shits about the customer. I feel the waves of hostility coming off them. It’s like they are trained to view the consumer as the enemy. I get that they don’t want to get ripped off, but feeling like they don’t trust or even like the consumer is probably not the proper way to conduct business. I’ve never gotten that feeling anywhere else but Fry’s Electronics and I won’t shop there either. Screw Best Buy. I was so glad to get out of there. I hope to god Joe doesn’t get another gift card this year from that place.

Anyhow, we also stopped at the library to buy an Entertainment book. It’s interesting how if you order the book online they want $25 yet you can get it locally for $20. Free shipping my ass. Anyway, Joe would like everyone to know he’s been trying to get me to buy that book for years. It’s true, and I never thought it was worth it. But I flipped through the 2007 book my boss has and there were many coupons I can see using. Maybe I should keep track of how many coupons we do use to see how long it takes to recoup the $20 and start saving money. Hmmm ….

New design

So what do you think of the new design? I took a WordPress theme and tweaked it so it would be appropriate for Halloween, one of my favorite holidays. Plus that pink couldn’t possibly have lasted much longer. I’m not really a pink kind of girl, although I don’t hate that color like I used to.

Anyway, it’s a cold, but sunny day out, so we’re finally getting off our lazy butts to run some errands and go out to lunch. Didn’t bother going bowling this morning like we originally planned (the alley is smoke-free before noon) because I didn’t feel like getting out of bed.

But I’m not complaining! I love the weekends, no matter what we do.

Just some stuff

Busy week, I’ll make this quick.

I’m getting really addicted to the jewelry making thing, particularly bracelets because I never used to wear them since I never liked what I saw at the store. Plus they are cheaper and quicker to make. Not that I’ve been watching my budget. I’m guessing I’ve spent a good $100, if not more, in the past few weeks. I do have a lot of crystal in different colors, as well as sterling silver beads, to show for it. Plus making my own stuff is satisfying.

What do you think of the new Yahoo! mail? Or am I the only one not on the Gmail bandwagon? I like the preview pane and ability to drag and drop messages. I don’t like the slow initial loading and it taking me to the Trash when I empty it. I’d like to see the Calendar and Notes incorporated into the design, but since it’s beta I’m sure there will be improvements to come.

The Office is still one of my favorite shows on tv, despite Jim and Pam not getting together. Actually, I’m glad they didn’t and I hope Jim doesn’t hook up with his new co-worker either. It’s like Who’s The Boss? where you wanted to see Tony and Angela get together, but once they did, the show went downhill. They have to string you along with the sexual tension until they’re ready to cancel the series. That’s the only way to do it.

We might go bowling this weekend and I haven’t bowled in years. We wanted to go a few weeks ago, but I had forgotten how expensive it is! I called the Brunswick by us and realized for four of us it would have been $30 for one game. That’s insane! I signed up the for Brunswick e-newsletter and got a 99 cents per game coupon that’s good for this weekend only. That I can do, since there’s still the shoe rental. I wish it was Cosmic Bowling, though. I’ve never done it, but it looks like fun.
