Staycation – Day 2 – Saturday

Our second day of staycation began with a trip to the arboretum for a bike ride. They shut down the roads from 7-9 am every Saturday and Sunday so people can bike and jog without worrying about getting ran over.

I thought the fact that I’ve been working out often on the elliptical would have helped my stamina. I was wrong. There are so many hills that you don’t notice when driving through the arboretum. I had to get off my bike and walk it more times than I can count. I was sweaty and out of breath in no time flat. I made it a half hour, though, and burned close to 200 calories. Will I do it again? Hell no! Oh, and bike helmets are so uncomfortable. Joe’s enployer’s wellness program paid for ours which was nice. But the clasp under my chin felt like it was choking me.

After we got back to the car I encouraged Joe to take the loop a second time without me since he had to keep stopping for me. When he got back we killed some time sitting around because I wanted to get some rat food from Pet Supplies Plus which doesn’t open until 9 am. We got there right before 9 but by 9:20 they still weren’t open. Apparently the employee responsible for opening the store was a no show so we left.

After dropping off the bikes at home we went back out to run errands which included a visit to Kmart. I cannot stand that store and I have no idea how they’re still in business with their ridiculous prices. We also went to Half Price Books and I found this board game called Smart Ass that’s been on my Amazon wishlist for quite a few years. With the 30% off coupon it was under $10.

Smart Ass Board Game

Once we got home it was only noon so Joe washed his car while I put away the groceries we had purchased and did some dishes. Then I went upstairs to let Milo out to play for a bit.

Once Joe was finished cleaning his car we both took a shower and then lounged around the house. I made BBQ chicken in the crockpot and we ate dinner while watching a movie I had borrowed from the library.

Now it’s 8 pm and I’m ready for bed so it will likely be an early night. Tomorrow morning we’ll be running more errands and then picking up E in the afternoon to spend the week with us.

Staycation – Day 1 – Friday

I’m on a staycation for the next 11 days, woot!

Day 1 started out with a trip the eye doctor, and then after coming home to eat breakfast, I headed to the library to relax and read some magazines for two hours which just flew by. I borrowed some magazines, books, DVDs, and even a game called Catchphrase that I’m looking forward to trying. On the way home I stopped at another library to pick up a book that was on hold.

When I got home I cleaned the rats’ cages and let Milo and Marshmallow run around a bit on the bed together. They’ve been introduced in the tub twice before and while Marshmallow can be a little rough when he’s playing, they aren’t trying to kill one another which is a good sign. Marshmallow keeps licking Milo’s genitals, though, which was freaking me out. But after a little internet research this is apparently a way rats sometimes assert their dominance. It’s just weird because I’ve never seen other rats do it before.

My brother stopped by after work and we went to Aldis to pick up some food. Then we ordered a couple of pizzas from Dominos since they were offering 50% off when you order online. I almost freaked out when the total came to $30 before realizing the coupon hadn’t been applied. When I fixed that it was a more reasonable $16.76 which is still not cheap for two medium pizzas, but a lot better than $30. How they think two 12″ pizzas are worth $30 is beyond me. Both were pretty good. We got the Honolulu Hawaiian and the Wisconsin 6 cheese with pepperoni on one half.

Domino Pizzas

After dinner we played bags. Joe decided to make his own boards and had been working on them for the last month. We’ve wanted some for quite awhile but weren’t willing to shell out $200+ for them.

Bears Cornhole

I think they came out great and it ended up costing us $110 so we paid nearly half. We had purchased decals for them but returned them because the shade of orange didn’t match the paint on the boards so they would have looked stupid.

Bears Cornhole Bags

We ordered the bean bags from Etsy in case anyone is interested in buying their own.

Left Eye – Follow-Up Visit

I had my follow-up eye appointment this morning and I’ve gotta say, I love this doctor I’ve been seeing. She is very smart and she explains everything. There is a touch of cockiness to her but I actually like it. And I think she appreciated that I’m not a dummy. She asked me whether I had worn my contacts since I last saw her and I said no way, she told me not to. She laughed and remarked “if only all my patients listened”. We marveled over how some people don’t follow directions and then wonder why they are still having problems.

She examined my eye and said it looked much better. I told her I was still having what I now know is called referred pain (my eyelid hurts but it feels more like the eye itself and the back of the eye) and she said the ointment I’ve been prescribed could cause some irritation but to keep using it as prescribed and by the time I’m done it should feel better. If it still hurts a week from now, I can come back to see her.

She also instructed me to use a new pair of lenses once I’m done with treatment (already threw out that other pair), and gave me a sample of what she wants me to use to disinfect my lenses moving forward.

Clear Care

Talk about old school! My ex used to use this stuff for his hard lenses. I didn’t even realize they made them for soft lenses. It’s expensive too. Even more so than the Opti-Free and BioTrue solutions I was using. Figures. But I guess that’s the price one pays for healthy eyes. And after going through all this I don’t want to mess with that because I was having vision problems in that eye from all the irritation which is the worst. Everything I do requires clear vision – working on the computer, reading, watching tv, etc. So if it will cost me a little more to avoid having eye issues, so be it.

Annual Party

Sunday was our friends’ annual party. We met our mutual friends at a local restaurant to grab a late lunch beforehand. I have to admit, every year I don’t really look forward to this party because no one does anything but drink and sit around and talk. And the majority of the people are Joe’s coworkers so they tend to gossip about people at work and I have nothing to add to the conversion. Plus, I prefer to do something, even if it’s play a game of some sort. Despite that, however, I had a good time because I do like these people! When it got dark I broke out the $1 neon bracelets I had picked up at Target and surprisingly, even the guys opted to wear them. We decided instead of standing outside my friends house like we usually do, we’d actually walk over to the nearby park to see our town’s Summerfest fireworks up close and personal. They were awesome! And no one lit firecrackers in their buttcrack like during previous years (although that same guy did get drunker than everyone else which he does every year).

Left Eye Update

Well, I guess I jinxed myself because on Thursday my eye was bothering more than ever. It felt like a contact lens was stuck underneath my eyelid and it started getting really red and swollen. I ended up taking out my contacts around lunchtime and when I got home from work I called the eye clinic to make an appointment. They had to call me back since a triage nurse had to speak to me first. I don’t know where this lady was getting her information from since she claimed the doctor back on June 20th dilated my eye. I think I would know if he had! She also asked if I had worn my lenses since the infection. What dilation? What infection? I disputed both these claims and said I just wanted to see someone other than the guy I already saw and that I wanted my eye dilated as well. She gave me a 1 pm appointment for Friday.

The female doctor I saw on Friday was a bit cocky, but very knowledgeable, so I guess she has reason to be that way. She dilated my left eye (and boy, was my vision screwed up after that, so now I know I wasn’t losing it and that guy had not done it before; she confirmed that he did it back in 2007 but that’s hardly recent), but mostly to humor me. She said everything behind the eye and the eye itself looks perfectly fine. Her diagnosis – I’ve developed an allergy to the contact lens cleaner I use (Opti-Free). She said this can happen, and strangely enough, only one eye is typically affected. She said that 8 out of 10 patients who develop an allergy are usually using Opti-Free products. She also said that the eye twitching I’ve had in the past is normal and happens to everyone, and that the pain/pressure behind my eye isn’t really behind it since there are no pain fibers there. She said it’s pain from underneath my eyelid that seems to come from behind the eye, similar to how people having a heart attack will often feel pain in their shoulder.

She instructed me not to wear my contacts for the next ten days and gave me a prescription to clear up the irritation in my eye. I dropped it off at CVS (which was a fun drive because my left eye was blurry and super sensitive to light from the dilation) so that Joe could pick it up on his way home. As I got home, CVS called me to say it wasn’t in stock and they’d have to order it and it would be available on Monday. I asked the girl if she could call around to the other CVS stores in the area to see if they had it in stock and she agreed. It was in stock at one not too much further from us so Joe said he’d pick it up. I was making dinner when he called from that CVS to inform me the prescription was $146 WITH insurance. WTF!?! I called over to the eye clinic and explained the situation and asked whether they could prescribe something else, which they did. I didn’t want Joe to sit around waiting for them to call it in and for CVS to fill it, so I called the CVS and asked them to transfer it to our local one once they got it, to which they agreed. The girl was very nice and even called me later to let me know that she had received it and transferred the request. This medication was only $10 and works the same way. My eye is already feeling better (although not perfect)!

I don’t know why the other doctor didn’t figure this out since he had also asked me what products I use for my contacts and I mentioned the Opti-Free to him. The doctor I saw Friday is a contact lens and eye disease specialist so maybe that’s why she picked up on that whereas the other guy did not. In any case, I will NOT be seeing him again.

It sucks that I can’t wear my glasses until Tuesday the 22d, though, because that means I can’t wear sunglasses. We’re attending an outdoor party this afternoon and it’s super sunny out! Also, I don’t care much for my glasses because they don’t fit as well as my old ugly ass ones, not to mention the prescription is a bit out of date. I don’t get new glasses too often because I usually wear my contacts. I would like to get a new pair of glasses this year but I’m dreading it because a) my head it super small so most frames are too big on me and b) the cost will be out of pocket since I already used the insurance on my contacts.

This whole thing has been such a bummer, but at least the mystery has been solved and I’m on the road to recovery. I have a follow-up appointment on Friday and the doctor said she’ll let me know then what kind of cleaning solution she wants me to use moving forward. Since I have a stockpile of the Opti-Free in the garage it looks like Joe will have to use it. Hopefully he can get through all that and his own stuff before it expires!
