I need to talk about flip-flops for a moment. Or as some people call them, thongs. I hate them. Or more like they hate me. I think they are so cute! They come in so many colors and styles, and I wish I could buy them and love them like apparently all the people in my office building who wear them every day (although personally, I wouldn’t wear them to the office because I think they look retarded with dress clothes).
But the thing is, they hurt my feet. Plus the feeling of the material between my toes bugs the living crap out of me. How do you people stand it? I never wore them as a kid because I hated that feeling, and then I bought a pair at Target the other day figuring it might just be a matter of having to get used to them, and I nearly crippled myself walking around the kitchen for less than five minutes. My toes were hurting for half an hour afterwards. Maybe my toes are too close together or something.
I guess you could say I am flip-flop challenged. :(
I think you have to build up a tolerance over time. Eventually the skin between your toes will toughen up so they won’t hurt any more. That said, I still occasionally find flip-flops that are uncomfortable… I think it all depends on what the “thong” part is made of. Some of the rubber ones will cling to your skin and cause blisters. And some other materials can be rough.
But yeah, you need to find a pair and wear them 5-10 minutes at a time until your skin toughens up!
I looove Tevas flip-flops – they have the softer webbing stuff and the bottoms are nice and squishy. They’re a little expensive if you’re not (or not sure you are) a flip-flop fan but Old Navy generally has some similar ones that aren’t as much. I think that style is much more comfortable than the plastic/rubber/whatever they are ones and the between-the-toes part tends to be flat rather than round. I put on flip-flops as soon as it’s above frost temperatures and don’t take them off all summer (except for work…that wouldn’t go over well).
I used to wear them all the time as a kid, but then my klutzy-ness caught up to me and I would stub my toe a lot so I ended up back in tennis shoes (athletic shoes?) and to this day can NOT wear flip-flops (yes, we called them thongs, too, but now adays we have that “other” thing called thongs…sheesh… I won’t wear them either.)
