Can you hear me now?

Wow, it sure seems like I have a lot to say today, huh? That seems to happen to me a lot. For days I’ll feel like there’s nothing worth writing about and then one day it’s like a bunch of things are going on at once. Such is my life. Anyway …

In two weeks my current wireless contract with Nextel ends. Thank the sweet Lord! I hate their shitty service. The only reason I got them to begin with was Joe has them through work so I wanted the Direct Connect, which you can only get through them, so I could talk to Joe easily without using up minutes. But now we’ve decided to just find a “family plan” that has two phones and a decent amount of minutes so we won’t have to deal with Nextel anymore. Well, he does for work still, but I won’t. *Does the happy dance*

So … we have narrowed it down to T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless. Does anyone have experience with either one of these carriers? I’m especially interested about those in the Chicagoland area, but if you’re not, I’d still like to know what you think.

Oh, and please don’t recommend another carrier because it’s a pet peeve of mine when someone asks on their blog, “of these choices, which one do you like?” and a person responds and goes on and on about something that wasn’t one of the choices. It just irks me, so don’t do it. I don’t want to hear about Verizon (prices too high) or US Cellular who suspiciously talks only about their “award winning customer service” and little else, probably because their coverage blows. Oh, and no Sprint PCS either. That goes for Cingular and PrimeCo (if they still exist) too. Ok, did I cover them all so that no one aggravates me? :)

  1. I have and LIKE my AT&T Wireless service.

Where I live, anyway, I haven’t had problems with dropoffs (except when I’m driving through the canyons, which is to be expected). I have a great plan that covers LD calling when I’m in my own calling area. I can view my minutes and my bill online. I even got a pretty good phone through attwireless.com for free (v60i) – so overall, good experience. I’ve dealt with a couple of customer service reps who weren’t really bright, but some were. So – customer service has been a crapshoot.

And those are my two pennies. On topic, even. :)

  2. How about this to piss you off? Doesn’t matter because they all use the same service, just like all regular phones using AT&T’s phone lines. So pick one with the best customer service and the best prices and go with it. You certainly aren’t going to get any better reception or anything else….

  3. I used to have T-Mobile but when my contract expired and I wanted a new phone, they weren’t very quick to help me out. As a result, I switched to AT&T. I’ve been semi-happy with them. I don’t use many minutes and therefore have a crappy plan for $30/mo. but it works for me. And I only lose coverage in the same areas that my T-Mobile phone would cut out on me, so I guess it’s the area and not the phone. P.S. I live in Houston but I’ve used my AT&T phone while visiting in Chicago and it worked just fine. =)

  4. I will mention that AT&T Wireless is taking open bids for someone to buy them. Last I’d heard, Cingular had offered cash to buy them. Just so ya know.

  5. I had and like AT+T for two years, they had great customer service. I only left b/c I was in love with a flip phone that Verizon offered.

  6. Well you see, since AT&T is looking to sell out, most likely to be bought out by Cingular I would say T-Mobile. Even if AT&T wasn’t up for sale I would say T-Mobile. The service is realiable and the customer service reps are actually helpful, they seem to try to work your problems out were AT&T just gives a generic answer.

I would also go with T-Mobile because they use (and have always used) GSM networks. AT&T always used TDMA and just started using GSM last year, it’s still not that strong of a service yet. I perfer GSM over TDMA anyday. The T-Mobile packages are pretty sweet too and they are always offering some killer promos. Being that T-Mobile is cheaper for a dealer to carry you can get better deals on phones and stuff than you could with AT&T

  7. I would go with T-Mobile. From everything that I have read on them and from people I have talked to about them they are awesome.

I know as soon as my current cell phone contract expires I’ll be switching to T-Mobile. :)

  8. I’ve had T-Mobile service for 4 years, and the service has been great. I’ve taken the phone with me to New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, New York, plus a few other places and always had good phone connections. Never had any billing problems, and the customer service is pretty good. I’ve got their rock-bottom plan ($20 bucks a month).

The only down side is that their phone selection is a bit lame, but they use SIM cards so you can buy any GSM phone that uses SIM cards and use it with T-Mobile.
