February Recap

02/06 (Tue) – Took Wookie to an internal medicine specialist this morning regarding her kidney disease and got total sticker shock when they presented us with an estimate for all the testing they wanted to run. But how can you say no if one of those tests might put you on a better path to managing her condition? So of course we agreed. They did a thorough ultrasound and lots of blood and urine testing. We have a plan going forward to manage her health as best we can.

We tried drowning our sorrows at the Costco food court later that afternoon and got a strawberry sundae and their new chocolate chip cookie. Both were very disappointing. The cookie was baked far too long and wasn’t good at all. We ate less than half before throwing it out. As for the sundae, I’m not sure if there was something wrong with the soft serve machine, or if they switched to an inferior ice cream, but it wasn’t nearly as good as it usually is. The taste, texture, and color were all off. I hope it was a fluke.

02/14 (Wed) – We don’t exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day anymore which is fine because I don’t see the point in getting stuff just for the sake of it. Plus we just had Christmas and my birthday, so it’s gift overload. We did order our favorite Mexican takeout for dinner, though!

02/17 (Sun) – Went looking at tile and flooring for the master bathroom renovation that we’ve been putting off. Honestly, I get overwhelmed just thinking about it. I am having such a hard time finding wall tile I like! The Tile Shop had the perfect white tile on display when we first walked in and wouldn’t you know it, that tile has been discontinued for three years. Because of course it is! I cannot catch a break, and with other stuff going on with my health, Wookie’s health, and the house, I am feeling stressed out. None of it is the end of the world (except for worrying about Wookie), and will eventually get worked out one way or the other, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling like too much is going on at once. I’m thankful I’m not working because that’s an added stress I just can’t deal with right now.

02/21 (Wed) – Saw baby Great Horned owls! Apparently there are three in the nest, but I was only able to see two at any one time. The parents were in trees nearby as well.

02/23 (Fri) – Woke up with nerve pain in arms that as the days progressed turned into my legs hurting and feet burning. Tried to remain active and not give into the pain, but it freaks me out when this happens. Looking back through my notes, it seems to happen once a year and lasts longer each time. Do I have some weird Fibromyalgia that comes and goes? A lot of the symptoms seem to fit. It also seems to get triggered by periods of high stress, which is really hard to keep at bay being a Type A person.

02/29 (Thu) – Saw my gynecologist to talk about how I’ve been feeling lately. She ran a bunch of bloodwork that came back normal, although I did notice some things were on the low end of normal and could explain some of my issues. I’m going to try taking birth control to even out my hormonal fluctuations. I’m definitely in perimenopause at this point and tired of the unpredictable cycles and moodiness.

Note – as of March 10th, most of the nerve related issues have almost completely gone away. Interestingly, I’ve started taking Emergen-C again after discontinuing it last year. It must contain the right combination of vitamins that makes me feel good. Or it’s just an odd coincidence, but I started taking it shortly before all my issues from 2019-2020 went away, so I’m convinced it does something good for me.

Enjoyed the following movies and series in February:

The Breaker Uppers (Netflix) – For the right price, BFFs Jen and Mel will ruthlessly end any romance. But when one grows a conscience, it threatens to derail their relationship.

The Now (Roku series) – Starring Dave Franco, a man decides to turn his life around after learning that he is the third member of his immediate family to be suicidal.

September 2023 Recap

Started listening to a podcast called Morbid. I swear I used to listen to it years go, but none of the episodes were already marked as played in Apple Podcasts, so I’m not sure, but I really like it and there’s a huge backlog of episodes to enjoy.

9/02 (Sat)
Went on our second bike ride of the year at Cricket Creek where we saw a herd of deer. I chose that location so we could pick up breakfast from a Mexican restaurant on the way home.

That afternoon I ripped out a bunch of zinnias since they had gotten out of control. Next year I will plant fewer flowers.

9/05 (Tue)
Saw a bald eagle at Armstrong Park!

Obtained our REAL IDs from the state so we could get into Fermilab (they started requiring those, or a passport, earlier this year).

9/13 (Wed)
Our new windows and patio door was installed. There will be a separate entry about this at some point, and I will link to it when it goes up. Some stuff is going on post-installation so the “story” is not complete yet.

9/15 (Fri)
Purchased a pair of Sketchers from Target to replace the shoes I wear on the treadmill which are literally falling apart. A few days later I saw there was a Target Circle deal for 20% off shoes so I chatted with an agent to see if they could refund me the difference. They ended up giving me $15 back which was way more than I asked for, but who am I to argue? So instead of $30 the shoes were $13.88 which is good because it turns out they aren’t that comfortable for treadmill walking. I should have known better – I’ve never like Sketchers. I plan to keep them because they are slip-ons which comes in handy for walking Wookie, but I still need to find something else for the treadmill.

9/21 (Thu)
Wookie turned 7 years old! She has kidney issues which are currently stabilized with medication and a special diet, but it pains me to say she will have a shorter lifespan than her breed normally does because she will eventually go into kidney failure. I really do not like thinking about it because I love her so much.

We bought her a special treat – Milk-Bone Pup-Peroni Mash Ups which are described as “crunchy Milk-Bone biscuits, exploding with baked-in, meaty Pup-Peroni chunks”.

I figured they might be better for her stomach issues. She loves Pup-Peroni but they didn’t seem to agree with her. She LOVES these. She gets one every evening and she does a million little excited spins when she knows it’s time.

I tried to sign up for a paid Dropbox account so I could migrate away from Google One, but Dropbox didn’t want my money. Once I got to the payment page there was a “verify you’re a human” test that would say I passed, disappear, and then say “verification failed”. I tried it multiple times but got stuck in this endless loop of telling me I was ok and then saying “sike, you’re not! try again!” What a bummer, but maybe it’s for the best.

9/23 (Sat)
Visited the Morton Arboretum for the first time in about 5 years. Between my 2019 sickness and them changing to timed entry during the pandemic, it was no longer appealing. They finally dropped the time entry requirement for members, so we signed up. Fall is the best time of the year there, plus we can drive around the grounds in the winter and hopefully see some owls. We’ve been looking for them everywhere and have yet to spot a single one.

9/24 (Sun)
Went to both Fermilab and Mount Saint Mary Park again, but neither were as fruitful as our previous visit. It seems the birds just aren’t as active this time of year.

9/28 (Thu)
Had lunch with my friend, C. I drove to her place and then we went and grabbed food from Burger King to bring back to her house. It was a very nice afternoon.

9/29 (Fri)
An issue I had with Chick-fil-a was finally resolved. I had mobile ordered their limited time Honey Pimento Chicken sandwich on 9/9 only to find barely any of the specialty sauce on it when I opened the sandwich at home. I submitted a complaint online and other than an automated reply, never heard back. I even called their customer care a week later and all they could do is tell the local restaurant to call me, which still didn’t happen. So I called them directly and the woman I spoke with, Heather, was very apologetic and put five free items in my rewards account to redeem:

Two honey pimento chicken sandwiches
A caramel crumble milkshake
My choice of a few other sandwiches
And a free drink of any size

I got the special chicken sandwich and the milkshake the next day and both were delicious!

9/30 (Sat)
Went to a few nature places and then Bass Pro Shop to look at hiking boots. Ended up buying a pair that I plan to wear around the house to ensure their comfort. Afterwards we went to IKEA to look at window treatments and found some white cordless cellular shades that should look nice in the living room. We have been using temporary black paper cellular shades but decided black was too dark.

NYE & New Years Day

As usual, New Years Eve was super chill. We split two small specialty pizzas we picked up from Aldi and watched Glass Onion on Netflix. I liked it just as much as Knives Out, and rated them both 8/10.

The pizzas weren’t great, although I liked the goat cheese on the one labeled Caprino Verde (the other was called Buffalo Mozzarella and we mistakenly were expecting it to have buffalo sauce on it).

We were both in bed by 10ish but I didn’t actually fall asleep until 1 am partially because I wasn’t tired, but also because people were setting off fireworks from midnight until 1.

New Year’s Day we went over to K’s house to celebrate Christmas and my birthday. We stopped and picked up some munchkins from Dunkin on the way there and arrived around 11 am.

She got me so many awesome things, including a heating pad that can be snapped together to form a pouch for your feet. I love it!

She also got me a keychain that says “Guess Who’s Got Anxiety?” (haha), a pair of socks with flames on it because I’m always telling her to set it on fire when she doesn’t like something, some soft socks with reindeer on them, a Bath & Body Works gift card, and a few things from my wish list – a pair of slippers, a bluetooth remote for my phone (I intend to use it for TikTok scrolling), and the recently released Robert Smith Funko Pop. My friend also gave Wookie a Chewbacca dog toy “from” her dog, and Joe a Dunkin gift card.

I also bought her “dog person” mug I found at Target the day before, which she loved. I loved it too, so much so that I went back to Target yesterday and got myself one.

My gifts to her:

A pair of socks with dog bones on it, a eyeglass holder for her nightstand (which is just like one I got a few months ago and love – luckily when she looked at the listing she mentioned which pattern she liked), a box of mug cakes, a single serve blender, and a pan of cherry pie bars which I had made the day before. I joked that I’m her sugar dealer. I was worried whether she’d like the blender, but luckily she loved it, and the color I picked out too. Yay!

I made sure to have Joe take some photo of K & I together since we don’t have any after all these years and still need to look through them. I hate pictures of myself, but I wanted to have some of us together since she’s like a sister to me.

We ordered lunch from a local Thai place and shared a Crumbl cookie for dessert. (She had given me the coupon she got for her birthday so I picked out one on Saturday called Galaxy Brownie which was pretty good).

It was a nice day, other than Wookie constantly pestering us to leave. She was a real pain on this visit in general. First off, the second she came through the door she immediately starting eating my friend’s dog’s food which she’s never done before. She acts like we starve her even though I’m feeding her the recommended amount of food daily. She also peed on the floor right in front of us, and then pooped down the hallway despite us making sure she went to the bathroom before we left and Joe taking her out frequently. Luckily my friend is understanding as her dog often goes where he isn’t supposed to, as do many of the dogs she looks after when she dog sits, but it was still embarrassing.

Usually Wookie will just chill by us but this visit she kept going to the door and whining. She really didn’t want to be there to the point I’m not sure I’d bring her with us the next time we visit unless it’s nice weather and we’re outside in the yard. She still gets restless, but it’s not as bad.

We ended up leaving around 3:30 so we got home just as it was getting dark outside. We watched Road Trip for the umpteenth time since we had been discussing it with my friend, plus we wanted to destress and not have to pay close attention to anything.

First Doggie Playdate of the Year

Saturday (03/19) we went to K’s house for the first time this year. Originally we thought it would be nice enough to sit outside but it decided to rain for three days leading up to our visit so her backyard was muddy, plus the temperature was lower than predicted.

We arrived around 10:30, even after stopping at Starbucks for Joe to get a latte (which was free because I won 150 stars in their sweepstakes earlier that morning) because traffic was great. She was dog-sitting for this very cute & friendly dog named Izzy who was fun to interact with.

Wookie seemed excited to see the new dog and Teddy, who is K’s dog, and she knows well, but Izzy kept getting in her face wanting to play so she decided she didn’t like her after all. She wouldn’t bark at her, like she did with previous dogs my friend has had over, but she did growl at her and try to get away from her most of the time.

We decided to order from a local place for lunch called Charcoal Flame Grill. I got a 1/4 chicken with rice and potatoes and Joe got a polish dog with fries. I would probably try something else from their extensive menu next time because the bite I tried of Joe’s food was very good. Mine was just ok.

All the dogs were rather sleepy after trying to unsuccessfully get us to share our food with them.

It sucks that Wookie doesn’t really enjoy being around other dogs. I think she doesn’t understand when dogs want to play with her. Instead she assumes they’re trying to harm her. Needless to say, she was overjoyed when we were ready to leave at 3:30.

It was nice getting out of the house for something other than grocery shopping.

Wookie’s Portrait

Isn’t this the cutest thing ever? It looks just like her! I am amazed by the talent of this artist.

So let me explain…

I heard that if you contact Chewy around your pet’s birthday to request a portrait they will send one for free, so I emailed them. Their response was friendly, but apologetic stating they can’t meet all requests, but to send a photo just in case, which I did.

A month passed by without anything so I figured they just weren’t going to do it, so I was intrigued when I saw that a package from them was coming in the mail as I hadn’t ordered anything. This showed up last week.

I posted her portrait to Instagram and Chewy responded!
