Catching Up With Fall Fun

Here’s what we’ve been up to this month.

Sponge Bob Witch Pants & Patrick Vampire Go Trick or Treating

October 9th we went to the annual Scarecrow Festival in St. Charles, Illinois. It was a beautiful day – not too hot, and not too cold. We enjoyed walking around the area, but afterward we could not decide where to eat so we ended up getting discounted burgers at the Tastee Freeze nearby. I really wish there were more restaurants on the Fox River because it was a perfect day to enjoy lunch outside.

Happy Halloween sign

October 16th we took the kids to Sonny Acres Farm for our annual visit. K and I both got walking tacos like we always do. E is more particular, so we prepared PB&J sandwiches for him to bring along. After we bored of walking around, we went to Danada Equestrian Center for a hayride. Later that afternoon we attended a wake for a former coworkers of Joe’s who passed away. Poor guy had only been retired a year and a half. So sad. Afterward we took the kids to IHOP for dinner where I have some very yummy Nutella crepes. After dinner we took the Gallery of Ghoulish Homes Tour in St. Charles. This year K wasn’t keen on the live actors so we didn’t get out of the car like we usually do.

Carousel

October 21st we visited Brookfield Zoo for the first time in five years since it was a free day and we took some time off from work. I hadn’t realized that much time had passed! They’ve added a very large carousel to the zoo, as well as redid the bear exhibit, moving the grizzlies and polar bears to the area that used to be known as Regenstein Wolf Woods. Now the area is called Great Bear Wilderness. They did a really nice job and that area of the zoo looks updated like many of the other zoos we’ve visited recently. The big cats were off exhibit because they are working on their habitat now. I wish they could have moved them to the now empty bear enclosures while they work but I guess they have their reasons.

Joe’s still working on the remodel of the kids’ bathroom. The tub is in and most of the walls too so it’s getting there.

Today we decided to make an unplanned trip to Cosley Zoo and learned they started charging admission in July ($3 per person). We decided to buy an annual membership for $55 because it includes free/discounted admission to other zoos across the country including the ones we’re planning on visiting next year in Ohama, Des Moines, and Seattle. Score!

Carved Pumpkins

Tonight we carved pumpkins which came out much better than I expected. I can’t believe this awesome holiday is almost over. My only regret is not getting a chance to go on a haunted hayride with friends. Maybe next year.

Cavities & Apples

Remember how we went to the dentist back in April? Well we finally went back last Tuesday to get our cavities filled. I opted for the white enamel filling which costs $175 because the insurance only covers mercury. No way I was taking a chance that it could affect my health. I’d rather pay. Joe went with the free option because he doesn’t give a shit. I was nervous about the experience having never had a cavity before, but I barely felt the Novocaine shot and the process, while uncomfortable, wasn’t painful at all. Joe has to go back next week to get his second cavity filled since they’d only do the one for some reason.

Saturday we went to the Long Grove Apple Festival. Long Grove is known for their festivals. In addition to the apple one, they also have a chocolate festival and a strawberry festival. It was rather chilly but we had a good time. The apple cider donuts from Apple Haus were awesome! So dense and tasty! The “donut on a stick”, which was dipped in thick chocolate, was well worth the inflated price of $2, let me tell you. The whole area is really cute. I wouldn’t mind going back on a non-festival weekend to explore and get photos of the changing leaves.

Extended Weekend

All of my extended weekend plans got cancelled due to events and weather. Originally we had planned to drive to Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday. The plan was to visit the Omaha Zoo on Friday, then drive to Des Moines, Iowa, and visit their zoo on Saturday. Then we were going to stop in Galena, IL on Saturday, spend the night, and come home on Sunday. But as I was about to book the hotel for Omaha I found that almost all the rooms were booked which was odd, and then I learned the second largest rodeo in the U.S. was in town this weekend. So we decided to postpone that trip. No sense in driving five hours to Des Moines either, so the new plan was to spend a night in Galena.

Then Joe found out he had to work Thursday, so we pushed Galena to Friday.

Then Friday showed rain, so we pushed it to Saturday.

Then Saturday showed rain so we cancelled it altogether.

And that is how we ended up not going anywhere new this weekend. We saw a couple of movies, and went downtown yesterday to the planetarium, but that’s about it.

Adler Planetarium

I haven’t been to the planetarium in over a decade so I didn’t recognize the inside at all because it has been completely renovated. And while it’s much more interesting than it used to be, it’s still pretty boring. The only reason we even decided to visit was because it was a “free” day. Of course we still had to pay $10 per person per show; there’s really no point visiting if you’re not going to see a show since the exhibits don’t keep your attention for very long. We saw Journey to the Stars which was an interesting look at how the stars and galaxies were formed. We also saw 3D Vision: Imaging the Universe which was just ok. The 3D effects weren’t very impressive, actually. Between parking and the cost of the shows, our “free” day at the planetarium actually cost $55. I guess you can look at it as the cost of a lifetime since I really can’t see ever going back to the planetarium unless we’re able to look through their giant telescope as it’s the only thing that would warrant a repeat visit.

Paradise Pup Triple D Banner

On the way home we stopped at a little dive in Des Plaines called Paradise Pup that had been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The place was packed so we waited in line longer than I ever have for a couple of burgers and onion rings, but they were pretty good.

Four days gone in a flash. Back to the grind.

Racine Zoo & Kenosha Wisconsin

Giraffe

Back in June when we visited Milwaukee, we accidentally stumbled upon Racine Zoo and a cute area of Kenosha right by Lake Michigan, so two weeks ago on a Saturday we made a return trip to check it all out.

First we hit the zoo which is quite small, but has some interesting exhibits, particularly for the giraffes, penguins and meerkats. The parking was free, the admission was reasonable ($6.50), and the place was deserted. A winning combination, really. What’s very interesting about the zoo is that it’s right on the lake in a regular neighborhood. There was a house literally next door to the giraffes. What a view!

After the zoo we headed South to Kenosha where we stopped at a drive-in for lunch. The food was ok. Very cheap, and the drive-in experience was something different. The onion rings were the best I’ve had so I guess there’s something to be said for that.

After lunch we stopped at the Kenosha Public Museum. It’s not very large but it’s free and has a Woolly Mammoth exhibit worth checking out. Next door is a Civil War museum but we didn’t go in. Out back was a farmers market, so we walked around that and then walked down to the lakeshore and took pictures of the lake and pier light.

Kenosha Streetcar

Bordering the area is the Kenosha Streetcar, or what I like to call a cute trolley, which is fifty cents to ride so we rode it the whole loop, then went to a nearby bar for a drink before heading back home.

In all it was a very nice day. I wish I was filthy rich so all days were as enjoyable!

Dolphins, toads, and tigers, oh my!

While I wait for iPhone OS4 to download so I can get the fancy multi-tasking and folders, among other things, on my 3GS, I figure I might as well post an update. If I had been paying attention earlier, I’d already have the new OS installed, but I thought it wasn’t coming out until the 24th so shame on me. Anyway…

Pacific White-Sided Dolphin

On June 6th we finally visited the Shedd Aquarium to check out the “new and improved” Oceanarium. Let me just state for the record that I’m glad we took advantage of Bank of American’s “Museums on Us” program to get in free because I was severely disappointed. I didn’t notice much of a change other than the addition of a few kid play areas in the underwater viewing section and a new snack bar (as if the relatively small Shedd really needed another one). There’s a big section behind the seating area for the Fantasea show that is nearly empty; there’s only one tank with a few sea dragons in it (which are very cool). I just don’t know why they can’t add some cool exhibits in there like they used to have. I think next time we go to that part of the city we’ll visit the Planetarium or Museum of Natural History instead.

Toad

Last weekend when Joe and E were at the pool they found a toad stuck in the skimmer and brought it home since they know how much I love toads. I wasn’t planning on keeping it, but after feeding it some mealworms I figured I might as well, so now she has her own little habitat where Oreo’s cage used to be. She’s a pretty cool pet; I wouldn’t mind getting some fire-bellied toads at some point too, but I’m not sure they can be kept together so we’ll see.

Tiger

This past weekend started on Friday with a drive to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. First we stopped in Kenosha for breakfast, then made our way to Milwaukee Zoo where I got some of the best tiger photos I’ve ever taken! Leaving the zoo it suddenly dawned on me that my favorite hoodie was missing. I called the place where we had breakfast, and sure enough I had left it there, 45 minutes away. So instead of heading to Miller Brewery for a tour we had to drive back to Kenosha to get my hoodie before the restaurant staff closed up for the day. We hit some traffic, but luckily they were still there cleaning up when we arrived and I was reunited with my beloved hoodie. I just want to make it clear that I’m losing my mind lately (probably due to work stress) because I never ever ever leave stuff in public places. I mean EVER.

All was not lost with our unintended detour, however, because we stumbled upon a really cute lakeside area of Kenosha complete with a lighthouse and free museum which we plan to explore during a return trip soon. In addition, instead of heading back to the expressway, we followed a route along the Lake Michigan up to Milwaukee, passing through Racine Wisconsin which I found out also has a cute little zoo. Joe’s not keen on the idea of returning to the area (it did seem pretty run-down), but I’ll change his mind. The zoo is right on the lake which is really cool and I definitely want to check it out.

Aziz Ansari

We arrived in Milwaukee after stopping at McDonald’s for ice cream (gotta love those 49¢ cones) around 4 pm and decided to scope out where the Pabst Theater was located and grab our will-call tickets for Aziz Ansari’s show at 7 pm. The original plan was to grab the tickets and then find a place to eat but that crazy storm that was hitting Chicago earlier decided to make an appearance and the wind started whipping around something fierce, so we took shelter in the underground parking garage beneath the theater and waited out the storm inside the lobby area that separates the Pabst from a place called The Rev as well as The InterContinental Hotel. Since the rain wasn’t really letting up we ended up running to the closest restaurant across the street, a little chinese place. The food was pretty good and the service was phenomenal so it worked out in the end.

The Pabst Theater is beautiful inside, by the way. I hear it’s cooler than The Vic in Chicago, although I wouldn’t know from personal experience since I’ve never been there. We weren’t supposed to take pictures, but they didn’t check for cameras, so I had mine on me and grabbed a quick snap of the ceiling once we found our seats. We were pretty close to the stage which was cool, and I got a few pics of Aziz as well. He was really funny. I’ve liked him ever since his brief stint on the “new” Scrubs. His mannerisms are what crack me up the most.

After the show we decided to head back home. We had contemplated staying overnight but it seemed like a waste since we planned on going to Brickworld (Lego convention) the next morning anyway. The drive home wasn’t horrible, but there were some scary parts where the rain was coming down really hard; people were pulling off the highway onto the shoulder at some points. I nearly had an anxiety attack and was so happy to get home. Interestingly enough our cable, phone and internet were all working that night but were completely out the next day until mid afternoon.

Saturday was interesting because I decided I didn’t feel like going to Brickworld after all (we’ll go next year) so we decided to have a lazy day instead. First we went out for tacos at a local Mexican dive where we got to listen to three twenty-somethings, mostly one guy, just talk and talk and talk at a table near us. The stuff that was coming out of this drunk guy’s mouth was just hilarious. He was complimenting his friend, Katie (he only said her name a million times so how could I forget), regarding how smart she is/was. Her response? “I was the first person hired on the spot at Dairy Queen”. LOL! Way to aim high Katie. Heehee. Seriously, that was the best thing I heard all week.

After lunch we went to the pool for a couple of hours which was at least an hour too long and now I am sun burned like I haven’t been sun burned since I was a kid! I totally blame Joe for that even though I’m an adult and should know better. My legs are so red and it hurts like a bitch but at least my face is ok!

After the pool we went to the store and decided to buy tequila and mix so we could make margaritas. And what goes best with margaritas? Tacos, of course, so we went back to the same Mexican dive and ordered steak tacos to go. We also grabbed a movie at Blockbuster – Shutter Island that wasn’t really all that great until the last fifteen minutes.

Yesterday we picked up Joe’s son for Father’s Day and took him to my parents house to visit. Don’t even get me started on how his daughter wasn’t available because his ex let her sign up for an event without first checking with him that it would be ok because it’s fricking disrespectful, not to mention a violation of their divorce agreement. And what pisses me off the most is he would have let her go anyway, but no one could be bothered to even ask him; they just assumed they could do whatever they want and not even consider his feelings. It’s not nice at all.

What was nice was seeing my family again since it’s been nearly a year, perhaps even longer, since we’ve gone over there because my mom has been too sick for company. We ate, played games, and just visited for awhile before dropping E off at home (the kids have a house now back in the town they grew up in) and coming home ourselves to crash after our very busy, but fun, weekend.
