Happy Easter

Happy Easter, everyone! I’ve been busy this morning making spaghetti & meatballs for Brother # 1 as we’re celebrating Easter and his birthday at my parents’ later today. I’ve also been catching up on blog entries in case you haven’t noticed. Joe shampooed the carpet in the pet room and I washed all the bedding and towels the rats play in so that tomorrow they will be all ready for introductions. I am so excited for Marshmallow to gain some playmates and for our dining room to go back to an uncluttered state!

Easter Presents

The Easter hubby bunny came and got me chocolates and the My Little Pony I kept eyeing at the store. I know, how old am I? Whatever. I was really surprised because I didn’t think Joe got me anything this year. Man, I am such a lucky girl!

Now I’m debating whether we should color the eggs I boiled on Friday since E wasn’t interested in coloring them this year (who can blame him now that he’s 16 years old).

My Valentine

Valentine's Day Gifts

Joe managed to surprise me this year by putting together a fun scavenger hunt to find my gifts. He also tricked me a bit since one of the earlier gifts I found was not the necklace I had been dropping hints about weeks before. Luckily, my last gift (the Karma necklace) was! I had a big goofy grin on my face reading his clues (which were personalized, in prose form, and referenced The Cure more than once). My husband is the best. I truly won the lottery of love when I met him.

Happy New Year

I’m a bit late wishing everyone a Happy New Year because I’ve been dealing with a little drama at my volunteer job. You see, I decided to resign effective December 31st so I could focus on some new goals for the new year. When my replacement was chosen in mid December I trained her and then she promptly fell off the face of the earth, not responding to any requests (aka keeping the adoptable pet profiles updated on Petfinder and AdoptAPet). A week later she sent an email explaining she had been out of town with no internet access but would begin making updates in two days time (why she agreed to take over the responsibilities knowing she was going out of town that same day is beyond me, not to mention why, knowing she had a backlog of updates, she decides she’s not doing anything for an additional two days when I had told her most requests should be competed in 24 hours). Based on an email I was copied on last night, she still hasn’t done diddly squat since agreeing to take over on DECEMBER 19th! I really don’t understand people like her at all. Whether you’re getting paid or not, if you agree to do something, you should do it. Some people really lack integrity. But it’s not my problem, so whatever. I really need to focus on myself in 2014 and not let people like her bother me.

I’m not going to do an official 2013 year in review here with links and whatnot because I’m just not feeling it. The year brought many changes: leaving my job of a decade in January, learning to survive on one salary, getting down to my goal weight, finding part-time work in August, adopting our two rats, and saying goodbye to one of them right before Christmas. It wasn’t the best year due to having no money to go on vacation and still not finding fulfilling work, but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up. It’s a new year full of possibilities. Sure, those could be that we have even less money than last year since Joe found out back in November that his entire department is being eliminated this July, but a lot can happen between now and then. This will be the third time he’s gone through a restructuring so he may get lucky again. However, if he does get let go without finding another job within the company, he will get a pretty nice severance package that will keep our income (and benefits) the same until early 2015. We won’t be able to contribute to his 401k, however, which will suck, but I’m crossing my fingers that it won’t be long before we’re contributing again. Because you know how I stress about saving enough for retirement. I do not want to work until I’m in my 70’s or live on a low fixed income. Just thinking about it makes me super anxious.

New Year’s Eve always depresses me so this year we decided to treat it like a regular day. We made a couple of nice steaks for dinner, watched a movie (the follow-up to Firefly, Serenity), and went to bed before 11 pm. It was great! Just skipping the NYE specials on TV stopped the hopelessness I tend to suffer from at the end of every year. Those damn shows make me feel like I should be out partying even though that’s not me at all and I wouldn’t even enjoy myself. Then I start feeling like I’m boring and blah blah blah and by the time I go to bed I want to kill myself. Not really, but kinda. So it was nice skipping that whole roller coaster ride of emotions.

The following morning we hit the mall to do some shopping since it’s always dead and everything is heavily discounted, but wouldn’t you know it, I came home empty-handed (Joe got socks). But I’m ok with that. What l learned this past year is that I’m not that into buying stuff anymore. At least not to the extent I used to be. For one, I’m much pickier, so I don’t see a lot of stuff I actually want. For another thing, even with the stuff I see and technically like, the first thought I have is, “do I really need it?” and the answer is usually no, so I don’t buy it.

That being said, after watching the Happy Endings marathon on VH1 (why oh why was this awesome show canceled? Oh that’s right, because people would rather watch fake reality TV showcasing people behaving like morons), I’m determined to find a delicate sterling silver necklace like the character, Penny, sports in the show (exhibit A / exhibit B). The problem I’m having is that the standard size chain sold is 16″ and thanks to my little neck it doesn’t sit high enough on my collarbone like I want. I need a 14″ chain but they are really hard to come by. My only other option is find a necklace I like and spend $15-$20 to have it altered at a jeweler. So far I’ve found one necklace I like for $16 at JCPenney of all places, but it seems silly to spend the same price on a cheap piece of jewelry to have it fitted to my desired length. It would make more sense to buy a higher quality necklace from a jeweler, which they’d adjust for free, but I haven’t seen any I like. Such problems I have, right? That’s ok, though – I like having a mission.

Christmas Vacation

This is how I spent our Christmas vacation…

Friday – Spent the entire morning into the afternoon in bed watching TV and surfing online. Did absolutely nothing productive and didn’t feel too guilty about it (maybe just a little).

Saturday – Made a big breakfast, watched TV, went to Dominick’s to see what was left on the shelves (since they are closing all their stores at the end of the year) and purchased 3 cartons of lactose free milk, among other things, for under $1.50 each, got a delicious Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza (as well as a $100 gift card to fund 2014’s pizza cravings since a free $25 gift certificate came with it), rented Red 2 from Redbox (ok, but not as good as the first one), and watched the first three episodes of Firefly (we borrowed the complete series from the library).

Sunday – Watched more episodes of Firefly and in the evening, with hot chocolate in hand, toured the neighborhood looking at Christmas decorations, like the house pictured below.

Decorated House

Monday – Attended my company’s Christmas luncheon at a local steakhouse and had a nice time (four hours just flew by). Said goodbye to Winston. Watched more Firefly.

Tuesday (Christmas Eve) – Baked an awesome chocolate pecan pie and made Oreo cookie balls, both of which were taken to my parents’ house to celebrate Christmas Eve. E was with us and we did our annual Crazy BINGO even though it was more like Crazy UNO. Joe ended up winning the “big” prize of $20. Also, one of my gag gifts, a gingerbread picture frame ornament containing a photo of poop was a big hit with Brother # 1. He ended up buying it off E for $3. We also surprised my parents with a new large widescreen monitor for their computer so they can read their emails better. We stayed until just after 11 pm and finally got home and to bed after 1 am.

Today (Christmas) – Decided to go see a movie instead of sitting around the house and feeling let down about the holiday since we had exchanged gifts on Tuesday. We chose Anchorman 2. We chose poorly. It was one of the worst movies we’ve seen in a very long time. There was hardly any funny scenes and it was just a major disappointment. I cannot believe it has a 75% positive rating online. It should have never been made. Came home, ate Chinese food for lunch, which we ordered and picked up yesterday since, despite everyone’s belief that Chinese restaurants are open on Christmas, none of the ones in the area I called yesterday were planning on being open. Finished watching Firefly. A few friends are in love with this series, and while I did enjoy it, I didn’t think it was all that. It was rather weird how other than the whole spaceship stuff it was mostly like a western. That being said, I do plan on getting my hands on the follow-up movie, Serenity, soon.

Presents – This year we gave each other a budget of $100 for gifts. I got Joe some running gloves and a hat, socks (albeit the wrong kind because I’m a moron), some coffee syrup, weights, a guitar tab book, and Rocksmith 2014 for the PS3. He gave me some Cuddl Duds (long underwear), a collapsible multi-disc light reflector, a wireless bluetooth speaker (the sound is quite impressive), and some nail polish I’ve been wanting. We also bought each other candy stocking stuffers like we do every year.

I feel conflicted about going back to work tomorrow. On one hand I’m getting rather bored being at home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I enjoy working. At least it’s only two days this week. I normally have Fridays off but figured I’d go in so I’ll get paid for four days but only have to work two.

Thanksgiving Part Deux

Saturday we had our Thanksgiving with E, my SIL, and Brother # 2. I cooked an actual turkey this year instead of a turkey breast like past years. It came out… a bit dry. But it was my first time and it wasn’t so dry that it wasn’t edible (good enough that I made two turkey sandwiches for lunch yesterday, oh yea)!

Friday I made the green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, and mac and cheese so that I wouldn’t have to figure out how to get those done while the oven was busy cooking the turkey. Oh, and we used a nice roasting pan we got at IKEA last weekend for only $12.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Earlier on Saturday I was using my food processor to make hash browns (I did actually use it to chop pecans for the sweet potato casserole but right now it’s mainly used to shred potatoes) and I cut the tip of my middle finger on the shredding blade while extracting it from the protective cardboard I’ve been keeping it in to prevent getting cut. Irony, I love thee.

After dinner on Saturday we decided to nix our original plans of going out to see Christmas lights since it’s been so cold lately and played Phase 10 instead. At some point the cards kept rubbing against my cut and unbeknownst to me it started to bleed. E pointed out there was something red on some of his cards, so I put a band-aid on. As the game went on and on we got sillier and sillier and I ended up drawing a face on my band-aid and flipping people the bird, or, depending on your interpretation, the cat or fox since that’s what it ended up looking like after I kept adding onto the face.

Finger Band-aid

Speaking of foxes, I think Joe and I were probably the last people on Earth to see the What Does The Fox Say video that’s been making its rounds online. My family introduced it to us on the real Thanksgiving. As we watched we were getting frustrated because we know we hadn’t seen it before but the melody sounded so infuriatingly familiar. It wasn’t until two days later that it came to Joe why – we had seen a parody of the video on SNL a few weeks ago not knowing it was mocking a real video. I’m not sure about you, but I prefer the SNL version, What Does My Girl Say.
