Blockbuster, how you toy with me

Last week our local Blockbuster messed with my head for a moment when I saw Dead Like Me, Season 1, Disc 4 on the shelf (read this entry for the background story on this), but it was Disc 3 in the wrong spot. Just as I suspected, they didn’t remove the Disc 4 box. I mean, why would anyone want to run a successful business after all?

I started calling around to other Blockbusters in the area to hunt down this disc. Everyone was very friendly and apologetic when they said they didn’t carry the series, and one guy informed me that you can actually check stock of a particular store online at the Blockbuster site. Well, theoretically since the service has been “temporarily unavailable” for over a week now.

After my fourth call, I finally located a store that carried the series, but the disc I was looking for was out. I called back yesterday morning and it was back in. I asked if they’d hold it, which they do, but only for two hours. I told the guy I’d call back later since I wouldn’t be able to make it over there until after 5 pm but he said he’d hold it for me anyway and took my name. That was nice.

If only Little Miss Unfriendly at our usual store could train with that guy. I don’t know what crawled up her butt, but she never smiles and the only words out of her mouth during the entire transaction is “here you go” when she hands you the movie. I don’t know if she’s just a biotch, or she doesn’t like us in particular, but she makes me uncomfortable.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that

Went back to work today after five wonderful days away. Blech! It’s like I go into an instant depression once it’s time to start working again. My job isn’t horrible (well, horribly boring most days, but easy at least), I just prefer being home. The time we had off just flew by.

In that time I missed more drama at The Cure’s official site with Robert posting snarky messages in the comments. The funniest thing about all of this is that it turns out that the supposed “rumors” posted at COF were in fact true: Perry Bamonte and Roger O’Donnell have left the band… or were they let go? I don’t even care enough to check. As I’ve learned over the years, The Cure has always thrived regardless of who was in the band because the central force, Robert Smith, is what drives the band’s direction.

Fever Pitch

Star Wars Cup On Saturday we went to the movies for the first time in awhile. To give you an idea of how many months it has been, the last movie we saw in a theatre was The Incredibles.

About a month or two ago the local theatre mailed us some discount coupons to advertise that they had finished remodeling. There were two for a complimentary popcorn, one for a large Pepsi for the price of a junior, and a fourth coupon for discount admission ($5.50 each instead of the $6.75 (ridiculous) they now charge at matinees (and this isn’t even the “expensive” Sony theatre!!)). I put the tickets aside on the off chance we got in the mood to see a movie. Good thing I did, because I doubt we would have gone otherwise.

The Human Stain vs Jersey Girl

We rented The Human Stain the other day because I like Anthony Hopkins. I have to say I was very disappointed in the movie. It just seemed so blah that I didn’t even care for the “climax” at the end.

In contrast, Jersey Girl premiered on cable and it was fantastic. We didn’t see it in the theatre because it didn’t look very funny, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. How dare I doubt Kevin Smith; he is yet to make a film I have not enjoyed.

Sucky movies & video games

I don’t know why so many people liked Napolean Dynamite. I thought it was stupid and the plot was weak. The only character that was even remotely interesting was Deb. She’s the girl who starred in that movie with the seal, called Andre. I knew she looked familiar.

Speaking of blah movies, we’re going to watch Kill Bill Vol 2 in a few minutes on cable. I’m not necessarily looking forward to it, because Vol 1 was so over-the-top violent that it made me queasy. But I have to know how the story ends, so I will endure it for the next two and a half hours. Damn you Quentin Tarantino, damn you!

P.S. Don’t rent Shark Tale for the PS2. I wanted to try it out, mostly to see if it would be fun for the kids. Joe just got the Game Pass at Blockbuster, so it doesn’t really cost anything extra, so why not? Well that game blows! It may not have wasted money, but it did waste my time. Even the kids would hate it. I hate when they take a good movie and try to turn it into a game without much thought into how enjoyable it will be.
