Weekly Recap: 04/11-04/14

Bluebird

Monday 04/11 – Bought new runner for foyer table at Bed, Bath & Beyond, had breakfast at IKEA (and bought a birthday gift for Brother # 1), saw a bluebird at Morton Arboretum, Marshmallow passed away.

Tuesday 04/12 – Organized batteries into one big container we purchased from IKEA, activated our new Target cards with the chip technology

Wednesday 04/13 – Watched The Saint (starring Val Kilmer) since Joe had never seen it. Forgot how bad it was, even though the soundtrack is fantastic (listening to it is what prompted us to watch the movie).

Thursday 04/14 – Cleaned the rat cages, obtained free Cubs tickets from work.

RIP Marshmallow

About a month ago I knew Marshmallow’s time was quickly approaching (I estimate he was born sometime between mid December to late January 2014; he was a Petco feeder rat). He has always been my thinnest rat, not motivated by food like the others. I made sure to spend more quality time with him and in the past two weeks I even put him on the bed with Milo and Gizmo to play and he behaved himself.

Mid last week I noticed I wasn’t having to fill his food dish as often as before and he would only eat treats. Then he started limping a little. Well, by Friday he was not doing well. He was sleeping all the time and would barely move. He wouldn’t take food at all, and I knew he was dying. Saturday I had him on my lap for hours while we watched tv because his little body was so cold to the touch. I wrapped him up and we both sat under my heated blanket. I also crushed up some food and added water to it and fed him with a spoon. He’d only eat a little, and take a little water from the spoon as well.

By Sunday he wouldn’t even do that and wasn’t moving at all. Why is it my rats always go downhill on the one day the vet isn’t open? Ugh. I thought for sure he’d be dead each morning I checked on him but he kept trucking on which worried me because he wasn’t eating, drinking, or even really moving. He also would poop/pee all over himself and just lay in it. I would clean him up and he’d be limp, yet still breathing. It was so sad.

This morning he was lying on his side with his eyes open as if he had died but was still breathing and blinking his eyes if I pet his head. I called the vet to make an appointment to put him out of his misery. I wrestled with whether it was more humane to let him pass naturally, but I couldn’t stand knowing he was starving himself to death. He wasn’t responding to my touch and almost seemed to not be there mentally anymore. I felt so bad seeing him that way and I only hope I did the right thing.

The exotic vet wasn’t on staff until Wednesday but the vet who saw us has euthanized rats before and explained the procedure. Basically they gas the rat to cause it to fall asleep and then inject a drug into the heart to cause it to stop. We couldn’t be there for that part (nor would I want to be) but she brought him back into the room afterwards for us to say our final goodbyes. I opted not to get ashes back because what the heck would I do with them? They asked if I wanted a clay paw print created but I said no because I’m trying not to add more stuff to the house. Does that sound callous? It’s just that 1) we don’t have any from our previous rats and 2) I would feel like I should get them for all of them moving forward, and considering their short life spans, I’d end up with a huge pile of them. What would I do with them? Stick them in a box? I dunno. I hope I don’t end up regretting that decision. Besides, I have my photos and videos to remember him by.

When I had to euthanize Templeton, the only other pet I ever had to make that decision with, I opted not to see his body afterwards, but I wanted to see Marshmallow so I could get used to this process. Unfortunately rats only live about two years so that means there’s a very real possibility I will be going through this four more times this year as all my rats were born between Jan 2014 and June 2014.

Roller Skating Party

The nice thing about Joe and I both having Mondays off is that we can go out on Sundays without stressing about the weekend almost being over.

Sunday we went to a private roller skating party in Lombard organized by one of our Meetup groups. We didn’t recognize anyone there except for one girl we met during our board game meetup, but there wasn’t much time for socializing anyway. What was so fantastic was that there were under 80 people in attendance which made skating so much easier because there were less people to navigate around.

It’s funny how quickly you can get back into the groove even if you haven’t skated for years (which I haven’t; it’s been 5 since we visited a rink). I was shaky at first but by the end of the evening I was able to do the cross-over with my skates when turning without tripping myself. Joe had a little more difficulty turning since he opted to bring his roller blades. Neither one of us fell, however, which is more than I can say for a lot of the attendees. But I have to hand it to the people who clearly were struggling because at least they came out and tried.

A 2-hour private rental (on Sundays at least) is only $400; they charged $10 per person and donated the amount above the rental fee to a charity. I ended up having to rent skates for $4 since when I pulled out my roller blades earlier that afternoon to clean and try them on I discovered the plastic clasps were broken. They are over 20 years old at this point, but that stinks because I’d like to get back into blading when it gets warmer since it’s such good exercise and but doesn’t feel like it.

Speaking of exercise, there was a poster at the rink stating that an hour of roller skating burns 600 calories which is impressive, if it were true. But my weight loss app and a few other calculators online peg it closer to 350-400. Not that I’m complaining. I’d say we skated for about an hour and fifteen minutes total – we got there just after 4 when it started, took a few short breaks here and there, and left five minutes before 6 pm.

There was a disco theme to the gathering so some people were dressed up and they played mostly disco music, although I did get to hear Material Girl which was awesome (and P.Y.T. during the ladies only skate). I could not stop myself from singing along with Material Girl as I skated because I was getting some kind of endorphin high. I do NOT normally sing in public but I didn’t care; there’s something about skating that just feels so good as you glide along.

That being said, I did have to take small breaks since I was getting pain in my left leg, probably because I was exercising muscles I don’t use very often. I was smart, though, and wore a thicker pair of socks so I wouldn’t get any blisters, plus I used my shoe inserts in the skates to help with my arches. As a result I’m a lot less sore today than I might otherwise have been.

There was talk about possibly having the roller skating parties monthly which would be awesome. I don’t mind spending $25 a month for a good time and to burn a bunch of calories.

After the event we had a small dinner, popped some popcorn, and watched Daddy’s Home which was free thanks to a Redbox code. That movie did not look very promising based on the previews so we were both delightfully surprised by how entertaining it was. I think the ratings online don’t do it justice.

Celebrating E’s Birthday

I can’t believe E will be 18 next week! I met the kid when he was two years old. Yikes, that makes me feel old! Since he’s getting older he hasn’t been coming over every other weekend like in the past, which we totally get, so it was nice to see him this weekend. It’s so weird that he drives himself over too. Nice, though! As is our tradition, the birthday boy got to choose his meals this weekend, so I ended up making cheeseburger macaroni (homemade, not Hamburger Helper – blech) for dinner Friday night and my homemade meatloaf for dinner Saturday night. I also baked brownies since E prefers them over cake.

Friday we watched Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. We had $50 of credit in our Fandango Now account (formerly known as M-GO) so I purchased it. With a $3 offer, it cost $17 which is expensive if you ask me. But that credit had been sitting there untouched since we purchased our TV last summer so why not? I was surprised it wasn’t available in 4K, though. Bummer. Also, the free bonus content that came with it is only accessible on the website so you can’t stream it on the TV through the app. That’s just dumb if you ask me. I don’t care to sit in front of my computer to watch anything longer than a short YouTube video.

Before E went to bed we gave him his birthday gifts which we put in a Star Wars reusable bag we had gotten at the dollar store – a Starburst blueberry candle (since he was looking for that scent since our trip with him to IKEA recently), a BB-8 ceramic bank (since he loves BB-8 and really liked the Pokemon ceramic bank we got him for Christmas), and $40 since we ran out of ideas and he loves money anyway.

Saturday we decided to go to the movies and see Zootopia. I like the theater in the mall by us because matinee tickets are only $4.25. The seats in the theater themselves leave something to be desired, but it’s cheaper than going out to the other theater we used to frequent since it’s further away and the tickets are $5.50. We all really enjoyed the movie, and I swear I wanted to see every single movie in the preceding trailers. I think I like kid films a little too much.

After the movie we headed over to Bath & Body Works so I could grab a free travel size lotion with a coupon I had. In the past I would have felt embarrassed to walk in and only check out with my free item but I really don’t care. It smells really good too!

Lotion

E bought some stuff at Hot Topic and FYE with his $40 so that didn’t last long. ;)

After shopping we had lunch at Red Robin since I knew it wouldn’t cost us anything out of pocket. They emailed me that morning with a free birthday burger coupon for E, and there was a 16% discount code on my rewards card. On top of that I logged into Discover and purchased a $50 e-certificate. E didn’t end up wanting a burger (he got a chicken sandwich), though, so technically we used the coupon on my burger. I got the regular cheeseburger instead of my usual (the Banzai burger) which I shouldn’t have done because it’s not nearly as good. Joe ended up having a salad which really wasn’t worth the price ($5 for a very small plate of lettuce and a few veggies). That being said, only $18.51 was taken off the card (and that includes tip) for three people. Gotta love that!

Ting – Our New Wireless Service

Thursday we initiated the process of switching our wireless carrier from AT&T to Ting. I had heard about Ting awhile back but was on the fence about switching. AT&T increasing the rate on our plan and Joe losing his job pushed us to reconsider the switch.

We ordered the SIM cards from Ting a couple of weeks ago. Since they are a pay for what you use type service they don’t give you the SIMs for free. Each one was $9 plus shipping so our total was $23. I read that most carriers do not prorate your bill so I felt Thursday would be the perfect time to start the process since it was near the end of the billing cycle and it gave us time to work out any lack of service issues.

I was also concerned AT&T wouldn’t unlock my phone in a timely manner since they won’t do it until after you’ve settled your final bill including an ETF (early termination fee). We’ve been with AT&T for seven years, switching from T-Mobile which we liked simply because at the time they were the only carrier that supported the iPhone. We stayed with AT&T because I was grandfathered into their unlimited data plan, we had a discount through Joe’s employer, and because our contracts were never in sync so there was always an ETF to consider unless we waited until both phones were off contract. However, after calculating how much we’d save with Ting, not to mention the referral fee from a friend plus Ting paying a portion of your ETF back in the form of an account credit, we decided to bite the bullet.

I requested Joe’s unlock at the beginning of the week since his phone was already out of contract and it was granted in less than an hour. Thursday evening I chatted with Ting and learned that I should request Ting to port over our numbers which would automatically cancel our AT&T account. The porting process took less than a half hour (although they do warn it could take up to 24) and we decided to deal with the AT&T portion and actually putting the new SIM cards in our phones on Friday morning.

That whole process was easy for Joe’s phone, and when I logged into our Ting account I got really confused because it was showing his test text message under my phone number. Long story short – I’m a doofus. The Ting account does not update immediately and the text message I was looking at (not carefully enough, obviously) was a text that had been sent to my phone the night before. I just never got it since I hadn’t yet asked AT&T to unlock my phone or put the new SIM card in. Derp!

On top of that, I got really pissed at AT&T because when I tried logging into our account to check the final bill it said we no longer had an account. Turns out they had sent an email to Joe (as he’s the primary account holder) letting him know our logins were changed from our phone numbers to a new login they had created. Why they do this I’m not sure, but whatever.

Once I got in the account showed a zero balance even though I was expecting an ETF, so I figured why not request the unlock? Worst they could do was deny it. Unlike Joe’s unlock request, mine wasn’t being granted as quickly, or so I thought. I called AT&T to find out what my final bill was, thinking the ETF was holding things up, and the rep told me my account was paid in full and the contract satisfied. Hmmm… that’s odd because last I had checked, my contract wasn’t up until September, but who was I to argue if they were going to let me out of my contract early and not charge the ETF? I went online to request the unlock again since the first time I put my name in and Joe is the account holder. I figured that might be holding things up, but after looking closer at the emails AT&T sent me, despite their VERY misleading verbiage, my initial request had already been granted shortly after submitting it. Derp again!

Needless to say, everything was smooth sailing from there. The only challenge is for me to not use my phone mindlessly when we’re not on a wireless network, although even if I did we wouldn’t be paying HALF what AT&T was charging us, so it’s really just a challenge to see how low we can keep our monthly bill. I love how you can log into your account and the system tells you what your bill is going to be based on your usage up to that point. I’m obsessed with it!

Ting

I also love that you can set usage alerts so you’ll know when you’re getting close to jumping into a different bucket for your minutes, messages, or data. On top of that, as seen in the screenshot, you can rename your phones instead of just seeing the phone number itself. Really cool service!

I’m pretty stoked that instead of being charged $135 per month our bill will be no more than $70 (based on our previous usage on AT&T). If you’re interesting in switching to Ting too, click my referral link, set up an account so you can purchase your SIM card(s), and you’ll get a $25 credit off your first bill! (And if you happen to forgot or not see the credit come up, just give Ting the URL since it’s unique to my account and they can retroactively apply it since that’s what I did with the referral link we were given).

Added on 4/11/16 – Well son of a bitch, AT&T reps don’t know what they are talking about (shocking, NOT). I just received a bill today for my ETF. On top of that they charge taxes on it for the remaining months so my final bill, which is just fees and no actual usage, is $173.75. Ting will give me back $36.25 of that, plus I received the $25 referral credit, so I’m out $112 for terminating my contract early. However, in two months we will have made up that difference and then it will be all savings from there, so it was still a good decision.

Added on 5/16/16 – Well AT&T once again baffles me. They sent me a second bill showing the ETF and all associated fees credited off the account. I have no idea why they did that, but I’m not going to argue. Woot! Also, our first bill with Ting was $34 but cost us nothing due to the credits we had so that’s awesome. I just realized we don’t have MMS with Ting, though, so I have to use my Google Voice # if I want to send pictures to people. Considering the fact that I’m not a big texter, and the people I do message I contact through Facebook Messenger and Trillian, it doesn’t really affect me much so whatever. I have noticed the cellular signal isn’t nearly as strong at AT&T was, however, which is a bummer, but for now it’s good enough and definitely saving us money which was the whole point of the switch to begin with.
