I don’t know what her deal is, but Peanut is acting very antisocial lately. She was actually much sweeter and willing to come out and play when we first got her. Now she runs when we approach the cage and spends most of the time (at least the time we are awake) hiding in her den. I’m really disappointed. It’s bad enough not being able to get a cat, something I could actually form a bond with and cuddle, and I know a hamster is not at all like a cat, but I don’t understand why Peanut seems to like me less now that she has gotten to know me. Story of my life, I guess. Except for Joe, that is. :(

Most small furry land mammals are like this. Our gerbils became antisocial after a while. There’s not much that can be done because they don’t exactly respond to cuddling or human emotion in the same way that dogs and cats do. Wish I could help you more. Sorry.
Sorry to hear about this… perhaps just do what I do to Katie – force her! She may not enjoy a good cuddle like I do, but as long as she can’t run away it’s fun for me ;)
This is one of the reasons I don’t want our kids to have hamsters/gerbills/fish/etc. They’re not cuddly, social creatures, so as long as we have a dog in the house I see no need for them to have the other animals. They’re not as fun and I know I’d be the one to clean their cage and take care of them. So I’m putting my foot down early and saying yes to dogs and no to anything else.
